Background: Vitamin B12, an indispensable micronutrient, is pivotal in numerous physiological processes, with particular significance during pregnancy and fetal development. The increasing adoption of vegetarian diets and the economic challenges associated with accessing animal-based food sources contribute to the prevalence of vitamin B12 deficiency. This study aims to examine the levels of vitamin B12 and homocysteine in pregnant women upon admission for delivery and to analyze corresponding cord blood samples from their newborn infants in a substantial sample within the Istanbul metropolitan area.

A Survey of the Turkish Oncology Group (TOG): Are the Oncologists Trained for Decision Making on Geriatric Cancer Patients?

Introduction: Most newly diagnosed cancers occur in older adults, and it is important to understand a patient's underlying health status when making treatment decisions. Therefore, clinicians need enhanced competencies and skills to effectively care for this population. However, most clinicians receive minimal to no training in geriatrics.

Arthroscopy-assisted procedure provides less residual horizontal instability and optimal coracoid tunnel creation with less radiation exposure compared to percutaneous procedure after endo-button fixation of type III AC joint dislocations.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to evaluate the postoperative radiological and functional results of patients treated with arthroscopy-assisted (AA) and percutaneous (P) procedures using endo-button for type III acromioclavicular joint dislocations with a minimum 1-year follow-up. The study hypothesis was that the AA technique would provide more favourable coracoid tunnels.

Methods: This retrospective study included patients who underwent surgery between 2017 and 2022.

Exploring shared triggers and potential etiopathogenesis between migraine and idiopathic/genetic epilepsy: Insights from a multicenter tertiary-based study.

Introduction: Migraine and epilepsy are two episodic disorders that share common pathophysiological mechanisms. The aim of our research was to assess the possible shared etiopathogenesis by analyzing the relations of headache, and seizure triggers, based on information obtained from a national cohort surveying the headache characteristics of 809 patients who had been diagnosed with idiopathic/genetic epilepsy.

Material And Methods: Our study utilized data from a multi-center, nationwide investigation of headaches in 809 patients with idiopathic/genetic epilepsy.

Purpose: The effectiveness of the Colorectal Cancer (CRC) screening program is assessed based on the reduction in CRC mortality and incidence rates over time. To accurately estimate the long-term impact, it is advisable to monitor additional indicators such as age and stage-specific incidence rates. Our objective is to evaluate the effectiveness of the National CRC Screening Program in Turkey and analyze its influence on disease stage at diagnosis and survival rates.

Endovascular treatments of atherosclerotic renovascular disease: a narrative review and literature search.

In recent years, endovascular treatments have become more common in patients with renal artery stenosis and aneurysm. Although the treatment algorithms are not universally accepted, endovascular therapy can be readily utilized for the appropriate indications in the context of surgical treatment for renovascular diseases. The most important factor to consider is that the correct indication is applied for such treatment.

Transvaginal natural orifice endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) for elderly patients.

Objectives: To evaluate the feasibility and safety of transvaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES) in patients 70 years and over.

Material And Methods: The study consisted of eleven patients aged 70 and over who underwent vNOTES for a variety of gynaecological indications at a tertiary referral hospital. The medical and surgical data were noted: age, parity, history of comorbidity, number and type of previous surgeries, body mass index (BMI), operating time, the requirement of intraoperative conversion, the presence of intra- or postoperative complication, estimated blood loss, pre-and postoperative hemoglobin levels, visual analog scale (VAS) pain scores at 6th, 12th and 24th hours, length of hospital stay, and the final pathology results.

Background: Rotational malalignment is a common problem in pediatric supracondylar humerus fractures (SCHF). Several techniques have been described to evaluate the true rotation value. Although the Prabhakar and Gordon techniques are used frequently, their superiority to each other in terms of measurement quality is unknown.

Does radiation exposure during pediatric supracondylar humeral fracture surgery change according to the C-arm position? A comparison of two different techniques.

Introduction: In the surgical treatment of supracondylar humeral fractures (SHF), the surgeon has to stand right next to the fluoroscopy device, so it is very important to know how to use it in the most appropriate way to reduce radiation exposure. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of using C-arm in uniplanar (inverted) and biplanar (standard-horizontal) configurations on (1) the radiation exposure to the surgeon, and (2) surgical time and fluoroscopy exposure time.

Material And Methods: This prospective randomised study was conducted on 20 patients who underwent fluoroscopy during closed reduction and percutaneous pinning for a SHF.

