Survey of legislative frameworks and national recommendations governing paediatric maintenance haemodialysis in Europe.

Background: The application of international recommendations for paediatric maintenance haemodialysis (HD) could be strengthened by national laws or written recommendations. Our aim was therefore to describe the national rules governing paediatric maintenance HD in European countries.

Methods: A national representative, approved by the president of each paediatric nephrology society, was contacted in all 42 European countries to complete two online questionnaires.

Machine learning for refining interpretation of magnetic resonance imaging scans in the management of multiple sclerosis: a narrative review.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease of the brain and spinal cord with both inflammatory and neurodegenerative features. Although advances in imaging techniques, particularly magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), have improved the process of diagnosis, its cause is unknown, a cure remains elusive and the evidence base to guide treatment is lacking. Computational techniques like machine learning (ML) have started to be used to understand MS.

Association Between Specialty-Specific Physician Salaries and Percentage of Women in the Workforce.

Purpose: Several studies have demonstrated that female physicians within specific specialties are compensated less than their male counterparts. Academic institutions seek to address this using Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) data for benchmarking and starting salary standardization. However, few studies address whether there is an association between percentage of women across specialties and mean salary for each specialty.

The suitability of surgical interventions for this demographic is contentious due to underrepresentation during surgery. This study examines the practicality of utilizing Da Vinci surgery for rectal cancer patients who are 70 years and older.

Sciatic nerve analysis in thyroid hormone transporter Mct8 and Oatp1c1 knockout mice.

Objective: Mutations in the thyroid hormone (TH) transporter monocarboxylate transporter 8 (MCT8) cause Allan-Herndon-Dudley syndrome (AHDS), a severe form of psychomotor retardation with muscle hypoplasia and spastic paraplegia as key symptoms. These abnormalities have been attributed to an impaired TH transport across brain barriers and into neural cells thereby affecting brain development and function. Likewise, Mct8/Oatp1c1 (organic anion transporting polypeptide 1c1) double knockout (M/Odko) mice, a well-established murine AHDS model, display a strongly reduced TH passage into the brain as well as locomotor abnormalities.

Reimagining psychosis prevention: responding to the accessibility issues of At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) services through a selective public health approach.

At-Risk Mental State (ARMS) services aim to prevent the onset of first-episode psychosis (FEP) in those with specific clinical or genetic risk markers. In England, ARMS services are currently expanding, but the accessibility of this preventative approach remains questionable, especially for a subgroup of FEP patients and those from specific ethnic minority communities. This commentary outlines the key debates about why a complimentary approach to psychosis prevention is necessary, and gives details for an innovative public health strategy, drawing on existing research and health prevention theory.

Annual Survey of State and Territorial Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion Capacity and Organizational Development Needs-United States, 2023.

Objective: The National Association of Chronic Disease Directors (NACDD) is a nonprofit organization that supports state and territorial chronic disease prevention and health promotion efforts through capacity building and technical assistance. Each year, NACDD surveys health department leaders who oversee chronic disease prevention and health promotion (hereafter, Chronic Disease Directors). We have previously used the annual survey results to inform strategic planning and resource allocation but have not historically published key findings in the peer-reviewed literature.

The Influence of Hip Position on Neck Kinematics and Muscle Activity in Healthy and Non-Specific Neck Pain Subjects.

Neck pain is a widespread problem in society with many variables influencing its cause. The angle of the hip may influence the kinematics of the neck in addition to the myoelectrical activation of the surrounding musculature that contributes to the development of neck pain. The purpose of this study was to investigate the changes in spinal inclination angles and muscle activity in the neck using a 10 deg wedge in a forward slope, neutral and rear slope seated position.

Worldwide Policy, Surveillance, and Research on Physical Education and School-Based Physical Activity: The Global Observatory for Physical Education (GoPE!) Conceptual Framework and Research Protocol.

Introduction: The Global Observatory for Physical Education (GoPE!) builds on the Global Observatory for Physical Activity (GoPA!) to address gaps in surveillance, policy, and research on physical education (PE) and activity (PA). GoPE! is a worldwide surveillance system of quality PE and school-based PA that informs policy and interventions and allows comparative analysis so that each country and region can check their status and progress. This paper presents GoPE!'s conceptual framework and describes the research protocol as a cross-continental and evidence-based surveillance system.

Assessment of Risk Factors Leading to Amputation Among Diabetic Septic Foot Patients in Khartoum, Sudan.

Introduction  Diabetes is a rapidly growing global health concern, with the World Health Organization (WHO) estimating that 300 million adults will have diabetes by 2025. This chronic condition is associated with complications, including nephropathy, retinopathy, neuropathy, cardiovascular disease, and diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs), which can lead to amputation. Diabetic septic foot (DSF), a severe form of diabetic foot disease, is defined by the WHO as the presence of infection, ulceration, or tissue destruction in the lower limb, often accompanied by neurological abnormalities, peripheral vascular disease, and metabolic complications of diabetes.

