November 2023

Peninsula Dental School, Plymouth University, Plymouth, UK. Electronic address:

This narrative review summarises "alternative" or "natural" over-the-counter (OTC) mouthwashes not covered elsewhere in this supplement and newly emerging products, as potential mouthwashes of the future. The "natural" mouthwashes reviewed include saltwater, baking soda, coconut oil, charcoal, propolis, seaweeds, and probiotics. Other than essential oils, it is apparent that their clinical effectiveness is still under debate, but there is some evidence to suggest that propolis reduces plaque and gingivitis.

The role that tobacco consumption plays in the etiology of oral cancer carcinogenesis, and of alcohol consumption acting as a co-factor, have been well established. However, in recent years, the contribution of alcohol consumption alone to oral cancer has been proposed. In fact, a high percentage of patients who develop oral cancer have both habits (tobacco and alcohol consumption), and other small patient groups only consume alcohol or do not have any other identifiable bad habits.

Rationale for restoration of carious primary teeth: a review.

Eur Arch Paediatr Dent

December 2012

Dept. of Public and Child Dental Health, Dublin Dental School and Hospital, Dublin 2, Ireland.

Background: The literature regarding dental and systemic effects of Early Childhood Caries (ECC), consequences of leaving carious primary teeth untreated, benefits of appropriate treatment, and concerns regarding dental treatment of young children and the potential for dental anxiety, is reviewed. ECC has consequences, affecting both the child's dental health and his/her general health. This paper reviews the literature regarding ECC and its consequences (pain, sepsis, space loss, disruption to quality of life, failure to thrive, effects on intellectual development, greater risk of new carious lesions in both primary and permanent dentitions, higher incidence of hospitalisation and emergency visits, and increased treatment costs and time).
