Auricular hematoma drainage is a crucial skill that emergency medicine providers must be proficient in to prevent complications including permanent deformity of the ear. We aimed to develop and evaluate a cost-effective task trainer to allow emergency medicine (EM) residents to practice the key skills of auricular hematoma drainage and pressure dressing application. After creating a task trainer out of a bell pepper, we implemented this training during our EM simulation conference with a total of 20 PGY 1-3 EM residents.

Use of Thermoplastic Splint for the Treatment of Auricular Hematoma.

J Craniofac Surg

April 2021

Otolaryngology Department, Ankara Training and Research Hospital, Health Science University, Ankara, Turkey.

Auricular hematoma is commonly seen in ear nose and throat clinical practice and mostly caused by blunt trauma as a result of traffic accident, wrestling, boxing etc. If hematoma does not discharge, blood supply of the cartilage fails and this results with the necrosis of the auricular cartilage. Incision and drainage of the hematoma is the cornerstone of the surgical treatment and simple compression methods are limited in terms of their ability to eliminate the empty space.

School of Nursing, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tennessee and Vanderbilt University Medical Center, Nashville, Tennessee.

Traumatic auricular hematomas may be encountered in emergency care settings due to blunt trauma such as assaults or contact sports. Emergency nurse practitioners should be able to recognize and treat this injury to prevent complications. Treatment usually consists of evacuation of the hematoma by aspiration or incision and drainage using local or regional anesthesia, followed by the application of a pressure dressing or suturing.

Objective: Frey syndrome is a complication followed by parotidectomy which caused gustatory sweating and facial flush. There were several methods for the prevention of Frey syndrome, but most of them had no obvious effects. In this study, we compare the intra-auricular modification of facelift incision with the traditional lazy-S incision to see if it can decrease the risk of Frey syndrome.

The superficial temporal artery (STA) flap is a versatile flap for head and neck defect reconstruction. It can be based on the frontal branch of the STA and an islanded 360-degree rotation arc for various defects on the scalp, cheek, and auricular region. It provides a nonmicrosurgical option for reconstructing such defects, which is itself relatively easy to perform.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute auricular hematoma is often caused by blunt trauma to the ear, particularly in full contact sports like boxing and wrestling.
  • A common complication is "cauliflower ear," resulting from scarring that leads to deformity, which can be prevented through proper treatment.
  • The case report introduces a new technique combining needle aspiration with a magnet and adapted disc to treat auricular hematomas, offering a simple and less invasive option for athletes.

Unlabelled: In the field of experimental facial vascularized composite tissue allotransplantation, a human auricular subunit model, pedicled on both superficial temporal and posterior auricular arteries, was described. Clinical cases of extensive auricular replantation, however, suggested that a single artery could perfuse the entire flap. In this study, variants of this single-pedicle approach have been studied, aiming to develop a more versatile replantation technique, in which the question of venous drainage has also been addressed.

Auricular haematomas typically occur as a result of the auricle being pulled or subjected to blunt trauma in association with contact sports, accidents or violence. An auricular haematoma requires prompt surgical intervention to avoid cauliflower ear, also known as «wrestler’s ear». A cauliflower ear is a permanent deformity made up of connective tissue and cartilage.
