The host glycosylation mechanism, with sialic acids as a key component, is essential for synthesizing carbohydrate components in viral glycoproteins. We hypothesize a correlation between the presence of the Neu5Gc on the host tissue and the development of infectious complications, adverse vaccine reactions, and autoimmune diseases. In certain mammals, including humans, the loss of the Cytidine Monophospho-N-Acetylneuraminic Acid Hydroxylase gene (negative-CMAH) prevents the synthesis of Neu5Gc, which acts as a Mammalian-associated Carbohydrate Antigen (MCA), (XeSiAs-Neu5Gc).

Air pollution and particulate matter (PM) are the leading environmental cause of death worldwide. Exposure limits have lowered to increase the protection of human health; accordingly, it becomes increasingly important to understand the toxicological mechanisms on cellular models at low airborne PM concentrations which are relevant for actual human exposure. The use of air liquid interface (ALI) models, which mimic the interaction between airborne pollutants and lung epithelia, is also gaining importance in inhalation toxicological studies.

The approach was based on the combination of membrane filtration and fermentation. A strain selected to be used as starter for the fermentation of the ultrafiltration protein-rich retentate (R-UF) obtained from RCEW.

Altered starch quality with full knockout of GBSS gene function in potato was achieved using CRISPR-Cas9 technology, through transient transfection and regeneration from isolated protoplasts. Site-directed mutagenesis (SDM) has shown great progress in introducing precisely targeted mutations. Engineered CRISPR-Cas9 has received increased focus compared to other SDM techniques, since the method is easily adapted to different targets.

By means of a literature survey, earthworm species of significant relevance for soil functions in different biogeographical regions of Europe (Atlantic, Boreal, Mediterranean) were identified. These focal earthworm species, defined here according to the EFSA Guidance Document on the environmental risk assessment (ERA) of genetically modified plants, are typical for arable soils under crop rotations with maize and/or potatoes within the three regions represented by Ireland, Sweden and Spain, respectively. Focal earthworm species were selected following a matrix of four steps: Identification of functional groups, categorization of non-target species, ranking species on ecological criteria, and final selection of focal species.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFDifferent zinc oxide nanostructured morphologies were grown on photolithographically patterned silicon/silicon dioxide substrates by dielectrophoresis technique using different solvents, such as water and ethanol, obtaining rod-like and net-like nanostructures, respectively. The formation of continuous nanostructures was confirmed by scanning electron microscopic, atomic force microscopic images, and electrical characterizations. The rod-like zinc oxide nanostructures were observed in the 10 μm gap between the fingers in the pattern, whereas net-like nanostructures were formed independently of microgap.

Genetic differences in the Posidonia oceanica meadow of Monterosso al Mare (NW Mediterranean, Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) "Cinque Terre") were compared in three stations, at an increasing distance from a source of impact (beach nourishment) in the recent decade. Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis showed a higher genetic variability (>20 %) in the area directly subjected to the stress, increasing with time. Clone integration, confirmed by phenotypic analysis, showed increases both in shoot density and leaf length connected to genetic differences observed in DNA fingerprints of new shoots.

This preliminary work deals with the influence of packaging on the degradation of an Italian soft cheese studied by NMR. The NMR profiles of aqueous cheese extracts were acquired as a function of time during storage of cheese inside and outside the original package. From the NMR spectra 15 metabolites are quantified and used in a kinetic degradation model and in a multivariate algorithm in order to evaluate the changes in the metabolic composition of cheese stored under different conditions.
