Youth diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and those with developmental coordination disorder (DCD) are at heightened risk for co-occurring mental health diagnoses, especially anxiety and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, caregiver-child agreement on presence of related symptoms in populations with neurodevelopmental conditions is not well understood. Here, we examine the extent to which 37 ASD, 26 DCD, and 40 typically developing children and their caregivers agree on the degree of the child's symptoms of anxiety and ADHD.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a five-year survival rate of less than 10% due to its late diagnosis, rapid metastasis, and chemotherapeutic resistance. For a small proportion (10-20%) of early-stage patients however, surgical resection of the pancreatic tumor offers the best chance for survival but the effect of surgery on disease dissemination is unknown. The primary objective of this study was to characterize cellular and acellular blood-based analytes in portal and peripheral blood before pancreatic manipulation, during tumor dissection and immediately after surgical resection to determine the effects of the surgery.

Liquid biopsy approach to monitor the efficacy and response to CAR-T cell therapy.

J Immunother Cancer

February 2024

Convergent Science Institute in Cancer, Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, California, USA

Background: Chimeric antigen receptor (CAR)-T cells are approved for use in the treatment of hematological malignancies. Axicabtagene ciloleucel (YESCARTA) and brexucabtagene autoleucel (TECARTUS) genetically modified autologous T cells expressing an anti-CD19 scFv based on the FMC63 clone have shown impressive response rates for the treatment of CD19+B cell malignancies, but there remain challenges in monitoring long-term persistence as well as the functional characterization of low-level persisting CAR-T cells in patients. Furthermore, due to CD19-negative driven relapse, having the capability to monitor patients with simultaneous detection of the B cell malignancy and persisting CAR-T cells in patient peripheral blood is important for ensuring timely treatment optionality and understanding relapse.

Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) is a technique that analyzes the metabolic state of tissues based on the spatial distribution of fluorescence lifetimes of certain interacting molecules. We used multiphoton FLIM to study the metabolic state of developing C57BL6/J and rd10 retinas based on the fluorescence lifetimes of free versus bound nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAD(P)H), with free NAD(P)H percentages suggesting increased glycolysis and bound NAD(P)H percentages indicating oxidative phosphorylation. The mice were sacrificed and enucleated at various time points throughout their first 3 months of life.

The ubiquity of 'self-care' in health: Why specificity matters.

Glob Public Health

January 2024

Institute on Inequalities in Global Health, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

Despite increased interest in self-care for health, little consensus exists around its definition and scope. The World Health Organization has published several definitions of self-care, including in a 2019 Global Guideline rooted in sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), later expanded to encompass health more generally. To establish a robust understanding of self-care, this exploratory study inventorises, consolidates, presents and analyses definitions of self-care beyond the SRHR field.