The stability of RNA is a critical factor in determining its functionality and degradation in the cell. In recent years, it has been shown that the stability of RNA depends on a complex interaction of external and internal factors. External conditions, such as temperature fluctuations, the level of acidity of the environment, the presence of various substances and ions, as well as the effects of oxidative stress, can change the structure of RNA and affect its stability.

Identifying the Black Country's Top Mental Health Research Priorities Using a Collaborative Workshop Approach: Community Connexions.

The Black Country (BC) is an area of the United Kingdom covering Dudley, Sandwell, Walsall, and Wolverhampton. The area is ethnically, culturally and religiously diverse. One-fifth of the total population is in the lowest socioeconomic quintile, with an uneven distribution of wealth.

Genomic Diversity and Potential Transmission and Persistence of Salmonella in the Cambodian Vegetable Supply Chain.

S. enterica isolates (n = 78) obtained from the vegetable supply chain (farms, distribution centers, markets) in two Cambodian provinces (Siem Reap, Battambang) were sequenced and analyzed. In silico identification of serotypes and detection of antimicrobial resistance genes was performed using SISTR and ABRicate, respectively.

Achievements, priorities and strategies in pediatric nephrology in Europe: need for unifying approaches or acceptance of differences?

Background: There is a lack of information on the current healthcare systems for children with kidney diseases across Europe. The aim of this study was to explore the different national approaches to the organization and delivery of pediatric nephrology services within Europe.

Methods: In 2020, the European society for Paediatric Nephrology (ESPN) conducted a cross-sectional survey to identify the existing pediatric nephrology healthcare systems in 48 European countries covering a population of more than 200 million children.

Assembly of oleosin during efficient extraction: Altering the sequence of defatting solvents.

During the extraction of membrane proteins from oil bodies (OBs), organic solvents dissolve the lipid core and precipitate proteins through solvent stress. Here the effects of solvent type and defatting sequence on the composition and structure of membrane proteins were investigated SDS-PAGE, FTIR, and SEM-EDS. High purity oleosin (86 %) was obtained by treatment first with a Floch solution and then with cold acetone and petroleum ether after twice washing OBs with urea.

Spectral optimization of supercontinuum shaping using metaheuristic algorithms, a comparative study.

Supercontinuum generation in optical fiber involves complex nonlinear dynamics, making optimization challenging, and typically relying on trial-and-error or extensive numerical simulations. Machine learning and metaheuristic algorithms offer more efficient optimization approaches. We report here an experimental study of supercontinuum spectral shaping by tuning the phase of the input pulses, different optimization approaches including a genetic algorithm, particle swarm optimizer, and simulated annealing.

Artificial intelligence-based cardiovascular/stroke risk stratification in women affected by autoimmune disorders: a narrative survey.

Women are disproportionately affected by chronic autoimmune diseases (AD) like systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and Sjögren's syndrome. Traditional evaluations often underestimate the associated cardiovascular disease (CVD) and stroke risk in women having AD. Vitamin D deficiency increases susceptibility to these conditions.

Left Ventricular Thrombus With Silent Myocardial Infarction in a Patient With Factor V Leiden Mutation and High Factor VIII Levels: A Case Report.

Silent myocardial infarction (SMI) is a type of myocardial infarction that occurs in the absence of, or with, minimal symptoms, often leading to a delay in medical treatment. There is a lack of data regarding the incidence and/or prevalence of a left ventricular (LV) thrombus in those who have had an SMI, due to the rarity of such cases. We describe a case of an SMI with LV thrombus in an otherwise healthy young man, whose first presentation was with stroke-type symptoms and who was also later found to have a Factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation and raised factor VIII levels.

Pain Management in Fibromyalgia: Evaluating the Roles of Pregabalin, Duloxetine, and Milnacipran.

Introduction Fibromyalgia is a chronic pain disorder characterized by widespread pain, fatigue, and sleep disturbances. The purpose of this study was to compare how well duloxetine, pregabalin, and milnacipran worked for fibromyalgia patients in terms of pain management, quality of life, and sleep quality. Methodology A prospective cohort research study with 193 fibromyalgia patients was carried out at the Abbas Institute of Medical Sciences, Muzaffarabad, Pakistan.

Role of Strong Opioids in an Effective Discharge for Lower-Limb Large Joint Arthroplasty Patients: A Patient-Based Analysis.

Background/objective: Adequate postoperative analgesics are an essential element in the recovery and rehabilitation of large joint lower-limb arthroplasty patients in their acute postoperative phase. In this study, we will establish that strong opioids like morphine should be included as postoperative analgesics to improve patient satisfaction.  Material: This retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted in the Arthroplasty Ward, Trauma, and Orthopaedics Department in a district general hospital of the United Kingdom.
