The biological mechanisms and potential clinical impact of heterotopic ossification (HO) in colorectal neoplasms are not fully understood. This study investigates the clinicopathological characteristics of colorectal neoplasms associated with HO and examines the potential role of the bone morphogenetic protein (BMP) pathway in development of HO. An artificial intelligence (AI) based classification of colorectal cancers (CRC) exhibiting HO and their association with consensus molecular subtypes (CMS) is performed.

The roles and responsibilities of radiation therapists (RTTs) are many and varied. Professional expectations are influenced by the technology available, as well as the level of autonomy RTTs have in their daily practice. This professional range requires RTTs to possess a unique set of ever evolving skills, posing challenges from an educational perspective.

Introduction: Routine treatment with preoperative systemic chemotherapy (CTx) in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) remains controversial due to lack of consistent evidence demonstrating associated survival benefits. This study aimed to determine the effect of preoperative CTx on overall survival (OS) compared to surgery alone and to assess hospital and oncological network variation in 5-year OS.
Methods: This was a population-based study of all patients who underwent liver resection for CRLM between 2014 and 2017 in the Netherlands.

Introduction: In 2017, the Southampton guideline stated that minimally invasive liver resections (MILR) should considered standard practice for minor liver resections. This study aimed to assess recent implementation rates of minor MILR, factors associated with performing MILR, hospital variation, and outcomes in patients with colorectal liver metastases (CRLM).
Methods: This population-based study included all patients who underwent minor liver resection for CRLM in the Netherlands between 2014 and 2021.

Purpose: The number of M1-like and M2-like tumour-associated macrophages (TAMs) and their ratio can play a role in breast cancer development and progression. Early clinical trials using macrophage targeting compounds are currently ongoing. However, the most optimal detection method of M1-like and M2-like macrophage subsets and their clinical relevance in breast cancer is still unclear.

Introduction: Textbook outcome (TO) is a composite outcome measure covering the surgical care process in a single outcome measure. TO has an advantage over single outcome parameters with low event rates, which have less discriminating impact to detect differences between hospitals. This study aimed to assess factors associated with TO, and evaluate hospital and network variation after case-mix correction in TO rates for liver surgery.

Purpose: Determining the estrogen receptor (ER) status is essential in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) management. Whole-body ER imaging with 16α-[F]fluoro-17β-estradiol positron emission tomography ([F]FES-PET) is increasingly used for this purpose. To establish the clinical validity of the [F]FES-PET, we studied the diagnostic accuracy of qualitative and quantitative [F]FES-PET assessment to predict ER expression by immunohistochemistry in a metastasis.

Academic research is important to face unmet medical needs. The Oncological community encounters many hurdles in setting up multicenter investigator-driven trials mainly due to administrative complexity. The purpose of a network organization at a multinational level is to facilitate clinical trials through standardization, coordination, and education for drug development and regulatory approval.

Introduction: Widespread differences in patient demographics and disease burden between hospitals for resection of colorectal liver metastases (CRLM) have been described. In the Netherlands, networks consisting of at least one tertiary referral centre and several regional hospitals have been established to optimize treatment and outcomes. The aim of this study was to assess variation in case-mix, and outcomes between these networks.

Esophageal cancers confer a major health challenge and are highly aggressive malignancies with poor prognosis. Esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) is one of the two major histopathological subtypes of esophageal cancer. Despite advances in treatment modalities, the prognosis of patients with EAC remains poor, with a 5-year survival rate that rarely exceeds 30% in patients treated with curative intent.
