The possible mechanisms of the human microbiome in allergic diseases.

In the present paper, we discuss the importance of the microbiome in allergic disease. In this review paper, the data from the Medline (PubMed) and search engine of Kirikkale University were systematically searched for all relevant articles in June 15th, 2015 for the past 30 years. The keywords of "microbiome", "dysbiosis", "allergy", "allergic rhinitis", "allergic disease", "mechanisms" and "treatment" were used alone or together.

Cinnamaldehyde is an effective anti-inflammatory agent for treatment of allergic rhinitis in a rat model.

Objectives: The effect of cinnamaldehyde on the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR) was investigated in rat model.

Methods: Twenty-eight female Wistar albino rats were randomly divided into four groups: Group 1 (control) (C), Group 2 (AR with no treatment) (AR+NoTr), Group 3 (AR+Azelastine HCl) (AR+Aze), and Group 4 (AR+cinnamaldehyde) (AR+Cin). At day 21, AR+Aze rats were given an Azelastine HCl drop, and AR+Cin rats were given cinnamaldehyde intranasally.

ATP-sensitive K(+) channels (Kir6.1/SUR1) regulate gap junctional coupling in cochlear-supporting cells.

Using the double whole-cell patch-clamp technique, we found that the absence of intracellular ATP led to gap junction uncoupling in cochlear-supporting Hensen cells. The uncoupling was observed as a progressive reduction of the gap junctional electrical conductance from a starting value of approximately 40 nS to less than 0.04 nS within 10-20 min.

A Simple Technique to Avoid Restenosis for Dacryocystorhinostomy.

The most common reason for failure in dacryocystorhinostomy has been proven to be the granuloma or membranous obstruction of scar tissue formation on lacrimal opening in the nasal cavity during the healing process. In this article, the authors suggest an easy maneuver to avoid the risk of scarring and collapsing of the knot in bony window by using a piece of an aspiration catheter. Using this easy maneuver, the authors can manage to reduce the risk of scarring and stenosis, and when the authors take out the tubes after 2 months, removing the silicone tube was easier with our technique.

Antileukotrienes in adenotonsillar hypertrophy: a review of the literature.

We assessed the use of antileukotrienes for treating adenotonsillar hypertrophy. We reviewed the current literature on the anatomy of adenotonsillar tissue, adenotonsillar hypertrophy/hyperplasia (and the associated pathophysiology and symptoms), and the effects of antileukotrienes used to treat adenotonsillar hypertrophy. Leukotrienes (LTs) are inflammatory mediators produced by a number of cell types, including mast cells, eosinophils, basophils, macrophages, and monocytes.

Neurocognitive factors in sensory restoration of early deafness: a connectome model.

Progress in biomedical technology (cochlear, vestibular, and retinal implants) has led to remarkable success in neurosensory restoration, particularly in the auditory system. However, outcomes vary considerably, even after accounting for comorbidity-for example, after cochlear implantation, some deaf children develop spoken language skills approaching those of their hearing peers, whereas other children fail to do so. Here, we review evidence that auditory deprivation has widespread effects on brain development, affecting the capacity to process information beyond the auditory system.

Giant Hypopharyngeal Fibrovascular Polyp: A Case Report and Review of the Relevant Literature.

Fibrovascular polyps occur most commonly in the cervical esophagus and are extremely rare in the hypopharynx. In this paper, we report a case of fibrovascular polyp of a 52-year-old female, who presented with progressive dysphagia and weight loss and regurgitating a mass from her mouth. By the endoscopic examination, a polyp covered by normal mucosa with a wide stalk was detected at the hypopharynx.

Effects of Use of a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure Device on Glaucoma.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of glaucoma in obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and to determine the efficacy of the equipment used in the treatment of this disease.

Material And Methods: In this cross-sectional study, 38 patients with OSAS used the continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device (Group 1) and 32 patients with OSAS refused CPAP device (Group 2). Thirty-six patients did not have OSAS (Group 3).

Different anesthetic agents-soaked sinus packings on pain management after functional endoscopic sinus surgery: which is the most effective?

In the present study, we investigated the efficacy of local anesthetics soaked non-absorbable sinus packs on pain management after functional endoscopic surgery (FESS). One hundred and fifty patients with the diagnosis of bilateral chronic sinusitis with or without nasal polyps who underwent FESS were included into the study. Their pre-operative Lund-Mackay computerized tomography (CT) Scores were similar.

Leukotrienes (LTs) are a family of inflammatory mediators including LTA4, LTB4, LTC4, LTD4, and LTE4. By competitive binding to the cysteinyl LT1 (CysLT1) receptor, LT receptor antagonist drugs, such as montelukast, zafirlukast, and pranlukast, block the effects of CysLTs, improving the symptoms of some chronic respiratory diseases, particularly bronchial asthma and allergic rhinitis. Is There a Relationship Between Snoring Sound Intensity and Frequency and OSAS Severity?

Objectives: We investigated the relationship between snoring sounds and severity of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS).

Methods: A total number of 103 snoring patients (60 males and 43 females) were evaluated by means of polysomnographic findings and snoring sound recordings. Snoring sound intensity was assessed using fast Fourier transform (FFT) method by measuring maximal frequency (Fmax) and average snoring sound intensity level (SSIL).

Comparison of two incisionless otoplasty techniques for prominent ears in children.

Objectives: In the present study, we applied two incisionless suture techniques for otoplasty: Haytoglu et al.'s modification of incisionless otoplasty technique and Fritsch's incisionless otoplasty technique for correction of prominent ears.

Auditory feedback modulates development of kitten vocalizations.

Effects of hearing loss on vocal behavior are species-specific. To study the impact of auditory feedback on feline vocal behavior, vocalizations of normal-hearing, hearing-impaired (white) and congenitally deaf (white) cats were analyzed at around weaning age. Eleven animals were placed in a soundproof booth for 30 min at different ages, from the first to the beginning of the fourth postnatal month, every 2 weeks of life.

Efficacy of sublingual immunotherapy for house dust mite allergic rhinitis.
