Purpose: The growing number of colorectal cancer (CRC) survivors often have multiple chronic conditions. Comparing nonmetastatic CRC survivors and matched noncancer controls, our objectives were to determine the odds of CRC survivors being diagnosed with cardiovascular disease (CVD)-related chronic conditions and their likelihood of control during the year after CRC diagnosis.
Patients And Methods: We retrospectively identified patients diagnosed with nonmetastatic CRC in the Veterans Affairs health care system from fiscal years 2009 to 2012 and matched each with up to 3 noncancer control patients.

We assessed the effects of limited application of sacral neurostimulation (SNS) during bladder filling on bladder capacity using our previously published SNS model in rats. Female Sprague-Dawley rats ( = 24) were urethane anesthetized (1.2 g/kg sc) and implanted with jugular venous and transvesical bladder catheters.

Background: Although skeletal-related events (SREs) are linked with a reduced quality of life and worse outcomes, to the authors' knowledge the factors that predict SREs are minimally understood. The objective of the current study was to identify predictors of SREs and all-cause mortality among men with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC).
Methods: Data were collected on 837 men with bone mCRPC at 8 Veterans Affairs medical centers within the Shared Equal Access Regional Cancer Hospital (SEARCH) database from 2000 through 2017.

Anxiety disorders are among the most prevalent psychiatric conditions. Despite many proven pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments available, high rates of partial response and low rates of long-term remission remain. Ketamine has been receiving increasing attention as an interventional treatment modality in psychiatry, especially among refractory conditions, including major depressive disorder.

Purpose Of Review: Here, we discuss how esophageal motor testing plays important roles in patients with suspected gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). In addition to guiding appropriate placement of catheters for ambulatory reflux monitoring, esophageal high-resolution manometry (HRM) rules out confounding diagnoses, such as achalasia spectrum disorders, that can present with symptoms similar to that of GERD, but are managed very differently.
Recent Findings: HRM performed with impedance in the post-prandial setting (PP-HRIM) can assess for rumination syndrome or supragastric belching, which should be directed towards behavioral interventions.

Study Objective: To determine whether thiamine prophylaxis decreases the incidence of ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy in patients receiving ifosfamide for the treatment of lymphoma.
Design: Retrospective, multi-center, cohort study.
Patients: A total of 73 patients who received 187 total cycles of ifosfamide, carboplatin, and etoposide chemotherapy for the treatment of lymphoma were included in this study.

Diabetes mellitus among older men has been associated with increased bone mineral density but paradoxically increased fracture risk. Given the interactions among medication treatment, glycemic control, and diabetes-associated comorbidities, the relative effects of each factor remains unclear. This retrospective study includes 652,901 male veterans aged ≥65 years with diabetes and baseline hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) value.

Background: Although self-management is recommended for persons with epilepsy, its optimal strategies and effects are uncertain.
Purpose: To evaluate the components and efficacy of self-management interventions in the treatment of epilepsy in community-dwelling persons.

Background: Chronic pain conditions are common among both male and female Iraq/Afghanistan-era veterans and can have substantial negative impacts on quality of life and function. Although in general women tend to report higher levels of pain intensity than men, findings remain mixed on whether gender differences in pain exist in Iraq/Afghanistan-era veterans. Additionally, the relationships between functional impairment, pain intensity, and gender remain unknown.

Importance: Anatomical scoring systems for coronary artery disease, such as the SYNTAX (Synergy Between Percutaneous Coronary Intervention [PCI] With Taxus and Cardiac Surgery) score, are well established tools for understanding patient risk. However, they are cumbersome to compute manually for large data sets, limiting their use across broad and varied cohorts.
Objective: To adapt an anatomical scoring system for use with registry data, allowing facile and automatic calculation of scores and association with clinical outcomes among patients undergoing percutaneous or surgical revascularization.

Purpose Of Review: Telehealth interventions for alcohol misuse may be especially impactful in hypertensive populations because of the increased blood pressure associated with alcohol overconsumption. This review examines emerging telehealth interventions for alcohol misuse and categorizes them according to phases of the treatment process.
Recent Findings: Evidence for telehealth cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is preliminary but suggests it is efficacious and increased access to treatment.

Telemedicine can facilitate population health management by extending the reach of providers to efficiently care for high-risk, high-utilization populations. However, for telemedicine to be maximally useful, data collected using telemedicine technologies must be reliable and readily available to healthcare providers. To address current gaps in integration of patient-generated health data into the electronic health record (EHR), we examined 2 patient-facing platforms, Epic MyChart and Apple HealthKit, both of which facilitated the uploading of blood glucose data into the EHR as part of a diabetes telemedicine intervention.

Background: Self-management is integral for control of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Patient self-management is improved when they receive real-time information on their health status and behaviors and ongoing facilitation from health professionals. However, timely information for these behaviors is notably absent in the health care system.

Frail older adults are at increased risk of poor clinical outcomes. Frailty assessment is therefore important in clinical trials to understand the benefits and harms of interventions. However, consensus is lacking on how frailty should be assessed.

: To determine if an upper extremity functional survey may identify which patients will have eye drop administration difficulty. : Participants with glaucoma treated at a Veterans Affairs Eye Clinic who did not self-report 100% medication adherence were enrolled in a cross-sectional study. Participants were scored on their observed ability to place a drop into the eye (accuracy) and express no more than one drop from the bottle (efficiency).

Background: Older adults with cardiometabolic conditions are typically seen by multiple providers. Management by multiple providers may compromise care continuity and increase health expenditures for older adults, which may partly explain the inverse association between continuity and Medicare expenditures found in prior studies. This study sought to examine whether all-cause admission, outpatient expenditures or total expenditures were associated with the number of prescribers of cardiometabolic medications.

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is associated with increased chemokines, cytokines, and growth factors in the diseased kidney. We found that both isoforms of IL-1, IL-1α and IL-1β, were upregulated in ADPKD tissues. Here, we used a unique murine ADPKD model with selective deletion of polycystin-1 () in the kidney (KPKD1) to study the role of IL-1 signaling in ADPKD progression.
