Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates whether body weights collected through cellular scales and electronic health records (EHR) correlate with traditional in-person measurements in weight loss trials.
  • - Comparison of weight data from two different weight loss studies (Log2Lose and MAINTAIN) shows slight variances between remote measurements and in-person weights, but both methods provide consistent direction and magnitude of weight change.
  • - The findings suggest that using cellular scales and EHRs is a viable, cost-effective alternative to in-person measurements for evaluating weight changes in trials, despite minor differences.

Significance Statement: Activation of the type 1 IL-1 receptor (IL-1R1) triggers a critical innate immune signaling cascade that contributes to the pathogenesis of AKI. However, blockade of IL-1 signaling in AKI has not consistently demonstrated kidney protection. The current murine experiments show that IL-1R1 activation in the proximal tubule exacerbates toxin-induced AKI and cell death through local suppression of apolipoprotein M.

The purpose of this secondary analysis was to determine what portion of the effects of a Diabetes Prevention Program-like intervention on metabolic syndrome (MetS) could be achieved with exercise alone, as well as to determine the relative importance of exercise intensity and amount to the total exercise effect on MetS. Sedentary, overweight adults with prediabetes were randomly assigned to one of four 6-month interventions: 1) low-amount/moderate-intensity (10 kcal/kg/week at 50% peak ); 2) high-amount/moderate-intensity (16 kcal/kg/week at 50% peak ); 3) high-amount/vigorous-intensity (16 kcal/kg/week at 75% peak ); or 4) diet (7% weight loss) plus low-amount/moderate-intensity (10 kcal/kg/week at 50% peak ). The primary outcome of this secondary analysis was change in the MetS z-score.

Patterns of psychotropic drug use in veterans with epilepsy: Do drug interactions matter?

Epilepsy Behav

August 2023

Wm.S Middleton Memorial VA, Department of Psychiatry, Madison, WI, USA. Electronic address:

Rationale: Patients with epilepsy are likely to suffer from psychiatric comorbidities, including depression and anxiety. They often require treatment with multiple psychotropic drugs (PDs). While it is clear that CYP-inducing ASMs (EIASMs) can increase the oral clearance of multiple medications (thus lowering systemic exposure), it is less clear that all PK interactions are clinically meaningful (e.

Depression associated with traumatic brain injury (TBI) is believed to be clinically distinct from primary major depressive disorder (MDD) and may be less responsive to conventional treatments. Brain connectivity differences between the dorsal attention network (DAN), default mode network (DMN), and subgenual cingulate have been implicated in TBI and MDD. To characterize these distinctions, we applied precision functional mapping of brain network connectivity to resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging data from five published patient cohorts, four discovery cohorts ( = 93), and one replication cohort ( = 180).

Article Synopsis
  • The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) is a key hormonal system that regulates water and sodium balance, blood flow to the kidneys, and blood vessel constriction, impacting overall blood pressure levels.
  • When RAS is overactive, such as through increased angiotensin II (Ang II), it can lead to hypertension and damage to organs, with Ang II receptors also contributing to cardiovascular and kidney diseases independently of blood pressure.
  • Recent research highlights the complex roles of various RAS components, showing that some can have protective effects (like angiotensin 1-7) against the harmful effects of Ang II, while studies on gene-deleted mice reveal specific functions of Ang II receptors in different cell types in the cardiovascular

J Cardiovasc Electrophysiol

July 2023

Division of Cardiovascular Disease, Section of Cardiac Electrophysiology, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, North Carolina, USA.

Introduction: Accurate localization of septal outflow tract premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) is often difficult due to frequent mid-myocardial or protected origin. Compared with traditional activation mapping, CARTO Ripple mapping provides visualization of all captured electrogram data without assignment of a specific local activation time and thus may enhance PVC localization.

Methods: Electroanatomic maps for consecutive catheter ablation procedures for septal outflow tract PVCs (July 2018-December 2020) were analyzed.
