Valosin-containing protein (VCP)-associated multisystem proteinopathy (MSP) is a rare genetic disorder with abnormalities in the autophagy pathway leading to various combinations of myopathy, bone diseases, and neurodegeneration. Ninety percent of patients with VCP-associated MSP have myopathy, but there is no consensus-based guideline. The goal of this working group was to develop a best practice set of provisional recommendations for VCP myopathy which can be easily implemented across the globe.

Studies have suggested an association between particulate matter (PM) air pollution and certain congenital anomalies (CAs). However, most studies assumed a linear concentration-response relation and were based on anomalies that were ascertained at birth or up to 1 year of age. We investigated associations between exposures to PM during the first trimester of pregnancy and CAs in 9 organ systems using birth and childhood follow-up data from a leading health care provider in Israel.

Chronic pain is common in people living with HIV (PLWH), causes substantial disability and is associated with limitations in daily activities. Opioids are commonly prescribed for pain treatment among PLWH, but evidence of sustained efficacy is mixed. There is little information available on how PLWH who have chronic pain use multimodal strategies in pain management.

Obesity and migraine are often comorbid. Poor sleep quality is also common among individuals with migraine and may be influenced by comorbidities such as obesity. However, understanding of migraine's relationship with sleep and the potential exacerbating effect of obesity remains limited.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were faced with challenges when caring for patients, safely administering intravenous (IV) medications and solutions, and protecting themselves from the virus. To address these challenges, nurses moved infusion pumps outside of intensive care unit (ICU) rooms of patients with COVID-19 to minimize their exposure to the virus, conserve personal protective equipment, and efficiently administer IV medications and solutions. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore and describe nurses' perception of managing infusion pumps outside the ICU rooms of patients with COVID-19 at 6 acute care hospitals.

Background: HPV vaccination has been recommended and reimbursed for girls in Germany since 2007. In June 2018 the German Standing Committee on Vaccination (STIKO) recommended the gender-neutral vaccination of adolescents aged 9 to 14 years with catch-up through age 17. Objectives of this study were to describe the uptake of vaccination in boys before and during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: The natriuretic peptides (NPs) are potent natriuretic/diuretic and vasodilatory factors, and augmentation of their levels or signaling via inhibition of the enzymes neprilysin (NEP) and phosphodiesterase 9 (PDE9), respectively, has beneficial actions in heart failure (HF).
Objectives: The authors investigated dual enhancement of NP bioactivity by combining PDE9 inhibition and NEP inhibition in HF using an ovine model.
Methods: Eight sheep with pacing-induced HF received on 4 separate days intravenous PDE9 inhibition (PF-04749982), NEP inhibition (SCH-32615), PDE9 inhibition + NEP inhibition (PI+NI), and vehicle control treatment.

The Endothelial Activation and Stress Index (EASIX) is a prognostic tool that uses common clinical laboratory values and has been shown to predict non-relapse mortality (NRM) and overall survival (OS) at the onset of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). We hypothesized that EASIX calculated at different time points pre- and post- HCT may predict NRM and OS, and that EASIX calculated at onset of GVHD may predict response to steroids. We evaluated the EASIX score pre- and post-HCT in 152 patients with lymphoid malignancies undergoing unmodified reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) alloHCT with uniform GVHD prophylaxis.

The latest consensus standards for patients with inflammatory bowel disease published by the European Crohn's and Colitis Organisation conclude that optimizing quality of care in inflammatory bowel disease involves information and education after diagnosis. A scoping review was performed to identify educational interventions in newly diagnosed inflammatory bowel disease patients. A systematic literature search was conducted using five databases and gray literature.

Objective: Loss-of-control (LOC) eating is common in adults undergoing bariatric surgery. Agreement between real-time and retrospective assessment methods is unclear.
Methods: Adults with severe obesity reported on LOC eating over the preceding 28 days via Eating Disorder Examination-Questionnaire (EDE-Q) items and in near real time over 10 days via ecological momentary assessment (EMA; involving daily repeated surveys delivered via smartphone in the natural environment), with both assessment forms completed before surgery and at 3, 6, and 12 months after surgery.

Background: People with mental illnesses and people living in poverty have higher rates of incarceration than others, but relatively little is known about the long-term impact that incarceration has on an individual's mental health later in life.
Objective: To evaluate prior incarceration's association with mental health at midlife.
Design: Retrospective cohort study PARTICIPANTS: Participants from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1979 (NLSY79)-a nationally representative age cohort of individuals 15 to 22 years of age in 1979-who remained in follow-up through age 50.

Objective: To evaluate the cost-effectiveness of Budesonide/Glycopyrronium/Formoterol (BUD/GLY/FOR) versus LAMA/LABA and ICS/LABA, respectively, in patients with moderate to severe COPD, from the Spanish National Healthcare System (NHS) perspective.
Methods: A lifetime Markov model with monthly cycle length was developed with baseline and treatment effect data from ETHOS clinical trial, together with utility values from literature and Spanish healthcare resource costs (€, 2021). A 3% annual discount rate was used for costs and benefits.

B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), a key regulator of B-cell proliferation and survival, is highly expressed in almost all cases of plasma cell neoplasms and B-lymphoproliferative malignancies. BCMA is a robust biomarker of plasma cells and a therapeutic target with substantial clinical significance. However, the expression of BCMA in circulating tumor cells of patients with hematological malignancies has not been validated for the detection of circulating plasma and B cells.

Background: Psychological distress-elevated symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or psychosocial stress-has been associated with risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite increasing attention to the importance of these factors for CVD prevention, the state of this science requires updated synthesis to enable practice recommendations. Moreover, it is unknown whether psychological distress based on screeners, validated self-report instruments that efficiently identify those who may require mental health services or additional support, is associated with incident CVD.
