We aimed to understand nursing informaticists' perspectives on key challenges, questions, and opportunities for the nursing profession as it prepares for an era of healthcare delivery enriched by artificial intelligence (AI). We found that nursing practice is currently, and will continue to be, directly influenced by AI in healthcare. Educating and training nurses so that they may safely and effectively use AI in their clinical practice and engage in implementation planning and evaluation will help overcome predicted challenges.

Article Synopsis
  • This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive rehabilitation on cognitive and functional outcomes in adult cancer survivors, analyzing studies published until June 2023.
  • A total of 53 studies were included, showing that cognitive rehabilitation had positive effects on cognitive measures, particularly with strategy-based interventions and combination therapies.
  • The findings suggest cognitive rehabilitation can benefit cancer-related cognitive impairment, highlighting the need for nurses to promote awareness and utilization of these interventions among patients and healthcare providers.

Purpose: To determine the short-term complication rates following open reduction and internal fixation of scapula fractures, factors affecting the development of adverse events, and complication rates based on the anatomic location of the fracture.

Methods: Thirty-day complication rates for patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation of the scapula were compared between glenoid, body, coracoid, and acromion fracture locations, as identified by International Classification of Disease codes. Possible adverse events included postoperative surgical site infection, renal insufficiency, intubation, pneumonia, deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, urinary tract infection, wound dehiscence, stroke, and blood transfusion.

Background: Molecular testing of thyroid nodules is an essential tool to help risk stratify nodules with indeterminate cytology. Although ThyroSeq testing has been around for over a decade, there is a paucity of long-term follow-up data on cytologically indeterminate nodules that are determined to be molecularly negative or low-risk. The objective of this study is to assess the outcomes of nodules with indeterminate cytology (Bethesda III or IV) and negative or low-risk ThyroSeq results.

Article Synopsis
  • Research indicates that 20% of children will face a concussion by age 16, with prolonged post-concussive symptoms (PCS) being more severe and lasting longer compared to adults, leading to issues like school absenteeism and social isolation.
  • The study aims to track and analyze the trajectories of PCS in a diverse group of 500 children aged 11-17, focusing on how inflammatory biomarkers and genetic factors relate to the severity of symptoms.
  • By utilizing NIH's symptom science model, the research seeks to develop a risk stratification model, ultimately helping clinicians and educators identify and support children at higher risk for negative long-term health and academic outcomes following a concussion.

Health care transition (HCT) is the process of changing from a pediatric to an adult model of care. Young adult pediatric recipients of liver transplant transferring from pediatric to adult health care services are highly vulnerable and subject to poor long-term outcomes. Barriers to successful transition are multifaceted.

Article Synopsis
  • The study compares 30-day adverse event rates between two surgical procedures for biceps pathology: open biceps tenodesis and biceps tenotomy.
  • Analysis was conducted on data from over 12,000 patients using statistical methods to ensure accuracy, revealing that tenodesis procedures had lower rates of complications, while tenotomy had higher rates of adverse events like sepsis and reoperation.
  • Overall, both procedures are considered safe, but tenodesis is associated with fewer complications and a higher likelihood of being performed as an outpatient procedure.

Article Synopsis
  • Treatment options for partial distal biceps tendon (DBT) ruptures include conservative management (like physical therapy) and surgical intervention, and choosing the right approach can be difficult for patients and doctors.
  • The study hypothesized that while surgical treatment could lead to more complications, it would also result in better strength, range of motion, and patient satisfaction compared to conservative methods.
  • A systematic review of 13 studies involving 290 patients showed that both treatment options yielded good results, with conservative treatment having slightly worse strength outcomes, while surgical patients had higher complication rates and sometimes lower satisfaction.

Xanthoma disseminatum (XD) is a rare, non-Langerhans cell histiocytosis. While treatment is notoriously difficult, 2-chlorodeoxyadenosine (cladribine) has recently emerged as a potential effective therapeutic option. Here, we describe the case of a 65-year-old male with XD who experienced significant cutaneous improvement after cladribine treatment.

The attenuated hepatic clearance of propionate increases cardiac oxidative stress in propionic acidemia.

Propionic acidemia (PA), arising from PCCA or PCCB variants, manifests as life-threatening cardiomyopathy and arrhythmias, with unclear pathophysiology. In this work, propionyl-CoA metabolism in rodent hearts and human pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes was investigated with stable isotope tracing analysis. Surprisingly, gut microbiome-derived propionate rather than the propiogenic amino acids (valine, isoleucine, threonine, and methionine) or odd-chain fatty acids was found to be the primary cardiac propionyl-CoA source.

Fructans are commonly used as dietary fibre supplements for their ability to promote the growth of beneficial gut microbes. However, fructan consumption has been associated with various dosage-dependent side effects. We characterised side effects in an exploratory analysis of a randomised trial in healthy adults ( = 40) who consumed 18 g/day inulin or placebo.

Article Synopsis
  • Malignant phyllodes tumours (PTs) are aggressive tumors with a high risk of returning and spreading, and currently, there are no effective chemotherapy or targeted therapies available for metastatic PTs.
  • A case study highlights a woman in her late 30s with recurrent malignant PT displaying unusual metastases to her hand, referred to as acrometastases.
  • The report stresses the importance of recognizing these atypical metastasis patterns, given the rapid growth of malignant PTs and the lack of treatment options, signifying the need for quick diagnosis and treatment.

Purpose: This project aimed to implement a continuous capnography protocol in the postanesthesia care unit (PACU) for postoperative adult patients who are at high risk for respiratory failure.

Design: A preintervention and postintervention quality improvement design with retrospective chart reviews evaluated patient demographics (age, weight, body mass index [BMI], perioperative fluid intake and output, use of intraoperative positive-end expiratory pressure), length of surgery, average length of PACU stay, incidence of respiratory events, and adherence to a PACU capnography protocol.

Methods: Preimplementation data were collected from retrospective chart reviews over a 3-month period.
