A new clinical index scale for measuring secondary alveolar bone grafting success based on canine eruption.

Objectives: To develop a reproducible, reliable clinical index of alveolar bone grafting (ABG) outcome based on the eruption position of the cleft canine tooth and determine the association between eruption position and radiographic outcome at 6 months post-grafting.

Methods: Children with complete, non-syndromic, unilateral/bilateral cleft lip and palate in the West of Scotland were identified. Post-ABG radiographic outcome (Kindelan index) and canine eruption position in children with a cleft of the alveolus who had undergone ABG were documented.

Perceived effective and ineffective dental terminology when treating paediatric patients: a cross-sectional survey.

Aims To determine the words that paediatric dental team members perceive to be effective and ineffective for describing dental procedures and instruments to children and to assess if these are influenced by the age and gender of the child.Methods A voluntary, anonymous questionnaire was distributed to paediatric dental staff in NHS Scotland. Questions included participants' demographics, which words they perceive to be effective and ineffective for describing 11 dental procedures and instruments, and whether word choice was affected by the gender and/or age of the patient.

Is occlusal contact re-established within 6 months after bonding of a fixed anterior bite plane in adolescents with a Class II division 2 incisor relationship? A randomised controlled trial.

Objective: To determine if re-establishment of occlusal contact was achieved within 6 months after insertion of a fixed anterior bite plane in individuals with Class II division 2 incisor relationship, and to evaluate the occlusal and vertical skeletal changes and acceptance of the intra-oral scanner and bite plane.

Design: Single-centre two-arm parallel group randomised controlled trial with 1:1 allocation to intervention and control groups.

Insights into research activities of senior dental students in the Middle East: A multicenter preliminary study.

Background: Despite the increasing recognition of the importance of research in undergraduate dental education, limited studies have explored the nature of undergraduate research activities in dental schools in the Middle East region. This study aimed to evaluate the research experience of final year dental students from three dental schools in the Middle East.

Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted among final-year dental students from three institutions, namely Jordan University of Science and Technology, University of Sharjah (UAE), and Oman Dental College.

Perceptions of undertaking a higher degree alongside dental specialty training: A cross-sectional survey of UK dental specialty trainees.

Introduction: The curricula for UK dental specialty training have recently been under review and until 2024, completion of a research component during training in Dental Public Health, Oral Microbiology and Orthodontics has been mandatory (with an alternative route for Orthodontics involving the submission of two scientific papers for those trainees not wishing to undertake a higher degree). Anecdotally, some trainees in other dental specialties choose to undertake higher degrees alongside specialty training.

Aims: The aims were to investigate how many dental specialty registrars study for higher degrees alongside specialty training, and whether undertaking a higher degree alongside specialty training has an impact on completion of training, research skills, research experience, patient care and career opportunities.

Salivary oxidative stress biomarkers in periodontitis-free smokers: a cross sectional study.

Background: Salivary oxidative stress has been extensively studied with attempts to correlate changes in the oxidative stress markers with local and systemic factors, including smoking. The objective of this study was to evaluate the influence of two forms of smoking, cigarettes and waterpipe smoking (WPS), on selected oxidative stress biomarkers in saliva.

Methods: Three groups of participants were enrolled into the study, controls (never smokers), cigarette smokers and WPS.

Management of rarely seen internal tunnelling root resorption associated with a maxillary permanent incisor.

This case presents clinical techniques and materials that may be applied in the management of internal tunnelling root resorption, a rare condition which has little published literature.A 25-year-old woman was referred to a specialist centre by her general dental practitioner following an incidental finding of a radiographic radiolucency, suggestive of root resorption associated with tooth 21. A provisional diagnosis of external cervical resorption was made, and following cone beam computed tomography (CBCT), a definitive diagnosis of internal tunnelling root resorption given.

Comparative analysis of diagnostic accuracy in endodontic assessments: dental students vs. artificial intelligence.

Objectives: This study evaluates the comparative diagnostic accuracy of dental students and artificial intelligence (AI), specifically a modified ChatGPT 4, in endodontic assessments related to pulpal and apical conditions. The findings are intended to offer insights into the potential role of AI in augmenting dental education.

Methods: Involving 109 dental students divided into junior (54) and senior (55) groups, the study compared their diagnostic accuracy against ChatGPT's across seven clinical scenarios.

Oral lichen planus and lichenoid lesions - challenges and pitfalls for the general dental practitioner.

Lichen planus is a chronic, mucocutaneous inflammatory condition which, due to its prevalence, will be familiar to the dental profession. However, diverse forms of presentation, important differential diagnosis, potential malignant change and monitoring requirements often result in challenges for those in primary care. This paper looks to examine these challenges and provide information to support those who are involved in recognition and management of patients with lichen planus.

