Amoxicillin functionalized gold nanoparticles reverts MRSA resistance.

In this study, we have described the biosynthesis of biocompatible gold nanoparticles (GNPs) from aqueous extract of the aerial parts of a pteridophyte, "Adiantum philippense" by microwave irradiation and its surface functionalization with broad spectrum beta lactam antibiotic, amoxicillin (Amox). The functionalization of amoxicillin on GNPs (GNP-Amox) was carried out via electrostatic interaction of protonated amino group and thioether moiety mediated attractive forces. The synthesized GNPs and GNP-Amox were physicochemically characterized.

Synchronous primary cancers in the head and neck region and upper aero digestive tract: Role of triple endoscopy.

Background: Patients with cancers in the head and region are at increased risk of developing synchronous primary cancers.

Aim: The aim of this study is to see the role of endoscopy in the pre-therapeutic works-up of patients with the cancers in the head and neck region.

Esophageal cancer is a major global health burden with a strong host-environment interaction component and epigenomics underpinnings that remain to be elucidated further. Certain populations such as the Northeast Indians suffer at a disproportionately higher rate from this devastating disease. Promoter methylation is correlated with transcriptional silencing of various genes in esophageal cancer.

Alcohol and Tobacco Increases Risk of High Risk HPV Infection in Head and Neck Cancer Patients: Study from North-East Region of India.

Background: Human papilloma virus (HPV) associated Head and Neck Cancers (HNCs) have generated significant amount of research interest in recent times. Due to high incidence of HNCs and lack of sufficient data on high-risk HPV (hr-HPV) infection from North -East region of India, this study was conceived to investigate hr-HPV infection, its types and its association with life style habits such as tobacco, alcohol consumption etc.

Methods: A total of one hundred and six primary HNC tumor biopsy specimens were collected.

Background: The survival of patients with hypopharyngeal cancer is low amongst head and neck cancer cases. The incidence rates of hypopharyngeal cancers in our population are amongst the highest in the world and there are limited data available on the literature on varied responses to first course of treatment with radiotherapy (RT) and concurrent chemo-radiotherapy (CRT) in our population.

Materials And Methods: Clinical characteristics and initial responses to treatment in patients who had received radiotherapy and chemo-radiotherapy in a regional cancer center from January 2010 to December 2013 were evaluated.

A Pilot Study on Factors Associated with Presentation Delay in Patients Affected with Head and Neck Cancers.

Chloramphenicol is a well-known broad-spectrum bacteriostatic antibiotic that has been used since 1949, but due to its hydrophobicity, poor penetration in skin, fast degradation, and toxicity, its application has been hindered.

Association of educational levels with survival in Indian patients with cancer of the uterine cervix.

The main objective of this paper was to assess the influence of educational level on the survival of uterine cervix cancer patients in our population. A total of 224 patients were registered in our registry, of which 178 had information on stage and different educational levels. The overall median survival (MS) was 23 months, with values of 18.

Adult non Hodgkin's lymphoma patients: experience from a tertiary care cancer centre in north east India.

There is paucity of data on non Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL) from our population in North-East India. In this retrospective study, patients were consecutively followed-up to see the clinic-pathological pattern of NHL, various responses, and pattern of relapses to first line treatment with chemotherapy. All patients in the present study received standard regimen of cyclophosphamde, doxorubicin, vincristine, prednisolone (CHOP) with or without rituximab (R-CHOP) as per our institutional protocol as first line therapy.

Expression of aberrant CD markers in acute leukemia: a study of 100 cases with immunophenotyping by multiparameter flowcytometry.

Background: Acute leukemia is a heterogenous disease having diverse phenotypes. Immunophenotyping by flowcytometry is essential for diagnosis of myeloid and lymphoid subtypes. Aberrant phenotype incidence is controversial and dissimilar results have been reported by different groups.

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in advanced epithelial ovarian cancer: A survival study.

Context: Patients with advanced ovarian cancer have a poor prognosis in spite of the best possible care. Primary debulking surgery has been the standard of care in advanced ovarian cancer; however, it is associated with high mortality and morbidity rates as shown in various studies. Several studies have discussed the benefit of neoadjuvant chemotherapy in patients with advanced ovarian cancer.

Isolated bony metastasis to upper limb from carcinoma of the oesophagus: report of three cases.

Carcinoma of the oesophagus metastasizes to distant sites in approximately one third of cases and rarely involves the upper limb bones. We describe three such rare cases of isolated metastasis to upper limb bone from oesophageal cancer.

Characteristics of oral tongue and base of the tongue cancer: a hospital cancer registry based analysis.

Background: Tongue cancer is one of the leading sites of cancer in our population.

Aim: To evaluate the socio-demographic profiles and stages at diagnosis of oral tongue (OT) and base of tongue (BT) cancers, and identify any possible variations in characteristics.

Materials And Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on tongue cancer cases, divided into OT and BT, registered at the hospital cancer registry of North-East India during January 2010 to May 2013.

Cutaneous metastasis from squamous carcinoma of the base of tongue.

Context: Cutaneous metastasis from head and neck cancer is uncommon and it is seen from laryngeal cancer. Cutaneous metastasis from the base of tongue is relatively rare.

Case Report: A 55-year-old male, who was a treated case of squamous carcinoma of the base of tongue presented with metastatic nodule on the skin of face and thigh.

Community based intervention for tobacco cessation: a pilot study experience, north East India.

Background: North East India has a high prevalence of tobacco consumption, but only few individualsseek help for tobacco cessation. Impact of community based tobacco cessation intervention in this part needs more research.

Materials And Methods: Retrospective analysis was done on the dataset from a community-based tobacco cessation intervention pilot project conducted in Guwahati metro during 2009-10.

Descriptive epidemiology of common female cancers in the north East India--a hospital based study.

Background: Cancers of the breast, uterine cervix and ovary are common cancers amongst females of North East India. Not much is known about the descriptive epidemiology of these cancers in our population. The present retrospective analysis was therefore performed.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor of the upper alveolus: A rare entity presenting as a jaw swelling.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare tumor of borderline nature that can clinically present as a malignant neoplasm. It commonly occurs in the lungs, and a very few oral IMTs have been reported in the literature. IMT consists of inflammatory cells and myofibroblastic spindle cells.

Brief descriptive epidemiology of primary malignant brain tumors from North-East India.

Brain tumors are a mixed group of neoplasms that originate from the intracranial tissues and the meninges with degrees of malignancy varying greatly from benign to aggressive. Not much is known about the epidemiology of primary malignant brain tumors (PMBTs) in our population in North-East India. In this analysis, an attempt was made to identify the age groups, gender distribution, topography and different histological types of PMBT with data from a hospital cancer registry.

Basaloid Squamous Carcinoma of Skin Associated with Xeroderma Pigmentosum in an 8-year-old Child: A Rare Entity.

Xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis associated with hypersensitivity to ultraviolet (UV) light, due to defects in deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) repair. Basaloid squamous cell carcinoma is a rare aggressive variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Patients with XP are at increased risk of developing cutaneous malignancy and are commonly associated with squamous carcinoma.
