We conducted a single-center study at a free community testing site in Baltimore City to assess the accuracy of self-performed rapid antigen tests (RATs) for COVID-19. Self-administered BinaxNOW RATs were compared with clinician-performed RATs and against a reference lab molecular testing as the gold standard. Of the 953 participants, 14.

Introduction: Primary cardiac myxomas are rare tumors. Concurrent valvular lesion is a common finding on evaluation which is thought to be due to annular dilatation secondary to tumor movement across the valve, functional obstruction across the valve, and severe pulmonary hypertension secondary to chronic obstruction. A common belief among surgeons is that excision of myxoma leads to abatement of symptoms, and further valve intervention may not be warranted.

Itraconazole (ITZ) has been the mainstay of oral antifungal treatment for the current epidemic of recalcitrant dermatophytosis (RD) in India. Recently, a newer formulation of ITZ, super bioavailable itraconazole (SUBA-ITZ), is made available in the market by many pharmaceutical companies. It is important for dermatologists to understand the pharmacokinetic properties of SUBA-ITZ vis-a-vis conventional pellet formulation to use it effectively and safely.

Background: Alopecia areata (AA) presents with noncicatricial alopecia and has multifactorial etiology. Janus Kinase inhibitors (JAKibs) with potential efficacy and favorable side-effect profile are the first class of drugs to receive FDA approval in AA.

Objectives: Our primary objective was to assess the complete response rates to tofacitinib monotherapy in severe and recalcitrant AA, alopecia totalis (AT), and alopecia universalis (AU) patients using the latest percentage change in Severity of alopecia tool (SALT) score.

Article Synopsis
  • - Polymorphous light eruption is an allergic skin reaction triggered by sunlight, and it involves a type IV hypersensitivity to unknown skin antigens caused by UV exposure.
  • - A study assessed the effectiveness of tofacitinib in seven patients who had not responded to other treatments; results showed significant relief from itching and faster healing.
  • - Tofacitinib works by inhibiting certain enzymes (JAK1 and JAK3) that contribute to inflammation, helping to lower the overactive immune response seen in polymorphous light eruption.

The current goal of Zero Leprosy focuses on the interruption of the transmission of infection within endemic regions. While the role of the skin in the transmission dynamics of leprosy has not been clearly delineated, recent research on the environmental presence of lepra bacilli brings this aspect back into focus. We present a case of lepromatous leprosy with perforated-appearing histoid lesions on the palms and soles, demonstrating the presence of lepra bacilli throughout the epidermis.

Objective In today's era of highly methodological oncological practices in place, we have a huge database to regulate, and it is foreseeable that a humongous load of information is ahead of us that we need to organize and comprehend. With the advancement in surgical equipment and evolving procedures, we need to store the information in a transferrable, understandable, and systematic way to prevent any ebb in the future. The systematic recording of operative data is even more important for patient management, training, and research.

Introduction: Hyperandrogenism is a clinical state consequent to excess androgen production by the ovary, adrenals, or increased peripheral conversion of androgens. The varied manifestations of hyperandrogenism include seborrhea, acne, infertility, hirsutism, or overt virilization of which adult female acne, hirsutism, and female pattern hair loss are of clinical relevance to dermatologists.

Areas Covered: We limited our narrative review to literature published during period from 1 January 1985 to Dec 2022 and searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Web of Science (WOS), Scopus, and Embase databases with main search keywords were 'Hyperandrogenism,' 'Female,' 'Biochemical,' 'Dermatological', and 'Dermatology.

Background: Diabetes is a major burden globally, more commonly so in developing countries, as its complications are detected relatively late due to underdeveloped healthcare systems. These complications, when detected, are more or less irreversible, thereby leading to increased morbidity and mortality. Among these, complications related to bones (mainly osteoporosis) start fairly early (even in the prediabetes stage) but are less emphasized, nonetheless are major contributors to morbidity in diabetics due to increased fracture risk.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how factors like marriage style, education, and parenting affect depression in married individuals, as previous research shows that family and societal influences impact psychological well-being and life satisfaction.
  • Involving 433 married participants from Istanbul, the research utilizes machine learning techniques—specifically decision trees (DT) and random forests (RF)—to predict depressive symptoms, achieving an 80% accuracy with DT and 60% with RF.
  • The findings suggest that these machine learning models outperform traditional statistical methods in identifying couples at risk for depression, paving the way for better support systems to proactively address mental health in married individuals.

Introduction: Neoplastic meningitis (NM), also known as leptomeningeal carcinomatosis, is characterized by the infiltration of tumor cells into the meninges, and poses a significant therapeutic challenge owing to its aggressive nature and limited treatment options. Breast cancer is a common cause of NM among solid tumors, further highlighting the urgent need to explore effective therapeutic strategies. This review aims to provide insights into the evolving landscape of NM therapy in breast cancer by collating existing research, evaluating current treatments, and identifying potential emerging therapeutic options.

Objectives: To review whether the periodic rotation of nasal mask with binasal prongs is superior to continuous application of either of the interfaces in preterm infants on non-invasive positive pressure respiratory support.

Method: The authors searched Medline, CINAHL, Embase, Web of Science, and CENTRAL for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing periodic rotation of the two interfaces (mask or prongs) against the continuous application of either, in preterm infants on nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP) or nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV). They performed a random-effects meta-analysis using RevMan 5.

Urinary biomarkers are a promising diagnostic modality whose role was explored in nephrotic syndrome (NS). We estimated urinary apolipoprotein A1 (Apo A1) and neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) in children with first-episode NS (FENS) and controls with a longitudinal follow-up to see the serial changes during remission. The study groups comprised 35 children with FENS and an equal number of age- and sex-matched controls.
