Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) apply massive amounts of untreated waste to nearby farmlands, with severe environmental health impacts of swine CAFOs and proximity to disadvantaged communities well documented in some US regions. Most studies documenting the impacts of CAFOs rely almost exclusively on CAFO locations known from incomplete public records. Poultry CAFOs generate dry waste and operate without federal permits; thus, their environmental justice (EJ) impacts are undocumented.

Background: Cardiovascular disease and cancer share a common risk factor: chronic stress/allostatic load (AL). A 1-point increase in AL is linked to up to a 30% higher risk of major cardiac events (MACE) in patients with prostate cancer. However, AL's role in MACE in breast cancer, lung cancer, or colorectal cancer remains unknown.

  • DAOH (Days Alive Out of Hospital) is a key end point for assessing patient outcomes in atrial fibrillation treatments, but its clinical utility has not been previously explored in trials.
  • The ROCKET AF trial compared the effectiveness of rivaroxaban and warfarin in patients with atrial fibrillation, revealing similar DAOH outcomes for both treatments, indicating no significant benefit of one over the other.
  • Overall, low event rates among participants led to a skewed distribution in DAOH measurements, which may explain the lack of treatment differences observed in the study.

Although several randomized clinical trials have reported the potential benefit of sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 inhibitors (SGLT2i) in reducing blood pressure (BP), whether SGLT2i can reduce incident hypertension is unknown. We analyzed individuals with diabetes who were newly prescribed SGLT2i or dipeptidyl peptidase 4 inhibitors (DPP4i) in a large-scale epidemiological database. The primary outcome was the incidence of hypertension.

Article Synopsis
  • * Residents in extremely hot neighborhoods may face greater risks if adaptation is measured city-wide rather than at the neighborhood level.
  • * Research shows that neighborhood-level acclimatization is crucial, as current studies mix both scales, and more detailed neighborhood data is necessary to accurately assess heat-related health impacts and guide mitigation strategies.
