From AD 567-568, at the onset of the Avar period, populations from the Eurasian Steppe settled in the Carpathian Basin for approximately 250 years. Extensive sampling for archaeogenomics (424 individuals) and isotopes, combined with archaeological, anthropological and historical contextualization of four Avar-period cemeteries, allowed for a detailed description of the genomic structure of these communities and their kinship and social practices. We present a set of large pedigrees, reconstructed using ancient DNA, spanning nine generations and comprising around 300 individuals.

Perceptions of dog owners and veterinary professionals (surgeons/nurses) can influence the preventive healthcare and treatment provided to dogs, especially at the senior life-stage, when chronic diseases become more common. This study compared perceptions of healthcare of dogs as they age between dog owners and veterinary professionals. Data from two online surveys (owners:  = 633, veterinary professionals:  = 305) examined perceived need for veterinary visits and vaccinations.

Revisiting Hafner's Azapentalenes: The Chemistry of 1,3-Bis(dimethylamino)-2-azapentalene.

Stable azaheterocyclic derivatives of pentalene have been reported by the group of Hafner in the 1970s. However, these structures remained of low interest until recently, when they started to be investigated in the context of organic light-emitting diodes' (OLEDs') development. Herein, we revisit the synthesis of stable azapentalene derivative 1,3-bis(dimethylamino)-2-azapentalene and further explore its properties both computationally and experimentally.

Projected Atomic Orbitals As Optimal Virtual Space for Excited State Projection-Based Embedding Calculations.

The projected atomic orbital (PAO) technique is presented for the construction of virtual orbital spaces in projection-based embedding (PbE) applications. The proposed straightforward procedure produces a set of virtual orbitals that are used in the final, high-level calculation of the embedded active subsystem. The PAO scheme is demonstrated on intermolecular potentials of bimolecular complexes in ground and excited states, including Rydberg excitations.

Temporal changes in environmental conditions may play a major role in the year-to-year variation in fitness consequences of behaviours. Identifying environmental drivers of such variation is crucial to understand the evolutionary trajectories of behaviours in natural contexts. However, our understanding of how environmental variation influences behaviours in the wild remains limited.

Fate of Chiral Symmetries in the Quark-Gluon Plasma from an Instanton-Based Random Matrix Model of QCD.

We propose a new way of understanding how chiral symmetry is realized in the high temperature phase of QCD. Based on the finding that a simple free instanton gas precisely describes the details of the lowest part of the spectrum of the lattice overlap Dirac operator, we propose an instanton-based random matrix model of QCD with dynamical quarks. Simulations of this model reveal that even for small quark mass the Dirac spectral density has a singularity at the origin, caused by a dilute gas of free instantons.

Evidence for a competitive relationship between executive functions and statistical learning.

The ability of the brain to extract patterns from the environment and predict future events, known as statistical learning, has been proposed to interact in a competitive manner with prefrontal lobe-related networks and their characteristic cognitive or executive functions. However, it remains unclear whether these cognitive functions also possess a competitive relationship with implicit statistical learning across individuals and at the level of latent executive function components. In order to address this currently unknown aspect, we investigated, in two independent experiments (N = 186, N = 157), the relationship between implicit statistical learning, measured by the Alternating Serial Reaction Time task, and executive functions, measured by multiple neuropsychological tests.

Microstructure Evolution during High-Pressure Torsion in a 7xxx AlZnMgZr Alloy.

A homogenized, supersaturated AlZnMgZr alloy was processed via severe plastic deformation (SPD) using a high-pressure torsion (HPT) technique for different revolutions at room temperature to obtain an ultrafine-grained (UFG) microstructure. The microstructure and mechanical properties of the UFG samples were then studied using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and tensile and hardness measurements. The main purpose was to study the effect of shear strain on the evolution of the microstructure of the investigated alloy.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic placed an extraordinary burden on health care workers (HCW), who are reported to suffer from great mental stress. The current study investigates the mental health of HCW in the later phases of the pandemic.

Methods: HCW completed the following questionnaires online (06/2021-02/2022, =159): demographics (age, gender, profession, ward), Impact of Event Scale (IES-R, posttraumatic stress), State Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI-S, state anxiety), stress-coping questionnaire (SVF-78), and bespoke corona-specific stress and protective-factor questions (5 items each).

Soil salinity and sodicity is a worldwide problem that affects the composition and activity of bacterial communities and results from elevated salt and sodium contents. Depending on the degree of environmental pressure and the combined effect of other factors, haloalkalitolerant and haloalkaliphilic bacterial communities will be selected. These bacteria play a potential role in the maintenance and restoration of salt-affected soils; however, until recently, only a limited number of studies have simultaneously studied the bacterial diversity and activity of saline-sodic soils.

The present investigation focuses on assessing the water quality of groundwater surrounding brick kilns in the Jammu district of Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). At 43 different brick kiln sites in both north and south regions of Jammu, concentrations of heavy metals were measured using established techniques. The elements zinc, copper, iron, lead, cadmium, nickel, and manganese were analyzed utilizing an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS).

Additionally, related long-term studies on bird reproduction tend to concentrate on breeding onset, even though other aspects of breeding could also be sensitive to the diverse weather aspects. This study aimed to explore how multiple aspects of breeding (breeding onset, hatching delay, breeding season length, clutch size, fledgling number) were associated with different weather components.
