Background: Therapeutic advances in acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) have transformed it into today's most curable form of leukemia. However, recommended agents, including arsenic trioxide, idarubicin, or daunorubicin, are not easily available in low-middle-income countries, where outcomes remain suboptimal. We aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of more accessible anthracyclines.

It is undeniable that a significant number of patients who want to improve their facial appearance is increasingly interested in nonsurgical procedures. Without a doubt, the use of autologous fat could not be left out as a magnificent alternative for nasal modeling simply because of four influential factors: ease of collection, compatibility, the temporality of the results, and safety. This work describes an innovative alternative technique for nasal modeling using micrografts enriched with adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs).

Alopecia is a common feature in several autoimmune diseases. With a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, it may manifest with a scarring or non-scarring nature, in a diffuse, patchy, or localized pattern. We as dermatologists have the opportunity of assessing patients with hair loss who may have an underlying undiagnosed autoimmune disorder.

The degree to which COVID-19 severity influences the development of acute cerebrovascular events (ACVE) is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to describe the prevalence and risk of ACVE in patients with severe and nonsevere COVID-19. We systematically reviewed MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and Scopus and identified observational and interventional studies of patients with COVID-19 allocated by respiratory severity that reported ACVE development.

Introduction: Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is most commonly presented in older adults; however, it appears 10 years earlier in Latin American countries. Clinical evolution in older adults from this populations has not been characterized. We analyzed outcomes and survival predictors.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and progression to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) result as a consequence of diverse conditions, mainly unbalanced diets. Particularly, high-fat and cholesterol content, as well as carbohydrates, such as those commonly ingested in Western countries, frequently drive adverse metabolic alterations in the liver and promote NAFLD development. Lipid liver overload is also one of the main risk factors for initiation and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), but detailed knowledge on the relevance of high nutritional cholesterol remains elusive.

Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a heterogeneous disease with an unpredictable course. Chronicity can develop in up to two-thirds of adults and 20-25% of children, representing a significant burden on patients' quality of life. Despite acceptable responses to treatment, precise etiology and pathophysiology phenomena driving evolution to chronicity remain undefined.

Primary immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is an intriguing autoimmune disease characterized by autoantibodies against platelets and megakaryocytes. Clinical outcomes, response to treatment, and chronicity predictors were investigated. Patients with newly diagnosed primary ITP treated at a hematology referral center from 2008 to 2018 with complete medical and recent medication history were stratified by age as children < 16 years and adults > 16 years.

Juvenile-onset systemic lupus erythematosus (JSLE) presents with an aggressive course and high morbidity associated with disease and treatment. JSLE patients have a poorer health-related quality of life (HRQoL) when compared with age-matched patients with other rheumatologic disorders. We aim to summarize the impact of current pharmacological therapies on the HRQoL of JSLE patients.

Lumbar puncture (LP) is a hematology procedure that can require repeated attempts leading to traumatic LP (TLP), which has been related to the central nervous system (CNS) relapse. LP success can depend on the size and anatomy of the patient and the skill of the hematologist. The main objective was to determine the influence of body mass index (BMI) on LP outcomes.

Background: Oxidative stress and the inflammatory process are involved in ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Juglans mollis has been reported as having antioxidant activity, which could attenuate the damage caused by I/R. We evaluated whether a methanolic extract of Juglans mollis (JM) exhibits nephroprotective activity in a Wistar rat model of I/R injury.

Background: Warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia (w-AIHA) is an uncommon disease with heterogeneous response to treatment. Steroids are the standard treatment at diagnosis, whereas rituximab has recently been recommended as the second-line therapy of choice. Our main objective was to document the response to treatment in patients with newly diagnosed w-AIHA, including the effectiveness of low-dose rituximab as frontline treatment and for refractory disease.

Background: Renal diseases represent a major public health problem. The demonstration that maladaptive repair of acute kidney injury (AKI) can lead to the development of chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease has generated interest in studying the pathophysiological pathways involved. Animal models of AKI-CKD transition represent important tools to study this pathology.

Introduction And Objectives: Chronic liver inflammation may lead to hepatic cirrhosis, limiting its regenerative capacity. The clinical standard of care is transplantation, although stem cell therapy may be an alternative option. The study aim was to induce endogenous hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) with granulocyte colony stimulating factor (G-CSF) and/or intravenous administration of adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to decrease hepatic fibrosis in an experimental model.

Background: Shared decision making (SDM) is a patient-centered approach in which clinicians and patients work together to find and choose the best course of action for each patient's particular situation. Six SDM key elements can be identified: situation diagnosis, choice awareness, option clarification, discussion of harms and benefits, deliberation of patient preferences, and making the decision. The International Patient Decision Aid Standards (IPDAS) require that a decision aid (DA) support these key elements.
