Our previous studies revealed that methanol intoxication significantly altered the non-specific immune functions in albino rats. The present investigation focuses on the effect of methanol on certain specific immune functions of cell mediated immunity such as footpad thickness, leukocyte migration inhibition test (LMI) and antibody levels. In addition, serum interleukins (IL-2, IL-4, TNF-alpha and IFN-gamma), and splenic lymphocyte subsets were measured after an immune challenge.

The alteration in the levels of plasma corticosterone, brain norepinephrine (NE), and expression of brain heat shock proteins (Hsp70) after different durations of noise exposure (acute, 1 day; sub-acute, 15 days; chronic, 30 days) has been studied to analyze their role in combating time-dependent stress effects of noise. Broadband white noise (100dB) exposure to male Wistar albino rats significantly increased the levels of plasma corticosterone and NE in all three durations of noise exposure. The sustained increase observed in their levels in the chronic group suggests that animals are not getting adapted to noise even after 30 days of exposure.

Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) are widespread, lipophilic environmental pollutants which have been identified as contaminants in almost every component of the global ecosystem including fish, wildlife, and human adipose tissue, breast milk, and serum. Several studies have shown that PCBs can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, in the form of lipid peroxidation, modulation of antioxidant enzymes, and oxidative stress. In the present study, we have sought to investigate the effects of alpha-tocopherol (vitamin E) on antioxidant status of PCB-induced toxicity in male Wistar rats.

The present study examined the dose-dependent effects of diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP) on insulin receptor concentration and glucose oxidation in Chang liver cells. Chang liver cells (5 x 10(5) cells) were exposed to different concentrations (0, 50, 100, 200 and 400 microM) of DEHP for 24h. Therapeutic, accidental, and experimental radiation exposures decreased serum testosterone in males, leading to various sexual problems. Since testicular Leydig cells are the predominant source of circulating testosterone, findings on the direct effects of radiation on Leydig cell steroidogenesis and the mechanism behind such effects would be of greater importance to the use of safer radiation doses in cancer therapy and to adopt preventive or therapeutic measures to alleviate postirradiation lesions, respectively. Therefore, this study was undertaken to explore the same using cultured human Leydig cells.

The present study has attempted to elucidate the alteration of serotonin turnover after 24 h REM sleep deprivation in different regions in brain of young rat. Sleep deprivation was induced by the inverted flower pot technique. Results of this study show increased serotonin turnover after 24 h REM sleep deprivation in all the brain regions except in the hypothalamus.

Purpose: To investigate the dose-dependent effects of gamma radiation on rat Leydig cell luteinizing hormone (LH) receptor expression, signal transduction and steroidogenesis.
Materials And Methods: Leydig cells isolated from testicles of adult male albino rats were cultured and exposed to different doses (2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 Gy) of fractioned gamma radiation for three days. Normal as well as irradiated cells were used for the quantification of cell surface LH receptor or LH/cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) stimulation test or total ribonucleic acid (RNA) isolation to study the LH receptor messenger RNA (mRNA) expression by reverse transcriptase polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR).
