Analgesic efficacy of median nerve stimulation in mice with chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathymodulation of brain-derived neurotrophic factor expression.

J Tradit Chin Med

August 2023

Department of Physiology and Medical Science, College of Medicine and Brain Research Institute, Chungnam National University, Daejeon 35015, Republic of Korea.

Article Synopsis
  • Chemotherapeutic agents like docetaxel can cause severe pain known as chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), and this study focuses on how low-frequency median nerve stimulation (LFMNS) can help relieve that pain in mice.
  • Male ICR mice were given docetaxel to induce CIPN and then treated with LFMNS, with pain responses measured using specific filaments and BDNF protein levels evaluated in their nerve samples.
  • The results showed that LFMNS significantly reduced pain sensitivity and BDNF expression linked to CIPN, suggesting it could be a viable non-drug treatment for patients experiencing these symptoms.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most prevalent and lethal cancer types around the world. Most of the CRC patients are treated with chemotherapeutic drugs alone or combined. However, up to 90% of metastatic cancer patients experience the failure of treatment mostly because of the acquired drug resistance, which can be led to multidrug resistance (MDR).

Docetaxel, a chemotherapeutic agent used to treat breast cancer, produces a robust painful neuropathy that is aggravated by mechanical and thermal stimuli. This study was undertaken to investigate the analgesic effects of electrical stimulation on docetaxel-induced neuropathic pain in mice and to identify associated changes in ultrasound vocalizations. Peripheral neuropathy was induced with intraperitoneally injected docetaxel (5 mg/kg) on 3 times every 2 days in male ICR mice.

This study examined the effect of a portable low-frequency electrostimulation (ES) device on patients diagnosed with (CIPN) immediately after chemotherapy for breast cancer. A single-center, randomized, placebo-controlled trial was conducted. A total of 72 patients newly diagnosed with CIPN were enrolled and randomly placed into the ES (n = 36) or the sham ES group (SES; n = 36).

Introduction: Aromatase inhibitor-induced arthralgia (AIA) is a major adverse event of aromatase inhibitors (AIs) and leads to premature discontinuation of AI therapy in breast cancer patients. The objective of this protocol for a systematic review and network meta-analysis (NMA) is to provide the methodology to compare the change in pain intensity between different AIA treatments and demonstrate the rank probabilities for different treatments by combining all available direct and indirect evidence.

Background: In recent studies, afatinib, a second-generation inhibitor, showed superior outcomes, when compared to the first-generation of EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), such as erlotinib and gefitinib, in patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) harboring mutations of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR). Patients who receive TKIs with a significant initial efficacy, inevitably experience an acquired resistance (AR) within 9 to 13 months. Traditional Korean medicine may have synergistic effects when combined with chemotherapy or radiotherapy.
