Background: Observational studies have linked low vitamin D (VD) levels to increased asthma attacks in children. Subsequent meta-analyses of adults and children revealed that VD treatment might benefit asthmatic patients by reducing the incidence of exacerbations. Therefore, this review aims to analyze the effects of VD supplementation in reducing asthma exacerbations in children.

The expression of angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) in the adipose tissues of obese patients needs further study, as it may aid infection and serve as a viral reservoir. There has been controversy over whether to use ACE inhibitors to prevent coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity. Perindopril, an ACE2 inhibitor, has been proposed; however, its relationship with COVID-19 has not yet been clear.

Background: Diagnosis for HIV in infants is hard to determine, particularly in limited-resource areas. A delay in the diagnosis of HIV-infected infants will lead to high morbidity and mortality. The purpose of this project is to construct a model of an HIV-positive infant and develop a useful and practical scoring system to estimate the likelihood of mother-to-child transmission that can be applied in the field.

Inflammation plays a critical role in myocardial infarction as a critical process in the development of heart failure, involving the development of cardiac fibrosis. Colchicine is a well-established anti-inflammatory drug, but its scientific application in controlling post-acute myocardial infarction (AMI) inflammatory processes has not been established. IL-10 is a key cytokine in modulating inflammatory responses, underscoring its potential as a crucial therapeutic target of colchicine.

  • Thyrotoxicosis is linked to cardiovascular issues and may lead to conditions like tricuspid regurgitation (TR) and mitral regurgitation (MR), though research on these specific heart problems is still limited.
  • A systematic review analyzed 57 case reports of 62 predominantly female patients (average age 45.77 years) with thyrotoxicosis, revealing improvements in heart conditions like TR, MR, heart failure (HF), and pulmonary hypertension (PH) after treatment.
  • The study concludes that treating hyperthyroidism can lead to significant clinical recovery in heart issues within six months, driven by both direct effects of thyroid hormones and other related factors.

Spontaneous thrombosis of post-traumatic direct carotid-cavernous fistula.

Radiol Case Rep

September 2024

Department of Neurology, Neurology, Airlangga University Faculty of Medicine, Dr. Soetomo General Hospital, Mayjend Prof. Dr. Moestopo No. 6-8, Surabaya 60264, Surabaya-Indonesia.

Carotid cavernous fistula (CCF) is an abnormal communication between the carotid artery and the cavernous sinus, which is most commonly caused by trauma. Due to its high-flow nature and aggressive clinical course, spontaneous resolution of CCF is rare, making endovascular embolization necessary. This procedure aims to prevent potential vision loss, emphasizing the importance of timely intervention to preserve visual function.

Abstract: The use of oral fibrinolytic agent (DLBS1033) has been proven for adjuvant treatment in venous thromboembolism, however until now there is no published report about its uses and effectiveness as an addition to the standard therapy of severe COVID-19 cases and hypercoagulopathy. We present two cases of severe confirmed COVID-19 from PCR tests, seen at Ngimbang Hospital, Lamongan, East Java in October and November, 2020. The first patient was a 51-year-old male who presented to ER with fever, dyspnoea, cough, and oxygen desaturation (SpO2 room air 87%), with comorbids of pulmonary hypertension (PH), atrial fibrillation, heart failure secondary to corpulmonale, and hypercoagulopathy.

  • Ventricular Septal Rupture (VSR), a serious complication of acute myocardial infarction, poses significant treatment challenges, especially in hospitals with limited resources.
  • A case study of a 74-year-old woman revealed that she developed VSR after an acute myocardial infarction, presenting with severe symptoms and requiring vasopressors for blood pressure support.
  • The introduction of lisinopril and coenzyme Q10 improved her hemodynamics over three months, suggesting these medications can aid in tissue healing and enhance survival in patients unable to undergo surgery.

Atrial Septal Defect closure in childhood and early adulthood has a good prognosis, but in older individuals the risk-benefit ratio is not as straightforward. We report a 57-year-old man who was easily fatigued when exercising. The cardiac examination revealed a wide and fixed splitting of S2, a pulmonary ejection systolic murmur grade III/VI, and increased jugular venous pressure.

Wellens syndrome, an ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) equivalent, is also known as T-wave left anterior descending (LAD) coronary artery disease. Wellens syndrome is characterized by a unique electrocardiogram (ECG) pattern that suggests a significant stenosis in the left anterior descending coronary artery that warrants immediate intervention. Hereby, we present a case report of Wellens syndrome in a patient with a history of hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) that may be potentially mistaken for pseudo- Wellens syndrome because the ECG pattern mimics left ventricular strain pattern (LVSP) in left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH).
