Prostate cancer is the most invasive and frequently occurred cancer in men. In the initial stages, it is androgen dependent and the androgen ablation therapy is effective at this stage. In the final stages, it becomes androgen-independent and is unresponsive to androgen ablation therapy.

Effect of methanol intoxication on specific immune functions of albino rats.

Our previous studies revealed that methanol intoxication significantly altered the non-specific immune functions in albino rats. The present investigation focuses on the effect of methanol on certain specific immune functions of cell mediated immunity such as footpad thickness, leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMI) and antibody levels. In addition, serum interleukins (IL-2, IL-4, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma), and splenic lymphocyte subsets were measured after an immune challenge.

Stress response in rat brain after different durations of noise exposure.

The alteration in the levels of plasma corticosterone, brain norepinephrine (NE), and expression of brain heat shock proteins (Hsp70) after different durations of noise exposure (acute, 1 day; sub-acute, 15 days; chronic, 30 days) has been studied to analyze their role in combating time-dependent stress effects of noise. Broadband white noise (100dB) exposure to male Wistar albino rats significantly increased the levels of plasma corticosterone and NE in all three durations of noise exposure. The sustained increase observed in their levels in the chronic group suggests that animals are not getting adapted to noise even after 30 days of exposure.

Role of alpha-tocopherol on antioxidant status in liver, lung and kidney of PCB exposed male albino rats.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are widespread, lipophilic environmental pollutants which have been identified as contaminants in almost every component of the global ecosystem including fish, wildlife, and human adipose tissue, breast milk, and serum. Several studies have shown that PCBs can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, in the form of lipid peroxidation, modulation of antioxidant enzymes, and oxidative stress. In the present study, we have sought to investigate the effects of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) on antioxidant status of PCB-induced toxicity in male Wistar rats.

Diethylhexyl phthalate impairs insulin binding and glucose oxidation in Chang liver cells.

The present study examined the dose-dependent effects of diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) on insulin receptor concentration and glucose oxidation in Chang liver cells. Chang liver cells (5 x 10(5) cells) were exposed to different concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 microM) of DEHP for 24h. At the end of exposure, cells were utilized for assessing insulin receptor concentration and glucose oxidation.

Detection of pulmonary Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections in HIV-infected subjects using culture and serology.

Objective: The true prevalence of Mycoplasma pneumoniae infections involving the respiratory tracts of HIV-infected individuals is still unclear. This study examined the prevalence of M. pneumoniae in 100 HIV-infected individuals at an AIDS care center in Chennai, India, using conventional laboratory techniques and interpretation criteria.

Pneumonia and pleural effusion due to Cryptococcus laurentii in a clinically proven case of AIDS.

Non-neoformans cryptococci were previously considered to be saprophytes and nonpathogenic to humans. Cryptococcus laurentii is frequently used as a biological means to control fruit rot. Interestingly, C laurentii has recently been reported to be a rare cause of infection in humans.

The vulnerability of the nervous system due to methanol (MeOH) intoxication is a well known fact and reports on the production of free radicals due to MeOH exposure and their involvement in excitotoxicity and neuronal apoptosis are being increasingly reported. We report on MeOH induced free radical changes and oxidative damages to proteins in the discrete regions of rat brain, retina and optic nerve. The present study used rats administered with methotrexate (MTX) to induce folate deficiency.

Serotonin turnover in different duration of sleep recovery in discrete regions of young rat brain after 24 h REM sleep deprivation.

Sleep plays an important role in restorative function and serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine: 5HT) equally plays important roles in sleep. Though various studies have revealed the roles of 5HT in sleep/wake cycle, the mechanism involved is yet unclear. In the present study we investigated alteration of the 5HT turnover in various regions of the young rat brains after 24 hours (h) REM sleep (sREM) deprivation to elucidate the roles of 5HT in sleep restoration function in the these regions.

Garlic compound, diallyl disulfide induces cell cycle arrest in prostate cancer cell line PC-3.

Prostate cancer is the most predominant cancer in men and related death rate increases every year. Till date, there is no effective therapy for androgen independent prostate cancer. Previous studies reported that aged garlic extract suppresses cancer growth.

Radiation exposure impairs luteinizing hormone signal transduction and steroidogenesis in cultured human leydig cells.

Therapeutic, accidental, and experimental radiation exposures decreased serum testosterone in males, leading to various sexual problems. Since testicular Leydig cells are the predominant source of circulating testosterone, findings on the direct effects of radiation on Leydig cell steroidogenesis and the mechanism behind such effects would be of greater importance to the use of safer radiation doses in cancer therapy and to adopt preventive or therapeutic measures to alleviate postirradiation lesions, respectively. Therefore, this study was undertaken to explore the same using cultured human Leydig cells.

Effect of methanol-induced oxidative stress on the neuroimmune system of experimental rats.

It is well known that the nervous system has increased susceptibility to methanol intoxication. The present study reveals the effect of methanol intoxication on antioxidant status, lipid peroxidation and DNA integrity in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis organs and spleen. Non-specific and specific immune functions were analyzed.

Plumbago zeylanica action on blood coagulation profile with and without blood volume reduction.

