Background: Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction (TIMI) risk index (TRI) was recently evaluated in patients with acute myocardial infarction and found as an important prognostic index. In the current study, we evaluated the prognostic value of TRI in patients with moderate-high and high risk pulmonary embolism (PE) who were treated with thrombolytic agents.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated the in-hospital and long-term (4-year) prognostic impact of TRI in a total number of 456 patients with moderate-high and high risk PE.

Background: Acute pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious clinical disease characterized by a high mortality rate. The aim of this study was to assess the prognostic value of international normalized ratio (INR) in acute PE patients not on anticoagulant therapy.

Methods: The study included 244 hospitalized acute PE patients who were not receiving previous anticoagulant therapy.

Background: Effect of pulmonary hypertension (PH) on right ventricular (RV) geometry constitutes an ideal target to assess both pulmonary artery pressure (PAP) and its physiological importance. In this study, we evaluated the diagnostic power of the basal segment of septomarginal trabeculation (SMT) in predicting the PH and RV hypertrophy by cardiovascular magnetic resonance (CMR) in patients with idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension (IPAH) and Eisenmenger's syndrome (ES).

Methods: Eleven patients with IPAH, seven patients with ES, and 20 healthy controls were enrolled.

Introduction And Objectives: Recent studies suggest that an increase in red cell distribution width (RDW) levels have a better prognostic value than a single measurement. In the current study, we investigated the predictive value of increasing RDW levels for mortality in acute pulmonary emboli (APE) patients.

Materials And Methods: For the study, 199 APE patients who were hospitalized were enrolled.

Acute dyspnea is a major complaint of patients admitted to cardiology and emergency departments (ED). Acute dyspnea can be life-threatening, and is seen in cases of asthma, pulmonary embolism, acute heart failure and myocardial infarction. The present case is that of a 32-year-old man admitted to the ED with orthopnea position and agitation.

Background And Aim Of The Study: The neutrophil-tolymphocyte ratio (NLR) was found to be a predictor of adverse outcome in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). The ratio may also be a useful marker to predict mortality following valve replacement surgery.

Methods: A total of 932 patients was enrolled retrospectively.

Left ventricular (LV) myocardial perforation is a rare complication following ventricular tachycardia (VT) ablation with radiofrequency (RF); this complication should be diagnosed and treated promptly. LV free wall rupture after elective RF ablation for sustained VT refractory to medical treatment is rarely reported in the medical literature. Herein we discuss an interesting case which contributes to the ongoing literature, regarding a patient who developed LV perforation due to RF ablation for VT which was resistant to pharmacotherapy and repeated cardioversion attempts after acute myocardial infarction.

Background And Objectives: This study aims to compare the characteristics, effectiveness and results of transcatheter closure of atrial septal defect between children, adolescents, and adults.

Subjects And Methods: In this study, 683 patients who underwent atrial septal defect closure in the last 10 years were divided into three groups: children (age <12), adolescents (age 12 to 16), and adults (age >16) as group 1, group 2 and group 3, respectively.

Results: The average defect size and incidence of complex atrial septal defect were higher in group 3 (p=0.

Article Synopsis
  • Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a serious condition that often leads to high rates of morbidity and mortality, with pleural effusion present in about one-third of cases.
  • A study analyzed 463 patients with acute PE and found that those with pleural effusions had significantly higher mortality rates at both 30 days (23% vs. 9%) and long-term (55% vs. 23%) compared to those without effusions.
  • Pleural effusion was identified as an independent predictor of increased mortality risk, highlighting its importance in assessing acute PE patients.

Biventricular thrombi secondary to anterior myocardial infarction is very rare. We present a patient with giant biventricular thrombi subsequent to an old anterior wall myocardial infarction, and devastating consequences, including acute pulmonary artery and femoral artery embolism. We introduce a unique case report with demonstrative and illustrative images.

Background: Cardiac troponins and red cell distribution width (RDW) are associated with increased mortality in acute pulmonary embolism (PE). In this study, we aimed to investigate the accuracy of the combined use of troponin and RDW in predicting short-term mortality in acute PE patients.

Methods: The data of 201 patients with the diagnosis of acute PE were retrospectively analyzed.

Factor V Leiden (FVL) mutation is the most common hereditary thrombophilia. Association of this mutation with venous thrombosis is well established. However, there are several conflicting results regarding the association of FVL with arterial thrombosis, acute coronary syndrome, and intracardiac thrombosis.

Background: Low T3 which is defined as decreased triiodothyronine (T3) and normal thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) and thyroxin (T4) levels is present in many acute diseases and is related to increased mortality. We studied low T3 level's relation to long-term mortality in non-ST-elevation acute coronary syndrome (NSTE-ACS) patients.

Methods: T3, T4, and TSH levels of consecutive NSTE-ACS patients were measured.

Pericardial cyst is a rare congenital anomaly that is usually diagnosed during evaluation for right-sided heart failure. We report a 50-year-old man with a primary diagnosis of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction at admission, whose emergent angiography revealed a calcific mass close to right coronary artery. Further analysis of the mass with computed tomography and three-dimensional echocardiography revealed a giant pericardial cyst causing partial obstruction of superior vena cava.

Relationship Between Neck Circumference and Epicardial Fat Thickness in a Healthy Male Population.

Arq Bras Cardiol

September 2016

Department of Radiology, Van, Gulhane Military Medical Academy Department of Cardiology, Ankara - Turkey.

Background:: Epicardial fat is an upper body visceral fat depot that may play a significant role in the development of adverse metabolic and cardiovascular risk profiles. There is a significant direct relationship between the amount of epicardial fat and general body adiposity (body mass index, BMI), but data regarding subcutaneous adiposity is limited.

Objective:: We conducted a study to determine the association between neck circumference and epicardial fat thickness in healthy young male individuals, and assess their individual correlations with general body adiposity and cardiometabolic risk factors.

Objective: The aims of the present study were to examine, first, overall mortality in the Turkish Adult Risk Factor (TARF) 2015 survey, and second, distribution of cumulative mortality and temporal losses to follow-up in the 7 geographic regions of Turkey over 25 years.

Methods: Information on mode of death was obtained from first-degree relatives and/or primary health center personnel. Information regarding survivors was based on history, examination of the cardiovascular system, and Minnesota coding of electrocardiograms.

Dr.Siyami Ersek Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Center, Cardiology Clinic, İstanbul, Turkey. Electronic address:

Objective: Limited data exist on the incidence of contrast induced nephropathy (CIN) and its impact on in-hospital prognosis of patients diagnosed with acute pulmonary embolism (APE) using contrast computerized tomography pulmonary angiography (CTPA). In this study, we examined the frequency of nephropathy after CTPA in APE patients and its link to in-hospital adverse outcomes.
