Background: Facility HIV self-testing (HIVST) in outpatient departments can dramatically increase testing among adult outpatients. However, it is still unclear why populations opt out of facility HIVST and reasons for opt outing. Using data from a parent facility HIVST trial, we sought to understand individual characteristics associated with opting out of facility HIVST and reported reasons for not testing.

Indocyanine green (ICG) is a water-soluble molecule that emits fluorescence in the near-infrared light spectrum. Due to its fluorescence properties, safety profile, and cost-effectiveness, ICG is used in minimally invasive surgery, enabling real-time visualization of structures during the operation. Until recently, its use was mainly limited to robotic surgery, which required specific technological setups to visualize the fluorescence.

Article Synopsis
  • Legacy PFAS like PFOS and PFOA are being replaced by alternatives such as GenX, which are thought to be less toxic and bioaccumulative.
  • This study investigates the impact of PFAS on gray treefrog tadpoles and finds that exposure during the larval stage affects growth even after metamorphosis.
  • Interestingly, GenX showed more significant impacts on terrestrial performance than PFOA, indicating a need for further research on how PFAS interacts with environmental stressors like pathogens.

Background: Low-cost, scalable strategies are necessary to reach the UNAIDS 2030 target of ending HIV as a public health threat. Use of treatment partners, informal caregivers selected by people living with HIV to support antiretroviral therapy adherence, is one such strategy that is included in many countries' HIV guidelines, including Botswana, a country with high HIV prevalence.

Method: From June 2021 to June 2022, we pilot tested a clinic-based treatment partner intervention ("Mopati"), including standardized language for providers to guide patients on treatment partner selection and workshops to train treatment partners on providing non-directive support to patients using a non-confrontational, non-judgmental approach.

Despite widespread availability of life-saving antiretroviral therapy (ART) in sub-Saharan Africa, AIDS remains one of the leading causes of death among adolescents living with HIV (ALHIV) in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this article was to review the state of the science regarding interventions to improve ART adherence and/or HIV care retention among ALHIV throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The primary aim of this review was to describe the impact of peer support interventions in improving treatment outcomes (i.

J Addict Med

November 2023

From the Department of Psychology, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA (LRM, LAR); Los Angeles County Department of Public Health, Los Angeles, CA (BH); Friends Research Institute, Cerritos, CA (BH, TCF, LR, BL, NM, TD); Los Angeles County Department of Health Services, Los Angeles, CA (TCF, HKB, SH); Department of Internal Medicine, Charles R. Drew University, Los Angeles, CA (TCF, MLL); Department of Biostatistics, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA (MLL); Brain Research Institute, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA (LAR); and Department of Psychiatry and Biobehavioral Sciences, University of California, Los Angeles, Los Angeles, CA (LAR).

Objectives: Although public efforts to reduce tobacco use have been successful, millions of US adults currently smoke tobacco. Reducing the public health burden of tobacco use disorder (TUD) and eliminating disparities experienced by underresourced communities requires increased accessibility to services. The goal of this study was to assess whether prescriptions for evidence-based medications for tobacco treatment showed steeper growth rates among community health clinics providing specialty TUD services as compared with treatment as usual.

The lipolysis inhibitor acipimox reverses the cardiac phenotype induced by electronic cigarettes.

Sci Rep

October 2023

Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism and Molecular Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science, 1731 E. 120th Street, Los Angeles, CA, 90059, USA.

Electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) are a prevalent alternative to conventional nicotine cigarettes among smokers and people who have never smoked. Increased concentrations of serum free fatty acids (FFAs) are crucial in generating lipotoxicity. We studied the effects of acipimox, an antilipolytic drug, on e-cigarette-induced cardiac dysfunction.

Pass/fail (P/F) grading has emerged as an alternative to tiered clerkship grading. Systematically evaluating existing literature and surveying program directors (PD) perspectives on these consequential changes can guide educators in addressing inequalities in academia and students aiming to improve their residency applications. In our survey, a total of 1578 unique PD responses (63.

Objectives: Hemimegalencephaly (HME) is a rare congenital brain malformation presenting predominantly with drug-resistant epilepsy. Hemispheric disconnective surgery is the mainstay of treatment; however, little is known about how postoperative outcomes compare across techniques. Thus we present the largest single-center cohort of patients with HME who underwent epilepsy surgery and characterize outcomes.

Black individuals in the United States are less likely to use medication to prevent HIV (pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP) than White individuals and are significantly more likely to receive a new HIV diagnosis. Because of America's long history of unethical medical and research practices and ongoing prejudice and bias, Black Americans have mistrust towards the medical community. This distrust, along with the social determinants of health, leads to low participation in health care.

Regulome-wide association study identifies genetically driven accessible regions associated with pancreatic cancer risk.

Int J Cancer

February 2024

Cancer Epidemiology Division, Population Sciences in the Pacific Program, University of Hawaii Cancer Center, University of Hawaii at Manoa, Honolulu, Hawaii, USA.

Genome-wide association studies (GWAS) have identified two dozen genetic variants that are associated with the risk of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC), a deadly malignancy. However, a majority of these variants are located in noncoding regions of the genome, which limits the translation of GWAS findings into clinical applications. The regulome-wide association study (RWAS) is a recently developed method for identifying TF binding-induced accessibility regions for diseases.

We explored whether siblings can be engaged in PrEP promotion. We used the Information-Motivation-Behavior model to develop and conduct surveys and dyadic interviews with Latino men who have sex with men (LMSM) and their siblings (n = 31) and three sibling-only focus groups (n = 20). For LMSM, only n = 14 (45%) agreed they would benefit from taking PrEP, yet = 22 (71%) would take PrEP to make their sibling worry less about them, and = 23 (74%) requested a PrEP referral.
