Studies have suggested an association between particulate matter (PM) air pollution and certain congenital anomalies (CAs). However, most studies assumed a linear concentration-response relation and were based on anomalies that were ascertained at birth or up to 1 year of age. We investigated associations between exposures to PM during the first trimester of pregnancy and CAs in 9 organ systems using birth and childhood follow-up data from a leading health care provider in Israel.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, nurses were faced with challenges when caring for patients, safely administering intravenous (IV) medications and solutions, and protecting themselves from the virus. To address these challenges, nurses moved infusion pumps outside of intensive care unit (ICU) rooms of patients with COVID-19 to minimize their exposure to the virus, conserve personal protective equipment, and efficiently administer IV medications and solutions. The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore and describe nurses' perception of managing infusion pumps outside the ICU rooms of patients with COVID-19 at 6 acute care hospitals.

Background: The natriuretic peptides (NPs) are potent natriuretic/diuretic and vasodilatory factors, and augmentation of their levels or signaling via inhibition of the enzymes neprilysin (NEP) and phosphodiesterase 9 (PDE9), respectively, has beneficial actions in heart failure (HF).

Objectives: The authors investigated dual enhancement of NP bioactivity by combining PDE9 inhibition and NEP inhibition in HF using an ovine model.

Methods: Eight sheep with pacing-induced HF received on 4 separate days intravenous PDE9 inhibition (PF-04749982), NEP inhibition (SCH-32615), PDE9 inhibition + NEP inhibition (PI+NI), and vehicle control treatment.

The Endothelial Activation and Stress Index (EASIX) is a prognostic tool that uses common clinical laboratory values and has been shown to predict non-relapse mortality (NRM) and overall survival (OS) at the onset of acute graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) after allogeneic hematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). We hypothesized that EASIX calculated at different time points pre- and post- HCT may predict NRM and OS, and that EASIX calculated at onset of GVHD may predict response to steroids. We evaluated the EASIX score pre- and post-HCT in 152 patients with lymphoid malignancies undergoing unmodified reduced intensity conditioning (RIC) alloHCT with uniform GVHD prophylaxis.

Article Synopsis
  • Anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK) inhibitors are effective for ALK-positive metastatic non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but access is limited in developing countries like Malaysia due to financial constraints.
  • A study analyzed 65 ALK-positive NSCLC patients from 18 Malaysian hospitals, finding that most received crizotinib, the most common ALK inhibitor, and showed improved overall survival (OS) compared to those on chemotherapy.
  • Although ALK inhibitors led to a longer median time on treatment (TOT) and OS, the results were not statistically significant likely due to the small sample size.

B-cell maturation antigen (BCMA), a key regulator of B-cell proliferation and survival, is highly expressed in almost all cases of plasma cell neoplasms and B-lymphoproliferative malignancies. BCMA is a robust biomarker of plasma cells and a therapeutic target with substantial clinical significance. However, the expression of BCMA in circulating tumor cells of patients with hematological malignancies has not been validated for the detection of circulating plasma and B cells.

Background: Psychological distress-elevated symptoms of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), or psychosocial stress-has been associated with risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite increasing attention to the importance of these factors for CVD prevention, the state of this science requires updated synthesis to enable practice recommendations. Moreover, it is unknown whether psychological distress based on screeners, validated self-report instruments that efficiently identify those who may require mental health services or additional support, is associated with incident CVD.
