Extracellular vesicles (EVs) such as microparticles secreted by the cells can be manipulated and used for delivering therapeutic drugs to target and eradicate cancer cells. However, high encapsulation efficiency and mass production of the microparticles remain difficult to achieve. Efficient and targeted delivery to cancer cells is another hurdle to be addressed.

A Meta-analysis of Predicting Disorders of Consciousness After Traumatic Brain Injury by Machine Learning Models.

Objective: This study pursued a meta-analysis to evaluate the predictive accuracy of machine learning (ML) models in determining disorders of consciousness (DOC) among patients with traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Methods: A comprehensive literature search was conducted to identify ML applications in the establishment of a predictive model of DOC after TBI as of August 6, 2023. Two independent reviewers assessed publication eligibility based on predefined criteria.

Human health is seriously endangered by spontaneous intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) and aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH). Because the majority of ICH and aSAH survivors experience disability, increased risk of stroke recurrence, cognitive decline, and systemic vascular disease, ICH and aSAH assume special importance in neurological disease. Early detection and prediction of neurological function and understanding of etiology and correction are the basis of successful treatment.

A retrospective study about association of dynamic systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) with 180-day functional outcome after basal ganglia intracerebral hemorrhage.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine whether SII on different days of admission is associated with severity and 180-day functional outcomes after basal ganglia ICH.

Methods: In this retrospective study, data on baseline CT imaging characteristics, mRS, hematoma volume, and laboratory variables were included. The SII and NLR, LMR, and PLR were calculated from laboratory data collected on admission day, day 1, and days 5-7.

Metastatic malignant melanoma from anorectum presenting as an isolated breast tumor: A case report and literature review.

Rationale: Anorectal malignant melanoma regularly exhibits a biological aggressive behavior which is metastasizing to lung, bone, brain or other organs and tissues early in the course of the disease. Compared with melanoma in the other parts of the body, anorectal malignant melanoma is relatively rare. Metastatic to the breast tissue from anorectal malignant melanoma or from other extra-mammary tumors are very rare.

Neurofilament light chain and S100B serum levels are associated with disease severity and outcome in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage.

Objectives: Serum neurofilament light chain (NfL) is a biomarker for neuroaxonal damage, and S100B is a blood marker for cerebral damage. In the present study, we investigated the relationship between serum NfL and S100B levels, severity, and outcomes in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH).

Methods: We prospectively recruited aSAH patients and healthy controls between January 2016 and January 2021.

Background: An influx of systematic reviews (SRs) of programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) and programmed death ligand-1 (PD-L1) checkpoint inhibitors in cancer treatment with or without meta-analysis and with different methodological quality and inconsistent results have been published, confusing clinical decision making. The aim of this study was to comprehensively evaluate and summarize the current evidence of PD-(L)1 inhibitors in the treatment of cancer.

Methods: A comprehensive search of SRs, which included meta-analyses of PD-(L)1 inhibitors on cancer, was performed on eight databases with a cutoff date of 1 January 2022.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the potential predictive significance of pretreatment prognostic nutritional index (PNI) in intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) resistant Kawasaki disease (KD). The PNI, neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were analyzed in 1257 eligible patients with KD. Receiver operating curve analysis was used to explore the prediction accuracy for IVIG-resistant KD.

Bioactive mediators, cytokines, and chemokines have an important role in regulating and optimizing the synergistic action of materials, cells, and cellular microenvironments for tissue engineering. RADA self-assembling peptide hydrogels have been proved to have an excellent ability to promote cell proliferation, wound healing, tissue repair, and drug delivery. Here, we report that D-RADA16 and L-RADA16-RGD self-assembling peptides can form stable second structure and hydrogel scaffolds, affording the slow release of growth factor (transforming growth factor cytokine-beta 1 [TGF-beta 1]).

Serum B-cell activating factor predicts prognosis in nasal type, extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma.

B-cell activating factor (BAFF) plays important roles in a variety of lymphoid malignancies. Compared with healthy adults, patients with non-Hodgkin lymphoma had higher level of serum BAFF, and it corresponded with disease severity, response for therapy and clinical outcome. Latent membrane protein 1 (LMP1) encoded by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) which is a known agent of nasal, extranodal NK/T cell lymphoma (ENKTCL) can switch the BAFF activating promoter leading to higher expression of BAFF in EBV-related tumor cells.

Comparison of clinical outcomes after thoracoscopic sublobectomy versus lobectomy for Stage I nonsmall cell lung cancer: A meta-analysis.

Background: Although lobectomy has long been considered the standard procedure for Stage I nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC), the selection of sublobectomy for Stage I NSCLC remains controversial. Amidst growing enthusiasm for minimally invasive surgery, the comparison of clinical outcomes after thoracoscopic sublobectomy versus thoracoscopic lobectomy may be of immense value.

Objective: The present study aimed to compare the overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) outcomes of patients who underwent thoracoscopic sublobectomy with those who underwent thoracoscopic lobectomy for Stage I NSCLC.
