Cancer immunotherapy with chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cells can cause immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome (ICANS). However, the molecular mechanisms leading to ICANS are not well understood. Here we examined the role of microglia using mouse models and cohorts of individuals with ICANS.

This study reports the preliminary efficacy of an innovative school-based, technology-enhanced social-emotional learning program called "mindfulness-based collaborative social reasoning" (MBCSR) for middle school students. MBCSR was developed by an interdisciplinary team of educational psychologists, mindfulness researchers, computer scientists, and health experts. We integrated the strengths of contemplative approaches, collaborative small group discussions, learning technology, and multidimensional assessments of students' social-emotional outcomes.

Article Synopsis
  • Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumors (IMTs) are intermediate-grade tumors of the bladder that commonly recur but rarely spread to other parts of the body, and this study reviews their clinical presentation and management options.
  • The study analyzed 75 case reports, finding that most patients are around 36 years old, often present with hematuria, and the majority of tumors are anaplastic lymphoma kinase positive; various surgical approaches were used for treatment.
  • Complete surgical removal of the tumor is essential for effective management, and distinguishing IMTs from other tumor types like sarcoma is critical for achieving the best patient outcomes.

The Role of Consumerism in Pharmacy Education.

Am J Pharm Educ

June 2024

College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, Butler University, Indianapolis, IN, USA.

The notion of consumerism and that students are customers of pharmacy colleges was explored by proponents and opponents of the idea. First, a working definition of a "customer" in pharmacy education is pondered with respect to the roles and responsibilities of students and schools/colleges of pharmacy. Second, the pros and cons of "student-centered" education are considered in the light of students and their families being consumers of the educational experience.

Our institution introduced fixed-dose prothrombin complex concentrate (PCC) to streamline order verification and medication administration. Previous studies using fixed-dose PCC for vitamin K antagonist reversal showed comparable efficacy to weight-based dosing. To compare fixed versus weight-based PCC dosing for reversal of Factor Xa Inhibitor (FXaI) effects.

Impact of cost on prescribing diabetes medications for older adults with type 2 diabetes in the outpatient setting.

Res Social Adm Pharm

August 2024

Duquesne University, Division of Pharmaceutical, Administrative, and Social Sciences, 600 Forbes Avenue, Pittsburgh, PA, 15282, USA.

Background: Newer diabetes medications have cardiorenal benefits beyond blood sugar lowering that make them a preferred treatment option in many patients. Despite this, studies have shown that prescribing of these medications remains suboptimal with medication costs being hypothesized as a reason for underutilization.

Objective: To understand clinicians' decision-making processes for prescribing diabetes medications in older adults, focusing on higher cost medications.

The American Diabetes Association advises clinicians of the potential for insulin overbasalization in the management of type 2 diabetes. Described as the titration of basal insulin beyond an appropriate dose, overbasalization increases risks for adverse effects such as hypoglycemia and weight gain without achieving the glycemic targets needed to optimally manage the disease. There is a need to determine the prevalence of and clinical factors that can lead to overbasalization.

Objective: Changes in sleep quality and quantity are commonly endorsed by individuals following a concussion. Limited data exists examining the role of sleep disturbances within 72 hours, and throughout recovery, from concussion. The objective of this study was to determine if the number of days to symptom resolution varied between collegiate athletes with or without sleep-related symptoms following a concussion.

Pharmaceutical proteins at the interfaces and the role of albumin.

Biotechnol Prog

October 2024

Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Duquesne University, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA.

A critical measure of the quality of pharmaceutical proteins is the preservation of native conformations of the active pharmaceutical ingredients. Denaturation of the active proteins in any step before administration into patients could lead to loss of potency and/or aggregation, which is associated with an increased risk of immunogenicity of the products. Interfacial stress enhances protein instability as their adsorption to the air-liquid and liquid-solid interfaces are implicated in the formation of denatured proteins and aggregates.

Purpose: The study purpose was to compare the practice patterns captured by self-reported logbook data and those recorded by a computerized home program application. The current study is part of a larger single-case research design study aimed at investigating the effect of logbook use on home program adherence in people with aphasia poststroke.

Method: Data from six adults with chronic aphasia with interest in improving their reading were used in this secondary analysis.

Electron Accumulation Induced by Electron Injection-Incomplete Discharge on NiFe LDH for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution Reaction.

Small

August 2024

State Key Laboratory of Inorganic Synthesis and Preparative Chemistry, College of Chemistry, Jilin University, Changchun, 130012, P. R. China.

Optimizing the local electronic structure of electrocatalysts can effectively lower the energy barrier of electrochemical reactions, thus enhancing the electrocatalytic activity. However, the intrinsic contribution of the electronic effect is still experimentally unclear. In this work, the electron injection-incomplete discharge approach to achieve the electron accumulation (EA) degree on the nickel-iron layered double hydroxide (NiFe LDH) is proposed, to reveal the intrinsic contribution of EA toward oxygen evolution reaction (OER).

The relation between meniscal dynamics and tibiofemoral kinematics.

Sci Rep

April 2024

Department of Orthopedic Surgery and Traumatology, Ghent University Hospital, Corneel Heymanslaan 10, 9000, Ghent, Belgium.

Over the past 30 years, research on meniscal kinematics has been limited by challenges such as low-resolution imaging and capturing continuous motion from static data. This study aimed to develop a computational knee model that overcomes these limitations and enables the continuous assessment of meniscal dynamics. A high-resolution MRI dataset (n = 11) was acquired in 4 configurations of knee flexion.