Endodontic management of submerged roots following complicated traumatic dental injury (TDI) in children and adolescents: A systematic review.

Introduction: The International Association of Dental Traumatology (IADT) guidelines include the use of decoronation for the management of complex crown-root fractures but do not outline how this technique is best employed. The aim of this review is to reach a consensus in the management of the root canal system in decoronated permanent teeth undergoing root submergence and to determine whether this has an impact on the success and survival of the retained root.

Materials And Methods: Search included databases MEDLINE via Ebsco, EMBASE via Ovid, Web of Science via Clarivate, PubMed via PubMed.

"Over-reviewing" of research? An analysis of orthodontic reviews.

Introduction: Research overviews may be undertaken to identify gaps in the literature, evaluate existing systematic reviews (SRs), and summarize evidence. This paper aims to profile overviews that have been conducted in orthodontics and related interventions since 2012 and to evaluate the degree of overlap among these overviews.

Methods: Overviews published between January 1, 2012 and June 20, 2023 were identified using an electronic search involving Google Scholar and PubMed.

Development and validation of an assessment sheet for all-ceramic crown preparations: A methodological study.

Background: Dental students learn and practice clinical procedures in clinical skills laboratories. These practices are graded by qualified staff to evaluate the effectiveness of their learning. Valid evaluation requires accuracy and reliability.

Displacement Injuries: Assessment and Management.

This paper aims to aid clinicians in the assessment and immediate management of dental trauma displacement injuries to permanent teeth. Long term sequelae, the impact of such injuries, and the evidence-base for managing these are discussed.Clinical cases are provided to illustrate management challenges and highlight where further evidence-based guidance is needed.

Smoke and mirrors - does smoking cause discolouration of composite restorations?

Data Sources: Searches were carried out across PubMed, Embase, Scopus and Web of Science for studies published until 28th March 2022.

Study Selection: In vitro studies assessing colour stability of resin-based composites (RBCs) exposed to conventional cigarette smoke (CS), tobacco heating systems (THS) or electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) were considered. Included studies used a spectrophotometer or colorimeter for assessment of discolouration and measured discolouration using CIELAB or CIEDE2000 colour difference formulas.

Do electronic cigarette devices/vapes impact the colour of dental ceramics?

Design: In vitro primary research study.

Case Selection And Method: Five frequently used restorative dental ceramic materials (pressable ceramics (PEmax), pressed and layered ceramics (LEmax), layered zirconia (LZr), monolithic zirconia (MZr) and porcelain fused to metal (PFM)) were selected and manufactured in shade A1. Samples of each material were prepared in discs and kept in water at 37°C for 24 hours then aged via thermocycling.

The MAGIC trial: a pragmatic, multicentre, parallel, noninferiority, randomised trial of melatonin versus midazolam in the premedication of anxious children attending for elective surgery under general anaesthesia.

Background: Child anxiety before general anaesthesia and surgery is common. Midazolam is a commonly used premedication to address this. Melatonin is an alternative anxiolytic, however trials evaluating its efficacy in children have delivered conflicting results.

Helping general dental practitioners use the Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need: an assessment of available educational apps.

Introduction The Index of Orthodontic Treatment Need (IOTN) defines who receives treatment on the NHS. The British Orthodontic Society developed the 'Easy IOTN' app to help the dental team use IOTN more effectively.Aim This study aims to investigate the quality of the 'Easy IOTN' app and any alternative mobile apps developed to aid a dentist's ability to use IOTN.

Breaking the error chain with SEE: cascade analysis of endodontic errors in clinical training.

The ongoing endeavors to uncover the link between the prevalent errors in clinical endodontic training and undergraduate education are founded on tentative assumptions. This investigation was aimed at determining if cascade analysis can provide an understanding of the origins and causes of errors and if the sensitivity of student reports to the impact of errors on treatment outcomes can be established.In 2021, a group of investigators from the endodontics department concerned with clinical dental education launched the Study of Endodontic Errors (SEE).

Prevalence of mesio-distal dilaceration in patients presenting for initial orthodontic care: A retrospective study.

Methods: Examining radiographs from a random sample of orthopantomogram images was used to acquire the data. In all, 2,801 dental records were evaluated at Oman Dental College (ODC), Oman.

Evaluating the Role of Inorganic Elements of Camelus Dromedarius Saliva in Protecting Enamel Against Tooth Surface Loss.

The aim of this study was to provide insight into the role of camel's saliva in protecting enamel against erosion and to evaluate the levels of salivary sodium, potassium, calcium, and phosphate ions among 2 groups of camels, those with low-grade tooth surface loss and those with high-grade tooth surface loss. Twenty-eight healthy camels, 5 males and 23 females, aged 20 months to 10 years, were divided into 2 groups. Group I comprise camels with "low-grade tooth surface loss" and Group 2 with "high-grade tooth surface loss.
