Regeneration of oral soft tissue defects, including mucogingival defects associated with the recession or loss of gingival and/or mucosal tissues around teeth and implants, is crucial for restoring oral tissue form, function, and health. This study presents a novel approach using three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting to fabricate individualized grafts with precise size, shape, and layer-by-layer cellular organization. A multicomponent polysaccharide/fibrinogen-based bioink is developed, and bioprinting parameters are optimized to create shape-controlled oral soft tissue (gingival) constructs.

Objectives: To develop a reproducible, reliable clinical index of alveolar bone grafting (ABG) outcome based on the eruption position of the cleft canine tooth and determine the association between eruption position and radiographic outcome at 6 months post-grafting.

Methods: Children with complete, non-syndromic, unilateral/bilateral cleft lip and palate in the West of Scotland were identified. Post-ABG radiographic outcome (Kindelan index) and canine eruption position in children with a cleft of the alveolus who had undergone ABG were documented.

Background: The facial landmark annotation of 3D facial images is crucial in clinical orthodontics and orthognathic surgeries for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning. While manual landmarking has traditionally been the gold standard, it is labour-intensive and prone to variability.

Objective: This study presents a framework for automated landmark detection in 3D facial images within a clinical context, using convolutional neural networks (CNNs), and it assesses its accuracy in comparison to that of ground-truth data.

Article Synopsis
  • The study looked at how well different cleaning solutions kill germs and dissolve tooth tissue.
  • Researchers used 240 human teeth to test 6 different cleaning solutions and counted how many germs were left after.
  • The results showed that sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) worked the best at killing bacteria and breaking down tooth tissue.

  • A study was done to see how long two types of dental tools called rotary endodontic files last before breaking.
  • The tools tested were TruNatomy and ProTaper Next, using a special curved tube to simulate real dental work.
  • Results showed that TruNatomy files lasted longer, meaning they were stronger and broke less easily than ProTaper Next files.

3D Head Shape Feature Analysis of Zika-Infected Children.

Viruses

September 2024

Dental Hospital School, College of MVLS, University of Glasgow, Glasgow G2 3JZ, UK.

Article Synopsis
  • Congenital Zika syndrome (CZS) is a condition caused by Zika virus infection during pregnancy, leading to birth defects like small head size (microcephaly).
  • The study looked at 3D images of the heads of babies with CZS and compared them to babies without the infection to find differences in size and shape.
  • Researchers found that using a specific measurement called the head height to head circumference ratio (HH/HC) is more effective for diagnosing CZS than the usual method of just measuring head size.

  • Pediatric mandibular condyle fractures can lead to serious issues like pain and facial deformities if not treated correctly, yet there’s no agreed-upon treatment method.
  • A study analyzed how these fractures are managed in children aged 0 to 16 across 14 maxillofacial departments worldwide, examining treatment approaches over an 11-year period.
  • The research found that treatment methods varied significantly among departments, with expectant management, closed treatment, and open reduction being utilized, all showing effectiveness with low complication rates.

Br J Oral Maxillofac Surg

November 2024

Dundee Dental Research Hospital & School, University of Dundee, Scotland. Electronic address:

Temporomandibular joint disorders are common, with alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement (TMJR) being one method of addressing chronic pain and movement limitations that cannot otherwise be managed. Despite this, TMJR has known complications that can lead to failure. We present our experience of managing these cases and review the current evidence on the management and outcomes of alloplastic TMJR failures.

Distant metastasis to salivary glands is a very rare event and most often associated with primary malignancies of the skin. Only 1-4% of all salivary gland tumours manifest with metastasis. Carcinomas of the breast, lung, kidney and prostate are those primaries that may also potentially metastasize to salivary glands.

Article Synopsis
  • Palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK) is a skin condition that causes thick skin and abrasions on the hands and feet, linked to genetic factors, including mutations in a specific gene.
  • A new harmful variant (c.794G>C, p.Arg265Pro) in this gene was found in a 60-year-old female PPK patient, who had various symptoms such as skin changes, brittle nails, and thin hair.
  • This study suggests that the identified gene variant affects the stability of a protein crucial for WNT signaling, which is important for skin health, indicating that disrupted signaling may contribute to the development of PPK in the patient.

Introduction: The curricula for UK dental specialty training have recently been under review and until 2024, completion of a research component during training in Dental Public Health, Oral Microbiology and Orthodontics has been mandatory (with an alternative route for Orthodontics involving the submission of two scientific papers for those trainees not wishing to undertake a higher degree). Anecdotally, some trainees in other dental specialties choose to undertake higher degrees alongside specialty training.

Aims: The aims were to investigate how many dental specialty registrars study for higher degrees alongside specialty training, and whether undertaking a higher degree alongside specialty training has an impact on completion of training, research skills, research experience, patient care and career opportunities.
