Background: Oxygen-rich breathing mixtures up to 100% are used in some underwater diving operations for several reasons. Breathing elevated oxygen partial pressures (PO) increases the risk of developing central nervous system oxygen toxicity (CNS-OT) which could impair performance or result in a seizure and subsequent drowning. We aimed to study the dynamics of the electrodermal activity (EDA) and heart rate (HR) while breathing elevated PO in the hyperbaric environment (HBO) as a possible means to predict impending CNS-OT.

The study aims to investigate parent's perceptions regarding their children's participation in swimming courses, considering various variables. Within the scope of the study, the "Reasons for Parents Sending Their Children to Swimming Sports Scale," consisting of 21 questions, was utilized. This Scale evaluates three sub-factors: the motivations behind parents sending their children to swimming sports, the impact of swimming sports on their children, and the level of satisfaction with swimming sports.

Objectives Surgical care for traumatic injuries remains a major concern to public health in sub-Saharan Africa. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development recognizes rising inequalities in global health. The objectives of this study were to compare the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 estimates on injury mortality and disability across sub-Saharan sub-regions by cause-of-injury category.

The present study sought to examine the gaze behaviours exhibited by lifeguards with different levels of experience while performing a task focused on detecting drowning incidents across extended periods. The results indicated a gradual decline in detection performance over time, regardless of the lifeguards' levels of experience. Analysis of the participants' gaze behaviours unveiled that this decline was associated with alterations in both the number and duration of fixations.

It can not only cause immediate death but can also inflict severe complications, such as acute lung injury (ALI), which greatly increases the mortality rate. Thus, investigating the mechanism of SWD induced lung injury and discovering effective treatments is of great importance.

Purpose: As a globally popular physical activity, swimming also presents challenges due to its inherent aquatic risks. Therefore, the cultivation of swimming competence emerges as a crucial strategy in preventing drowning incidents. This study aimed to develop and validate the Swimming Competence Assessment Scale in College Students (SCAS) to address the gap in structured swimming proficiency evaluation, essential for drowning prevention and water safety education.

Drowning incidents present significant challenges for forensic investigators in determining the exact site of occurrence. Traditional forensic methods often rely on physical evidence and circumstantial clues, but the emerging field of forensic microbiology offers a promising avenue for enhancing precision and reliability in site inference. Our study investigates the application of microbiome analysis in inferring drowning sites, focusing on microbial diversity in water samples and lung tissues of drowned animals from different sites in the Northwest River.

Problem/condition: Splash pads are recreational interactive water venues that spray or jet water on users. Splash pads are intended for children aged <5 years and designed so that water typically does not collect in areas accessible to users, thereby minimizing the risk for drowning. Splash pads were first found to be associated with waterborne disease outbreaks in 1997.

Objectives: To propose a novel forensic diatom examination method, namely the protease-hydrogen peroxide (PHP) digestion method, and to explore its potential application in forensic practice.
Methods: The PHP digestion method was applied to process lung tissues and compared with the traditional nitric acid digestion method in terms of diatom quantity, recovery rate, proportion of diatom fragments, and recovery efficiency of different diatom genera.
Results: The PHP digestion method showed higher diatom quantity, recovery rate, and proportion of diatom fragments compared to the traditional nitric acid digestion method with statistical significance.
Objective: Drowning is a leading cause of injury-related death in the pediatric and adolescent population. This epidemiologic study describes the trends in emergency department (ED) visits for pediatric drowning injury in North Carolina and the impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on incidence rate.
Methods: Data were obtained using the North Carolina Disease Event Tracking and Epidemiologic Collection Tool, a public health surveillance system, to identify ED visits for drowning injury from 2016 to 2022.
Aiming at the problem of overbrightness of the target simulator background for LED backlight panel illumination, a 5° aperture angle-matched collimated illumination method for the target simulator is proposed based on the study of the dark-state leakage of the LCD display device and the scattered stray light of the system. After simulation analysis the method can make the display contrast increase by 3.1 times and solve the problem of dark targets being drowned by the background bright light, which exists in the LED illumination target simulator.

Background: Despite declining over the past three decades, unintentional drownings still account for an estimated 236 000 annual deaths worldwide. Susceptibility persists amongst demographic groups and is influenced by sex, age, and socio-economic status, emphasizing the need for targeted interventions. Due to rapidly evolving population dynamics, particularly within Europe, there is a further responsibility to understand the impact of ethnicity on the risks of drowning to guide prevention.

The diatom test is one of the methods used to diagnose drowning in forensic autopsies. Metagenomic diatom analysis may reveal where a drowning occurred. We evaluated whether metagenomic diatom analysis could be used to infer waters, watersheds, and geographic locations using 166 water samples from 64 locations (freshwater: 55; seawater: 9).
