Polymorphisms in LDB3 gene can cause various forms of cardiomyopathy and myofibrillar myopathy 4 (MM4). Patient described in this study presented with a hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) and distal myopathy suggestive of myofibrillar myopathy 4. Genetic analysis using the TruSight Cardio Sequencing Kit (Illumina) revealed suspected LDB3 variant (c.

The aim of this study was to compare the number of newly diagnosed, histopathologically confirmed cases of urothelial carcinoma before and during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Zagreb University Hospital Center. We retroactively collected and analyzed 300 histopathologically confirmed urothelial carcinoma between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2020, at the Department of Pathology and Cytology, Zagreb University Hospital Center. Our results showed that during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a statistically significant decrease (p=0.

The aim of this study was to compare the number of biopsy and surgical procedures on prostate, as well as the number of newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed cases of prostate cancer during the COVID-19 pandemic at Zagreb University Hospital Center (UHC). We retrospectively collected and processed a total of 1344 histopathologic findings of the prostate at the Zagreb UHC. Our results show that during the COVID-19 pandemic, there was a statistically significant decrease in the absolute number of biopsy and surgical procedures on prostate at Zagreb UHC, and so was the number of newly diagnosed, histologically confirmed cases of prostate cancer.

Heart failure (HF) with mid-range or mildly reduced ejection fraction (HFmrEF) is a separate clinical entity in the HF spectrum, with a left ventricular ejection fraction ranging from 40 to 49%. While sodium glucose co-transporter 2 inhibitors have become the cornerstone therapy for the entire HF spectrum, there are a few clinical trials of HFmrEF. This prospective observational study was conducted at Dubrava University Hospital, Zagreb, Croatia, from May 2021 to October 2023.

Transfer of care is a critical point for patient safety and requires an optimal care transfer model in order to ensure safe pharmacotherapy transfer. Polypharmacy among elderly is associated with adverse health consequences such as hospital readmissions. Hospital readmissions represent priorities in health care research and are one of the measures for assessing patient safety.

Introduction: In children, congenital heart defects represent the primary cause of increased serum troponin I. The elimination process of cardiac troponin I from the bloodstream and the factors influencing this process remain unknown. The objective of this study was to explore the role of troponin I as an indicator of cardiac damage in children both in serum and urine, a concept previously investigated in adults.

: It has recently been shown that cardiac-specific troponin I concentrations in first morning urine samples can be measured with commercially available tests. Due to their accumulation in the first morning urine, scientific papers indicate a potential predictive value for cardiovascular diseases. Therefore, the aim of this study was to compare the concentration of cardiac troponin I in the first morning urine in patients with severe aortic stenosis and the healthy population.

The disruption of antiviral sensors and the evasion of immune defences by various tactics are hallmarks of EBV infection. One of the EBV latent gene products, LMP1, was shown to induce the activation of signalling pathways, such as NF-κB, MAPK (JNK, ERK1/2, p38), JAK/STAT and PI3K/Akt, via three subdomains of its C-terminal domain, regulating the expression of several cytokines responsible for modulation of the immune response and therefore promoting viral persistence. The aim of this review is to summarise the current knowledge on the EBV-mediated induction of immunomodulatory molecules by the activation of signal transduction pathways with a particular focus on LMP1-mediated mechanisms.

Background: Frostbite is a severe injury characterized by tissue damage due to exposure to freezing temperatures. It often necessitates prompt medical intervention to prevent further complications such as necrosis and amputation. This case report explores the successful use of bilateral anterolateral thigh (ALT) free flaps for feet salvage in a 19-year-old male refugee from Gambia who suffered severe frostbite injuries.

Background And Aim: There are few prospective data on the prognostic value of normal admission low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) in statin-naïve patients with acute coronary syndromes (ACS) who are treated with a preemptive invasive strategy. We aimed to analyze the proportion of patients with normal LDL-C at admission for ACS in our practice, and their characteristics and clinical outcomes in comparison to patients with high admission LDL-C.
Patients And Methods: Two institutions' prospective registries of patients with confirmed ACS from Jan 2017 to Jan 2023 were used to identify 1579 statin-naïve patients with no history of prior coronary artery disease (CAD), and with available LDL-C admission results, relevant clinical and procedural data, and short- and long-term follow-up data.

Background: The decision to accept or discard the increasingly rare and marginal brain-dead donor kidneys in Eurotransplant (ET) countries has to be made without solid evidence. Thus, we developed and validated flexible clinicopathological scores called 2-Step Scores for the prognosis of delayed graft function (DGF) and 1-year death-censored transplant loss (1y-tl) reflecting the current practice of six ET countries including Croatia and Belgium.
Methods: The training set was n = 620 for DGF and n = 711 for 1y-tl, with validation sets n = 158 and n = 162, respectively.

Background: Data from patients with post-ablative dural defects reconstructed using a free temporalis muscle fascia graft (FTFG) after resection of anterior or central skull base tumors were retrospectively analyzed.
Methods: The primary predictor and outcome variables were the reconstructive methods for dural repair and postoperative cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage rate, respectively.
Results: Eighty patients were included, and 94 postoperative dural reconstructions were performed using FTFG.

Background: Where routine prophylactic antibiotics have been adopted following cataract surgery, rates of endophthalmitis have been decreasing. Intracameral and topical antibiotics are currently used to prevent endophthalmitis after cataract surgery. When applying topical antibiotics, there are different recommendations on the frequency and duration of therapy.

Introduction: Lacrimal gland prolapse (LGP) is a term used to describe a benign, anterior displacement of the lacrimal gland. If this condition is not properly addressed during upper blepharoplasty, the aesthetic and functional results are less than optimal. This study aimed to report the surgical outcomes of upper blepharoplasty combined with dacryoadenopexy in patients with LGP.

Currently, enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols are multimodal perioperative care pathways with the goal to achieve early patient recovery after surgery with minimal postoperative complications. According to studies, opioid free general anesthesia has many perioperative benefits and should be part of the ERAS protocols in specific surgical and patient indications. Opioid free general anesthesia is a multimodal balanced technique that is based on the concept that opioids are not used preoperatively or intraoperatively until the patient has aroused.

Gliomas are notably challenging to treat due to their invasive nature and resistance to conventional therapies. The ABCG2 protein has attracted attention for its role in multidrug resistance, complicating treatment effectiveness. This study scrutinized the relationship between ABCG2 expression and glioma grade and the role of ABCG2 in the process of glioma progression, aiming to evaluate ABCG2 expression as a predictive factor of tumor progression and patient survival.
