Background: Even patients with normal computed tomography (CT) head imaging may experience persistent symptoms for months to years after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). There is currently no good way to predict recovery and triage patients who may benefit from early follow-up and targeted intervention. We aimed to assess if existing prognostic models can be improved by serum biomarkers or diffusion tensor imaging metrics (DTI) from MRI, and if serum biomarkers can identify patients for DTI.

Statin-associated muscle symptoms are frequently reported and often lead to discontinuation of statin therapy with an increased risk of cardiovascular events. In vitro studies suggest that statin-mediated inhibition of the mevalonate pathway leads to muscle cell toxicity. We aimed to determine the relationship between mevalonate, LDL-cholesterol, and atorvastatin metabolites in patients with coronary heart disease and self-perceived muscle side effects.

Bioengineering strategy to promote CNS nerve growth and regeneration via chronic glutamate signaling.

Acta Biomater

December 2024

Schepens Eye Research Institute of Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Department of Ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School, Boston, MA, USA. Electronic address:

Being part of the mature mammalian central nervous system, impairments of the retina and optic nerves caused by trauma or diseases often cannot be restored. Progressive degeneration of retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) in glaucoma and other optic neuropathies gradually leads to permanent vision loss, which currently has no cure. The purpose of this study is to develop a biocompatible scaffold to support RGC survival and guide axon growth, facilitating optic nerve repair and regeneration.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effectiveness of a 14-day treatment using topical dexamethasone and artificial tears for patients with dry eyes, measuring clinical response using various eye assessments before and after treatment.
  • - A total of 167 patients (mostly women, average age 54) showed significant improvement in symptoms and objective measures like Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) and Dry Eye Questionnaire (DEQ-5) one month post-treatment.
  • - The findings indicate that changes in symptoms correlate with baseline measurements of dry eye disease severity, while intraocular pressure slightly decreased, showing potential effectiveness of the corticosteroid regimen in a real-world clinical context.

Introduction: Pregnancy involves changes in maternal metabolism that differ between normal-weight women and women with overweight or obesity, including changes in glucose, insulin, lipids, and adipokines. These changes contribute to altered risk profiles for adverse outcomes for both mother and child during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum. We explored associations between visceral fat and prepregnancy body mass index (pBMI), respectively, with glucose and lipid metabolism, as well as with adipokines and C-reactive protein (CRP), measured fasting in early and late pregnancy.

Background: Radiotherapy (RT) can be used to reduce symptoms and maintain open airways for patients with non-small cell lung cancer when systemic treatment is not sufficient. For some patients, tumor control is not achieved due to radioresistance. Concurrent inhibition of epidermal growth factor receptors has been proposed as a strategy to overcome radioresistance but may increase toxicity.

Background: Individuals of South Asian origin have a greater risk of cardiovascular disease after gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) than European individuals. B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) and the amino-terminal fragment of its prohormone (NT-proBNP) are commonly used for heart failure screening and diagnosis, but biologically BNP exerts several beneficial cardiovascular effects primarily by counteracting the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone-system. We asked whether ethnic differences in circulating NT-proBNP levels could be explained by the differences in cardiometabolic and inflammatory risk markers?

Methods: We examined 162 South Asian and 107 Nordic women in Norway 1-3 years after GDM with a clinical examination, fasting blood samples and an oral glucose tolerance test.