As our tertiary-level trauma center is close to an industrial zone and associated international port, industrial injuries are seen more often than is expected in routine practice. The aim of this study was to present the demographic data, treatment options, and changes in work-life of patients with foot and ankle injuries due to a forklift accident, and to determine the factors affecting the clinical outcome. The study was conducted in our university hospital and included patients who presented with a foot and ankle injury resulting from a forklift accident.

The Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic Restrictions on Musculoskeletal Pathology Services.

Background And Objectives:  The COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on healthcare in musculoskeletal pathology. There is no standard protocol for pathology services during a pandemic. The study aimed to assess the impact of COVID-19 restrictions on the workload of the musculoskeletal pathology service and the hurdles faced in collaboration with the orthopedic oncology unit in a tertiary reference center in a developing country.

Revisiting the Radical Radiotherapy-Radiochemotherapy Results in Anal Canal Cancers: (TROD Gastrointestinal Group Study 02-005).

Background And Aim: This study aimed to determine treatment outcomes and factors affecting prognosis in patients diagnosed with anal canal cancer who received radical radiotherapy (RT) or radiotherapy combined with chemotherapy (CT-RT) in radiation oncology centers in Turkey and compare the results with literature.

Material And Method: The study included 193 patients with anal canal cancer reported between 1995 and 2019, of which 162 had complete data. The study was conducted in 11 radiation oncology centers, and a joint database was shared among them.

Nasal polyps are benign sinonasal masses composed of eosinophils and extracellular edema. Pathogenesis of the polyp formation is unclear but several studies strongly suggest a correlation with infection, inflammation and allergy conditions. Our aim is to investigate the potential link between allergy and nasal polyp in tissue level.

Does shortening the duration of radiotherapy treatment in breast cancer increase the risk of radiation pneumonia: A retrospective study.

Randomized studies evaluating hypofractionation and conventional fractionation radiotherapy treatments (RT) in patients with breast cancer have shown that hypofractionation achieves similar results to conventional fractionation in terms of survival and local control rates. It has also been shown that their long-term toxicities are similar. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of hypofractionated radiotherapy (H-RT) and conventional radiotherapy (C-RT) on lung toxicity and identify factors affecting this toxicity in patients with breast cancer.

Peri-ictal headache: An underestimated prognostic finding associated with idiopathic epilepsies.

Objective: There are a handful of studies investigating peri-ictal headache (PIH) and its clinical associations in patients with idiopathic/genetic epilepsies (I/GE). This multi-center study aimed to investigate PIH, which is an ignored comorbid condition in patients with I/GE, by headache experts and epileptologists working together.

Methods: The data were collected from a cross-sectional large study, using two structured questionnaires for headache and epilepsy features, fulfilled by neurologists.

Escitalopram co-prescription in anastrozole-treated breast cancer patients.

Objective: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the impact of escitalopram co-prescription on plasma anastrozole levels in post-menopausal breast cancer patients.

Methods: A total of 24 post-menopausal operated breast cancer patients co-prescribed with escitalopram and anastrozole were included. Blood samples were collected, before and 1-month after the onset of escitalopram to analyze plasma anastrozole and estradiol levels.

Methods: Data were obtained from the Turkish Society of Nephrology Glomerular Diseases (TSN-GOLD) Working Group database. Demographic characteristics, indications for biopsy, diagnosis of the glomerular diseases, comorbidities, laboratory and biopsy findings of all patients were recorded.

Antiangiogenic Molecules Suppressed Meningioma-Induced Neovascularization: A Corneal Angiogenesis Study.

Aim: To investigate the angiogenic effects of bevacizumab and imatinib on different meningioma tissue grades.

Material And Methods: In this study, in silico analysis of angiogenesis-related gene expression was carried out using previously reported datasets. Messenger ribonucleic acid expressions of VEGFA, VEGFB, PDGFRA, and PDGFRB genes were obtained from two different meningioma transcriptome datasets.

The role of the PTEN/mTOR axis in clinical response of rectal cancer patients.

Background: Preoperative chemoradiotherapy has long been accepted as a method to improve survival and lifetime quality of rectal cancer patients. However, physiologic effects of these therapies largely depend on the resistance of cells to the radiation, type of chemotherapeutic agents and individual responses. As one of the signaling cascades involved in chemo- or radiation- resistance, the present study focused on several proteins involved in pTEN/Akt/mTOR pathway to explore their prognostic significance.
