Although guidelines strongly recommend low levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS), these goals are not achieved in many patients. We present expert recommendations for the in-hospital and post-discharge management of lipid-lowering therapy in ACS patients in Türkiye. A group of expert cardiologists comprising members of the Turkish Society of Cardiology and leading lipidologists who have all worked in national cardiology lipid working groups for at least 4 years, considered the optimal approach to lipid management in ACS patients in Türkiye, taking into account Turkish healthcare infrastructure and issues from real-world practice.

Article Synopsis
  • The Intermountain Risk Score (IMRS) is a simple and inexpensive tool that predicts mortality using patient demographics and basic lab results, specifically for those with acute pulmonary edema.
  • In a study of 371 patients, the IMRS effectively stratified patients into low, moderate, and high-risk groups based on their likelihood of dying within one month or one year of hospitalization.
  • Results showed that a cutoff IMRS value of 15.5 significantly predicted mortality risk, with higher scores correlating to greater risk of death, confirming the IMRS as a reliable predictor in this medical context.

Introduction: Prolonged seizures cause cytotoxic edema and increase intracranial pressure. Optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD) and its ratio to eyeball transverse diameter (ONSD/ETD) offer a noninvasive method for monitoring intracranial pressure changes. We calculated the ONSD and ONSD/ETD ratio of postictal children using computed tomography and evaluated the relationship between those values and seizure duration.

5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidin (Decitabine) increases cancer-testis antigen expression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma and modifies immune checkpoint expression, especially in CD39-positive CD8 and CD4 T cells.

Neoplasia

January 2025

Head and Neck Cancer Center of the Comprehensive Cancer Center, Department of Otorhinolaryngology and Head & Neck Surgery, Ulm University Medical Center, Germany; Ulm University Medical Faculty, Core Facility Immune Monitoring, Ulm, Germany. Electronic address:

Failure of immunotherapy in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) patients represents an unmet need to augment leverage of adaptive immunity. Immunogenic cancer-testis antigen (CTA) expression as well as lymphocyte differentiation and function are regulated by DNA methylation. Therefore, epigenetic therapy via inhibition of DNA-Methyltransferases by 5-Aza-2'-deoxycytidine (DAC) serves a promising adjuvant in immunotherapy.

The circumsporozoite protein (CSP) is one of the most studied proteins of the malaria parasite. It is the target of the only licensed malaria vaccines and is essential for sporozoite formation and infectivity. Yet, the mechanisms by which CSP functions and its interactions with other proteins are only beginning to be understood.

  • * Tension gastrothorax can mimic other serious conditions like tension pneumothorax or pleural effusion, making it challenging to diagnose correctly based on initial X-rays.
  • * Treatment involves reducing the pressure from the stomach by inserting a nasogastric catheter or, if that fails, using needle aspiration to prevent mediastinal shift, which can cause respiratory distress and cardiac complications.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore gender differences in the phenotypical expression of Behçet's disease (BD) using data from the International AIDA Network Registry, focusing on damage index, disease manifestations, and cardiovascular risk.
  • A total of 1024 patients (567 males and 457 females) were examined, revealing that males had a significantly higher overall damage index and more frequent occurrences of uveitis and vascular involvement, while females showed higher instances of arthralgia, arthritis, and CNS involvement.
  • Key factors associated with major organ involvement included male gender, treatment with biologic agents, origin from endemic regions, and longer disease duration, indicating a more severe course of BD in males compared to females.
