Introduction: Abnormalities of the double-layered meniscus are rare and can be difficult to diagnose. The main pathology in this abnormality, which is predominantly seen in the lateral compartment, is an accessory meniscus lying over the normal meniscus. Anatomically, this structure can appear in different forms.

We investigated expressions of PD-L1, LAG-3, TIM-3, and OX40L as immune checkpoint proteins, and MSI (repetitive short-DNA-sequences due to defective DNA-repair system) status were analyzed with immunohistochemistry from tissue blocks. Of 83 patients, PD-L1 expression was observed in 18.1% (n = 15) of the patients.

Background: The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) devices have been used for treating wide neck bifurcation aneurysms (WNBAs) with several generational enhancements to improve clinical outcomes. The original device dual-layer (WEB DL) was replaced by a single-layer (WEB SL) device in 2013. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness and safety of these devices in managing intracranial aneurysms.

Central nervous system (CNS) metastases can be seen at a rate of 30% in advanced stages for patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Growing evidence indicates the predictive roles of driver gene mutations in the development of brain metastases (BM) in recent years, meaning that oncogene-driven NSCLC have a high incidence of BM at diagnosis. Today, 3rd generation targeted drugs with high intracranial efficacy, which can cross the blood-brain barrier, have made a positive contribution to survival for these patients with an increased propensity to BM.

The Added-value of Staging F-FDG PET/CT in the Prediction of Overall Survival in the Patients with Bladder Cancer.

Mol Imaging Radionucl Ther

February 2024

University of Health Sciences Türkiye, Ankara Dr. Abdurrahman Yurtaslan Oncology Training and Research Hospital, Clinic of Nuclear Medicine, Ankara, Türkiye.

Objectives: This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the prognostic importance of F-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG)-positive pelvic lymph nodes (LNs) and extra-pelvic disease on staging F-FDG positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) in patients with bladder cancer.

Methods: Bladder cancer patients who underwent staging F-FDG PET/CT were included in the study. Histopathologic features of tumors, therapy histories, presence of distinguishable tumors on CT and PET images, sizes and maximum standardized uptake value (SUV) of primary tumors, total numbers, sizes, and SUV of F-FDG-positive pelvic and extra-pelvic LNs, and total numbers and SUV of distant metastases (M1a/1b) were recorded.

Objective: The rate of cardiovascular disease is increasing in developed countries progressively with estimates predicting 22 million by 2030. Based on these cardiovascular events lies atherosclerosis, a condition intricately linked to chronic inflammatory processes. Among fundamental clinical biomarkers, C-reactive protein (CRP) stands out as a backbone of inflammatory activity.

Objective: Postoperative sore throat (POST) is the most common discomfort after endotracheal intubation. Damage to the tracheal mucosa caused by inappropriate endotracheal tube (ETT) cuff pressure has been shown as the major factor. Monitoring the ETT cuff pressure at a certain value reduces this damage.

Article Synopsis
  • The Woven EndoBridge (WEB) device is effective for treating intracranial aneurysms, yet the postoperative use of aspirin shows varied practices among clinicians.
  • A multicenter study involving 1492 patients compared outcomes between those who took aspirin post-surgery and those who didn't, revealing that aspirin users had better functional outcomes and lower mortality rates but higher rates of retreatment.
  • The findings suggest that while aspirin may improve recovery and reduce death rates after WEB treatment, it also increases the likelihood of needing additional procedures, indicating a need for further research on optimal postoperative care.

Antimicrobial Activity of Ceragenins against Vancomycin-Susceptible and -Resistant spp.

Pharmaceuticals (Basel)

November 2023

Department of Pharmaceutical Microbiology, Faculty of Pharmacy, Istanbul University, Istanbul 34116, Turkey.

Ceragenins (CSAs) are a new class of antimicrobial agents designed to mimic the activities of endogenous antimicrobial peptides. In this study, the antibacterial activities of various ceragenins (CSA-13, CSA-44, CSA-90, CSA-131, CSA-138, CSA-142, and CSA-192), linezolid, and daptomycin were assessed against 50 non-repeated spp. (17 of them vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus-VRE) isolated from various clinical specimens.

Background: Erdheim Chester disease (ECD) is a rare disease with multisystemic involvement in the group of non-langerhans cell histiocytosis. Although nearly 100 years have passed since its definition, the number of cases reported all over the world is below 1000. In addition to the rarity of the disease, low awareness seems to play a role in this.

Percutaneous ablation treatment in metastatic lung tumors: a single-center experience.

Acta Radiol

August 2023

Department of Radiology, Diskapi Yildirim Beyazit Training and Research Hospital, University of Health Sciences, Ankara, Turkey.

Background: In recent years, many studies have proven that percutaneous thermal ablation is an effective second-line treatment method with low complication rates in early-stage non-small cell lung carcinoma and lung metastases. Radiofrequency ablation and microwave ablation are commonly used for this purpose.

Purpose: To evaluate the factors affecting the success of the percutaneous thermal ablation treatment with technical success, complication rates, and long-term follow-up results in metastatic lung lesions.

Background: Clinical care of patients with cancer mostly focuses on medical management with less attention on disease-related malnutrition. The Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) released new criteria for diagnosing malnutrition, but the validation of these criteria in treatment-naïve patients with cancer is not well documented. This study aimed to investigate the application of the GLIM criteria in nutrition assessment and mortality prediction in treatment-naïve patients with cancer.
