Introduction: Post-operative complications related to hardware, particularly symptoms caused by it, such as implant impingement, wire breakage, and skin infection are frequently reported following surgical management of patellar fractures with stainless steel wires. As a potential solution, some researchers have advocated for the use of non-absorbable sutures for fracture fixation. This study aims to investigate the clinical and radiological outcomes of patients treated with fiber taping as an alternative technique.

Background: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing inflammatory skin disease that significantly affects the quality of life of patients. Multiple factors affect the disease's course and severity. HS is a debilitating disease and often recalcitrant to treatment, resulting in a deterioration of quality of life; hence, there is a need to evaluate the factors affecting the quality of life in patients with HS.

Manual interpretation of chest radiographs is a challenging task and is prone to errors. An automated system capable of categorizing chest radiographs based on the pathologies identified could aid in the timely and efficient diagnosis of chest pathologies. For this retrospective study, 4476 chest radiographs were collected between January and April 2021 from two tertiary care hospitals.

Globally adenoidectomy is increasingly being performed in isolation for children who have middle ear effusion or chronic otitis media, chronic rhinosinusitis and nasopharyngeal obstruction causing sleep apnoea and mouth breathing. Several techniques have been described lately including endoscopic powered adenoidectomy with debrider. The present study was undertaken to compare the effectiveness of endoscopic powered adenoidectomy (EA) with respect to conventional adenoidectomy (CA).

Over the years, laboratories performing assisted reproductive technologies have been tasked with a growing number of procedures of increased complexity. New technologies, including hardware and software innovations, are constantly evolving, and evaluated as potential tools to improve laboratory and clinical outcomes. The assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratory plays a crucial role in fertility treatments and, therefore, it is often under intense scrutiny with regards to performance and success rates.

Article Synopsis
  • Advances in assisted reproduction techniques have increased the importance of assessing gametes and embryos to improve ART treatment outcomes.
  • The quality of embryos largely depends on the maturity of oocytes and culture conditions, with mature oocytes having higher fertilization rates.
  • Various grading systems and innovative methods (like preimplantation genetic testing and morphokinetics) help identify embryos with the best implantation potential, allowing for more efficient embryo transfer.

Oocyte retrieval, oocyte denudation, and embryo transfer are crucial processes during assisted reproduction technology (ART). Air quality in the ART laboratory, temperature, pH of the media used and the time interval between oocyte retrieval and insemination are all critical factors. Anesthesia is required for oocyte retrieval, however, evidence regarding the potential impact of different methods (general anesthesia, conscious sedation, and local anesthesia) on the clinical outcomes is unclear.

The assisted reproductive technology (ART) laboratory is a complex system designed to sustain the fertilization, survival, and culture of the preimplantation embryo to the blastocyst stage. ART outcomes depend on numerous factors, among which are the equipment, supplies and culture media used. The number and type of incubators also may affect ART results.

Background The role of T-regulatory cells (Tregs) in inflammatory renal disease is not yet established. We attempted to study peripherally circulating T-cells expressing RORtFoxp3 dynamics in acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease (CKD). Aim To determine the role of T-regulatory cells in AKI and CKD.

Prediction of stature from long bones versus hand and foot measurements: A comparative study of the Kolhapur population.

Natl Med J India

December 2021

Department of Anatomy, Dr D.Y. Patil Hospital and Research Centre, D.Y. Patil Medical College, D.Y. Patil Education Society, Kolhapur 416006, Maharashtra, India.

Background Estimation of stature is usually done by measurement of the long bones. Although hand and foot dimensions are useful in predicting stature, they are population-specific. Methods We compared the accuracy of predicting stature by hand and foot dimensions, with long bone (tibia and ulna) lengths, and developed a stature predictive regression formula from the parameters used for the sample population in Kolhapur.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the knowledge of healthcare professionals in Maharashtra, India, regarding the management of severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARI) related to COVID-19, using a questionnaire adapted from WHO guidelines.
  • Results showed that overall correct response rates were only 66.80% for median and 58.62% for mean, with ICU personnel and medical postgraduates performing better than nursing and allied health professionals.
  • The authors emphasize the need for comprehensive training programs and a structured approach to improve SARI management among all healthcare professionals, highlighting these findings as a baseline for future training resource development.

Assessment of preferable site for temperature measurement using non-contact infra-red temperature among pediatric patients.

Minerva Pediatr (Torino)

February 2024

Department of Pediatrics, Dr D.Y. Patil Hospital and Research Center, D.Y. Patil Medical College, D.Y. Patil Education Society, Kolhapur, India.

Background: Accurate temperature measurement with little or no discomfort that is safe, without risk of hospital-acquired infections or perforations, is the preferred choice of medical professionals in pediatric settings. The objective was to discover the preferable site for body temperature measurement using non-contact infra-red thermometer (NCIT) among pediatric patients.

Methods: NCIT measurement at mid forehead (F), right temporal region (T), right side of neck-over-carotid artery area (N), jugular notch (J), sternum (S), umbilical region and sublingual region (U) were compared with digital axillary temperature (DAT) in a single attempt in 500 patients, aged between 2 to 5 years with fever.

Obstructive sleep apnea may be associated with numerous comorbidities and perioperative complications. Poor laryngeal anatomy visualization can be a cause of failed tracheal intubation after multiple attempts in patients with sleep-disordered breathing due to the underlying adenoid enlargement. We present a case of difficult endotracheal intubation in a 52-year-old menopausal female patient posted for tonsillectomy with adenoid resection with a history of snoring and difficulty in breathing while asleep.

A combination of chemotherapy with nonconventional nanoparticle based physical destruction therapy has been proposed clinically to reduce the prospect of evolution of drug resistance in cancer. Superparamagnetic nanoparticles have been actively used for synergetic cancer therapy including magnetic fluid hyperthermia (MFH) guided by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). To explore this direction of potential applications in cancer therapy, we have functionalized superparamagnetic LaSrMnO nanoparticles (SPMNPs) with an oleic acid-polyethylene glycol (PEG) polymeric micelle (PM) structure, and loaded it with anticancer cancer drug doxorubicin (DOX) in a high loading capacity (∼60.
