Recently, studies have reported that increased level of red cell distribution width (RDW) is associated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT). We are aiming to evaluate the validity of RDW in DVT in patients undergoing total joint arthroplasty (TJA). A total of 110 patients (55 patients with DVT and 55 control individuals undergoing TJA) were included in this retrospective cross-sectional study.

Introduction: Mechanical alignment deviation after total knee arthroplasty is a major reason for early loosening of the prosthesis. Achieving optimum cement penetration during fixation of the femoral and tibial component is an essential step in performing a successful total knee arthroplasty. Bone cement is used to solidify the bone and prosthesis.

FOXP3 is known as a master control of regulatory T cells with recently studies indicating its expression in several tumor cells. In order to study the precise role of FOXP3 in cholangiocarcinoma, FOXP3 was knocked down in cholangiocarcinoma cell lines. Down regulation of FOXP3 inhibits tumor cell invasion by reducing the quantity of MMP-9 and MMP-2.

Insulin-like growth factor 1 receptor (IGF1R) is a transmembrane receptor that is activated by insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) and by a related hormone called IGF-2. It belongs to the large class of tyrosine kinase receptors and plays an important role in colorectal cancer etiology and progression. In this study, we used bioinformatic analyses to search for miRNAs that potentially target IGF1R.

Electronic address:

In this study, we determined the effects of transforming growth factor-beta (TGF-β) and Wnt/β-catenin signaling on myofibroblast differentiation of NIH/3T3 fibroblasts in vitro and evaluated the therapeutic efficacy of NSC668036 in bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis murine model. In vitro study, NSC668036, a small organic inhibitor of the PDZ domain in Dvl, suppressed β-catenin-driven gene transcription and abolished TGF-β1-induced migration, expression of collagen I and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in fibroblasts. In vivo study, we found that NSC668036 significantly suppressed accumulation of collagen I, α-SMA, and TGF-β1 but increased the expression of CK19, Occludin and E-cadherin that can inhibit pulmonary fibrogenesis.

Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) with malignant pleural effusion (MPE) have a short median survival time and increased regulatory T cells (Treg). However, it is unclear whether some specific factors in MPE are involved in Treg recruitment in the progression of NSCLC. Here, we found that Treg population was increased in MPE and inversely correlated with patient survival (P < 0.

Background: Small biopsy samples are generally considered inconclusive for bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP) diagnosis despite their potential to reveal organizing pneumonia (OP) pathologically, necessitating risky invasive tissue biopsy during surgery for reliable confirmation.

Objective: OP by CT-guided lung biopsy was to evaluate the role in the diagnosis of BOOP.

Methods: A retrospective review of 134 cases with the OP feature in the CT-guided lung biopsy samples between 2004 and 2011 at a single center was conducted.

Deep vein thrombosis is one of the common complications of orthopedic surgery, and pulmonary embolism which is one of its lethal complications can lead to mortality. Numerous efforts have been made to identify reliable and predictive biomarkers to detect the early signs of deep vein thrombosis. These studies have, however, not delivered any more informative candidates than the D-dimer that have been available.

miR-203 suppresses the proliferation and migration and promotes the apoptosis of lung cancer cells by targeting SRC.

PLoS One

November 2015

Jiangsu Engineering Research Center for microRNA Biology and Biotechnology, State Key Laboratory of Pharmaceutical Biotechnology, School of Life Sciences, Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

SRC, also known as proto-oncogene c-Src, is a non-receptor tyrosine kinase that plays an important role in cancer progression by promoting survival, angiogenesis, proliferation, and invasion pathways. In this study, we found that SRC protein levels were consistently upregulated in lung cancer tissues, but that SRC mRNA levels varied randomly, suggesting that a post-transcriptional mechanism was involved in SRC regulation. Because microRNAs (miRNAs) are powerful post-transcriptional regulators of gene expression, we used bioinformatic analyses to search for miRNAs that potentially target SRC.

Temozolomide (TMZ), a DNA alkylating agent, represents the most important chemotherapeutic option for the treatment of glioblastoma in the clinic. Despite its frequent use, the therapeutic efficacy of TMZ remains very limited due to its frequent resistance in glioblastoma. Previous evidence suggested that curcumin (CUM), an ingredient of the Indian spice turmeric, is able to sensitize glioblastoma to TMZ treatment.

Background: The leptin -2548G/A (rs7799039) gene polymorphism has been implicated in susceptibility to antipsychotic-induced weight gain (AIWG), but study results are still controversial. The present meta-analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between the leptin -2548G/A gene polymorphism and AIWG.

Methods: Electronic databases were searched for eligible articles in English and Chinese and seven separate studies on the association of the leptin -2548G/A gene polymorphism with AIWG were analyzed.

The involvement of Axl kinase in non-small cell lung cancer's (NSCLC) acquired resistance to tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs) gefitinib or erlotinib has been identified recently, but the mechanism by which Axl contributes to TKI resistance is largely unknown. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) repress gene expression and their critical role in tumorigenesis has been implicated. To investigate the role of miRNAs in the Axl-mediated acquired gefitinib resistance, we examined the Axl-mediated miRNA changes in gefitinib-resistant lung cancers.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a common developmental hip disorder, which ranges from mild acetabulum malformation to irreducible hip dislocation. A previous study suggested a significant association of pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A2 (PAPPA2) with DDH susceptibility in Chinese Han population. But with the consideration of the sample size, the association was still debatable.
