The objective of this study was to evaluate anti-obesity effects of kimchi microbial community (KMC) on obesity and gut microbiota using a high fat diet-induced mouse model compared to effects of a single strain. Administration of KMC decreased body weight, adipose tissue, and liver weight gains. Relative content of Muribaculaceae in the gut of the KMC-treated group was higher than that in the high-fat diet (HFD) group whereas relative contents of Akkermansiaceae, Coriobacteriaceae, and Erysipelotrichaceae were lower in KMC-treated group.

The purpose of this study was to understand the changes of metabolic pathway induced by alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone (α-MSH) in B16F10 melanoma cells in an untargeted metabolomics approach. Cells were treated with 100 nM of α-MSH and then incubated for 48 h. α-MSH increased tyrosinase activity and melanin content by 56.

Background: Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) refers to all cognitive disorders caused by cerebrovascular disorders. For the treatment, many types of pharmacologic and nonpharmacologic treatments are used but their underlying mechanisms and effects are unclear. Regarding nonpharmacologic treatment, electroacupuncture (EA), transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), and computerized cognitive rehabilitation treatment (CCRT) are effective.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), a major histologic type of esophageal cancer, is one of the frequent causes of cancer-related death worldwide. Picropodophyllotoxin (PPT) is the main component of root with antitumor activity via apoptosis-mediated mechanisms in several cancer cells. However, the underlying mechanism of the PPT effects in apoptosis induction in cancer remains ambiguous.

Article Synopsis
  • Socheongryongtang is a traditional Korean remedy studied for its effects on pulmonary diseases, particularly COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease).
  • In research involving BALB/c mice, it was found that socheongryongtang significantly reduced inflammatory markers such as WBC levels, neutrophils, and several COPD-related cytokines and chemokines compared to a control group treated with LPS.
  • The findings suggest that socheongryongtang has potential therapeutic effects not only for COPD but also for other respiratory diseases, warranting further investigation.

Article Synopsis
  • Chronic inflammation is linked to various diseases, including cancer and autoimmune disorders, with a high associated mortality rate, but common culinary ingredients like Curcuma longa (turmeric) and Allium hookeri (wild garlic) have shown some anti-inflammatory properties.
  • This study investigated the combined effects of C. longa and A. hookeri to create a more effective anti-inflammatory treatment, determining the ideal ratio of 3:7 for optimal results.
  • The co-treatment significantly reduced inflammatory markers and improved skin conditions by influencing the NF-κB/COX-2 pathway and inhibiting iNOS, suggesting a promising new approach for managing inflammation.

Esophageal cancer (EC) is one of the leading causes to cancer death in the worldwide and major population of EC is esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Still, ESCC-targeted therapy has not been covered yet. In the present study we have identified that Licochalcone B (Lico B) inhibited the ESCC growth by directly blocking the Janus kinase (JAK) 2 activity and its downstream signaling pathway.

Introduction: A considerable number of insomnia patients experience sleep disturbance even with long-term use of hypnotic medication. Previous studies have indicated that electroacupuncture (EA) could be an efficacious treatment for managing insomnia. However, few trials have been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of EA for treatment-resistant insomnia.

Background: Evidence for the add-on effect of kinesiotape (KT) with acupuncture for treating ankle sprains remains insufficient. We assessed the add-on effect of KT on ankle sprains by comparing acupuncture combined with KT (AcuKT) with acupuncture alone in patients with acute lateral ankle sprain (ALAS).

Methods: This study was a multicenter, randomized controlled clinical trial that included a per-protocol analysis of the add-on effect of KT on ALAS.

This study investigated the synergistic effects of scalp acupuncture (SA) and repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS), known to be effective for cerebral infarction. This outcome-assessor-blinded, randomized controlled clinical trial included a per-protocol analysis to compare the efficacy of SA and electromagnetic convergence stimulation (SAEM-CS) and single or no stimulation. The trial was conducted with 42 cerebral infarction patients (control group, 12; SA group, 11; rTMS group, 8; SAEM-CS group, 11).

Neoagarooligosaccharides (NAOS) are generated by β-agarases, which cleave the β-1,4 linkage in agarose. Previously, we reported that NAOS inhibited fat accumulation in the liver and decreased serum cholesterol levels. However, the hepatoprotective effect of NAOS on acute liver injury has not yet been investigated.

Potential biomarkers and antagonists for fluoranthene-induced cellular toxicity of bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells.

Blood Res

December 2019

Department of Laboratory Medicine and Mitochondrial Research Laboratory, Chonnam National University Medical School, Chonnam National University Hwasun Hospital, Hwasun, Korea.

Background: Fluoranthene (FR) is a common environmental pollutant that exists in a complex mixture with other polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). We identified biomarkers for monitoring FR exposure and investigated the rescue effect of FR-induced cellular toxicity via aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) antagonist activity in bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs).

Methods: Morphological changes, viability, and rescue effects of an AHR antagonist (CH223191) were examined in BM-MSCs after exposure to FR.
