Background: Environmental enteric dysfunction (EED) is an enigmatic disorder of the small intestine that is postulated to play a role in childhood undernutrition, a pressing global health problem. Defining the incidence of this disorder, its pathophysiological features, and its contribution to impaired linear and ponderal growth has been hampered by the difficulty in directly sampling the small intestinal mucosa and microbial community (microbiota).

Methods: In this study, among 110 young children (mean age, 18 months) with linear growth stunting who were living in an urban slum in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and had not benefited from a nutritional intervention, we performed endoscopy in 80 children who had biopsy-confirmed EED and available plasma and duodenal samples.

Mymensingh Med J

January 2016

Dr Nilima Barman, Associate Professor, Department of Pathology, Dr. Sirajul Islam Medical College, Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Article Synopsis
  • Zinc is crucial for immune function, and its deficiency can lead to reduced T cell numbers and weakened immunity, which is particularly significant in the development of pulmonary tuberculosis.
  • A study in Bangladesh analyzed serum zinc levels in 50 patients with multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDR-TB) and found 76% had zinc levels below the normal range of 70-120 μgm/dl.
  • The average serum zinc level was 60.40 μgm/dl, indicating an impaired immune status in these patients, with no significant correlation found between zinc levels and age or sex.

Background: Graves' disease, a well-known cause of hyperthyroidism, is an autoimmune disease with multi-system involvement. More prevalent among young women, it appears as an uncommon cardiovascular complication during pregnancy, posing a diagnostic challenge, largely owing to difficulty in detecting the complication, as a result of a low index of suspicion of Graves' disease presenting during pregnancy. Globally, cardiovascular disease is an important factor for pregnancy-related morbidity and mortality.
