Globally adenoidectomy is increasingly being performed in isolation for children who have middle ear effusion or chronic otitis media, chronic rhinosinusitis and nasopharyngeal obstruction causing sleep apnoea and mouth breathing. Several techniques have been described lately including endoscopic powered adenoidectomy with debrider. The present study was undertaken to compare the effectiveness of endoscopic powered adenoidectomy (EA) with respect to conventional adenoidectomy (CA).

Prediction of stature from long bones versus hand and foot measurements: A comparative study of the Kolhapur population.

Natl Med J India

December 2021

Department of Anatomy, Dr D.Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, D.Y. Patil Medical College, D.Y. Patil Education Society, Kolhapur 416006, Maharashtra, India.

Background Estimation of stature is usually done by measurement of the long bones. Although hand and foot dimensions are useful in predicting stature, they are population-specific. Methods We compared the accuracy of predicting stature by hand and foot dimensions, with long bone (tibia and ulna) lengths, and developed a stature predictive regression formula from the parameters used for the sample population in Kolhapur.

A Study on the Association of Psoriasis with Metabolic Disorders.

J Assoc Physicians India

April 2019

HOD and Professor, Department of Dermatology, Venereology and Leprology, Dr. D.Y. Patil Hospital and Research centre, Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra.

Background: Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory and hyper-proliferative skin disorder which is chronically relapsing with high morbidity and impaired quality of life, characterized by erythematous scaly patches affecting skin, joints and nails. It is a disorder of immune system involving genetic, immunologic and environtmental factors. Metabolic syndrome (also known as metabolic syndrome X) is a grouping of interrelated medical traits that, when present, indicate an increased risk of developing noninsulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and/or cardiovascular disease.

A combination of chemotherapy with nonconventional nanoparticle based physical destruction therapy has been proposed clinically to reduce the prospect of evolution of drug resistance in cancer. Superparamagnetic nanoparticles have been actively used for synergetic cancer therapy including magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To explore this direction of potential applications in cancer therapy, we have functionalized superparamagnetic LaSrMnO nanoparticles (SPMNPs) with an oleic acid-polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymeric micelle (PM) structure, and loaded it with anticancer cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) in a high loading capacity (∼60.

Neuropathic arthropathy (Charcot joints), which most frequently affects the weight-bearing joints of the body, is commonly associated with a variety of medical and neurological conditions, and is notoriously difficult to treat due to the nature of the underlying pathology. We present a case of idiopathic neuropathic arthropathy of the thumb CMC joint of an elderly female complicated by blunt trauma to the thumb. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case in the literature of this rare association.

Introduction: Dental implants form the mainstay of dental treatment involving rehabilitation of missing teeth. One of the major concerns for the clinicians doing dental implants is the postsurgical failure of dental implants. Success of dental implants is dependent upon the skills of the surgeon and the amount and quality of the bone remaining at the edentulous area where dental implant has to be placed.

Introduction: Giant cell tumor accounts for 5 to 9 percent of all primary bony tumors. Giant cell tumors are usually found in the long bones, most often the distal femur, proximal tibia, distal radius and rarely arising from the ribs. In this paper, we describe a case of giant cell tumor presented at an unusual location of the costovertebral junction as a dumbbell shaped tumor.

Use of Infant Feeding Tube for Staged Flexor Tendon Reconstruction.

Indian J Surg

December 2015

Department of Plastic Surgery, Padmashree Dr D Y Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Sector-5, Nerul, Navi Mumbai, Maharasthra 400 706 India.

A two-stage flexor tendon reconstruction using a silicone rod in the first stage and a free tendon graft through the pseudo sheath formed around the silicone in the second stage was described by Hunter and Salisbury for a neglected and failed flexor tendon reconstruction. We are describing a technique where we have used an infant feeding tube as a substitute for silicone rods, which substantially reduces the cost of procedure but delivers the same results.

Cholesteatoma and Its Management.

Indian J Otolaryngol Head Neck Surg

September 2015

Department of ENT, Lilavati Hospital and Research Centre, Mumbai, India ; Department of ENT, Dr D. Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, Navi Mumbai, India.

Cholesteatoma is probably one of the very few conditions in the body with as many controversies regarding its name, definition, genesis and pathology. It is essentially a benign tumour, which pushes away the middle ear cleft mucosa and any tissues that get in its way. The indisputable starting point is the presence of an inflammatory process of the upper airways and the middle ear cleft mucosa.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is an autoimmune disease most frequently found in women of child bearing age and may co-exist with pregnancy. Disease exacerbation, increased foetal loss, neonatal lupus and an increased incidence of pre-eclampsia are the major challenges. Its multisystem involvement and therapeutic interventions like anticoagulants, steroids and immunosuppressive agents pose a high risk for both surgery and anaesthesia.

Nitric oxide (NO) is a biological messenger produced by mammalian cells serving various functions including regulation of blood flow, platelet function, immunity, and neurotransmission. The paranasal sinuses and nasal mucosa are a major source of exhaled NO. The aim of the study is to compare the nasal NO (nNO) levels in patients with chronic rhinosinusitis with those of common cold patients and controls and to correlate CT scores with nNO levels.

Upper gastrointestinal symptoms like vomiting, abdominal pain, abdominal distention may be caused by many conditions like complicated peptic/duodenal ulcer, gastritis or hiatal hernia. However, these symptoms are uncommonly produced by superior mesenteric artery (SMA) syndrome. SMA syndrome is triggered when there is narrowing of the mesenteric angle and shortening of the aortomesenteric distance.

Granulomatous slack skin (GSS) is a rare cutaneous disorder characterized by the evolution of circumscribed erythematous loose skin masses, especially in the body folds, and histologically by a loss of elastic fibers and granulomatous T-cell infiltrates. This disease is often associated with preceding or successive lymphoproliferative malignancies, especially Mycosis Fungoides (MF) and Hodgkin's Disease (HD). Whether Granulomatous Slack Skin Disease is a benign disorder, an unusual host reaction or a precursor of malignant lymphoma or an indolent Cutaneous T-cell Lymphoma (CTCL) in itself, is still a controversy.