Plumbago zeylanica (PZ) is extensively used in Indian systems of medicine for its medicinal properties. The structure of its active principle is similar to that of vitamin K. Its effect on blood coagulation profile after chronic administration has not been reported so far.

Methanol-induced oxidative stress in rat lymphoid organs.

Methanol is primarily metabolized by oxidation to formaldehyde and then to formate. These processes are accompanied by formation of superoxide anion and hydrogen peroxide. This paper reports data on the effect of methanol on antioxidant status and lipid peroxidation in lymphoid organs such as the spleen, thymus, lymph nodes and bone marrow of rats.

Effects of chronic noise stress on spatial memory of rats in relation to neuronal dendritic alteration and free radical-imbalance in hippocampus and medial prefrontal cortex.

Spatial memory is coordinated with different brain regions especially hippocampus (HIP) and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Influence of noise stress on working and reference memory error in rats was evaluated by radial eight-arm maze experiment. Changes in the dendritic count were observed in the brain regions such as CA1, CA3 regions of HIP and layers II, III of mPFC.

Serotonin turnover in discrete regions of young rat brain after 24 h REM sleep deprivation.

The present study has attempted to elucidate the alteration of serotonin turnover after 24 h REM sleep deprivation in different regions in brain of young rat. Sleep deprivation was induced by the inverted flower pot technique. Results of this study show increased serotonin turnover after 24 h REM sleep deprivation in all the brain regions except in the hypothalamus.

Chemoprevention of rat prostate carcinogenesis by diallyl disulfide, an organosulfur compound of garlic.

Diallyl disulfide (DADS), an important component of garlic (Allium sativam) has been demonstrated to exert a potential chemopreventive activity against human cancers. DADS inhibits proliferation of both androgen dependent and independent prostate cancer cells in vitro. However there is no report available on the role of DADS on prostate cancer initiation in in vivo model.

Effect of Triphala on oxidative stress and on cell-mediated immune response against noise stress in rats.

Stress is one of the basic factors in the etiology of number of diseases. The present study was aimed to investigate the effect of Triphala (Terminalia chebula, Terminalia belerica and Emblica officinalis) on noise-stress induced alterations in the antioxidant status and on the cell-mediated immune response in Wistar strain male albino rats. Noise-stress employed in this study was 100 dB for 4 h/d/15 days and Triphala was used at a dose of 1 g/kg/b.

Serosurveillance of acute Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection among HIV infected patients with pulmonary complaints in Chennai, Southern India.

Background: The true seroepidemiology of acute Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection in HIV infected individuals is ambiguous.

Methods: This study examined the serosurveillance of IgM antibodies to M. pneumoniae in HIV infected patients presenting with pulmonary symptoms at a tertiary AIDS care center in Chennai, Southern India, using cold-haemagglutination test and commercial enzyme linked immunosorbent assay in acute serum specimens.

Effects of gamma radiation on luteinizing hormone (LH) receptor expression, signal transduction and steroidogenesis in cultured rat Leydig cells.

Purpose: To investigate the dose-dependent effects of gamma radiation on rat Leydig cell luteinizing hormone (LH) receptor expression, signal transduction and steroidogenesis.

Materials And Methods: Leydig cells isolated from testicles of adult male albino rats were cultured and exposed to different doses (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 Gy) of fractioned gamma radiation for three days. Normal as well as irradiated cells were used for the quantification of cell surface LH receptor or LH/cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) stimulation test or total ribonucleic acid (RNA) isolation to study the LH receptor messenger RNA (mRNA) expression by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).

Bacterial etiology of diabetic foot infections in South India.

Background: Foot infections are a frequent complication of patients with diabetes mellitus, accounting for up to 20% of diabetes-related hospital admissions. Infectious agents are associated with the worst outcomes, which may ultimately lead to amputation of the infected foot unless prompt treatment strategies are ensued. The present study sought to reveal the bacterial etiology of diabetic foot ulcers in South India, the diabetic capital of India.

Phenotypes of isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in a diabetes care center.

Background: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is an invasive organism that frequently causes severe tissue damage in diabetic foot ulcers. A major problem in P. aeruginosa infection may be that this pathogen exhibits a high degree of resistance to a broad spectrum of antibiotics.

Cytokines and leptin correlation in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome: Biochemical evaluation in south Indian population.

In polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), the leptin (OB protein) is related to reproductive function and inflammatory response. Leptin and cytokines have been thought to be putative local regulators in PCOS. To examine the relationship between serum leptin and serum interleukin-6 (IL-6), interleukin-8 (IL-8) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α) levels in underweight, overweight, obese and morbidly obese PCOS and non-PCOS subjects compared with normal weight, regularly menstruating women.

Antioxidant property of alpha-asarone against noise-stress-induced changes in different regions of rat brain.

Free radicals and other reactive species are considered to be an important causative factor in the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Recent reports have indicated that exposure to loud noise generates excess oxygen free radicals (OFR) in the brain. Antioxidant properties of medicinal plants are attracting more and more research in medicine, to counteract OFR and to minimize the neurodegenerative processes.
