Although the benefit for any type of antifungal prophylaxis in patients with acute myelogenous leukaemia is well accepted, less is known about the risk for invasive fungal infections (IFIs) and the optimal prophylaxis strategies in patients with acute lymphocytic leukaemia (ALL). Based on recent studies, ALL is a disease that appears to be associated with significant risk for IFIs. The pharmacokinetic interactions between azoles and vincristine, an antineoplastic agent that is part of modern combination chemotherapies in ALL, results in clinically significant neurotoxicity that makes the use of azoles problematic.

In the last few years, infections caused by dermatophytes along with a concomitant increase in the number of difficult to treat cases have increasingly been recognised, indicating that dermatophytosis remains a challenging public health problem. The majority of infections are caused by Trichophyton rubrum and Trichophyton mentagrophytes complex. Terbinafine, an allylamine antifungal used orally and topically is considered to be a first-line drug in the therapy of dermatophyte infections.

Influenza virus infection is now recognised as a risk factor for invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA). Delays in diagnosis contribute to delayed commencement of antifungal therapy. In addition, the emergence of resistance to first-line triazole antifungal agents puts emphasis on early detection to prevent adverse outcomes.

The incidence of invasive fungal infections (IFIs) caused by uncommon Candida species with diverse virulence and susceptibility profiles has increased in recent years. Due to scarce clinical and experimental data on the pathogenicity of Candida auris, the aim of this study was to evaluate and compare the virulence of two rare clinically relevant species, C. auris and Candida haemulonii with Candida glabrata and Candida albicans in an immunocompetent murine model of disseminated infection.

Candida species frequently cause blood stream infections and are reported to be the third to tenth most commonly isolated pathogens. Guidelines and standardised treatment algorithms provided by professional organisations aim to facilitate decision-making regarding diagnosis, management and treatment of candidaemia. In routine clinical practise, however, it may be challenging to comply with these guidelines.
