Background: Circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and survivin are indicators for tumor stage and metastasis, as well as epitheliomesenchymal transition, in various cancers, including hepatocellular cancer (HCC).
Aim: To explore the potential of survivin-positive CTCs, specifically, as a marker for tumor progression in HCC patients.
Methods: We examined the survivin expression pattern in CTCs obtained from 179 HCC patients, and investigated the effects of survivin silencing and overexpression on the proliferation and invasion of HCC cells.

Background: In general, given the insufficient sample size, considerable literature has been found on single studies of diabetes and hypertension and few studies have been found on the coexistence of diabetes and hypertension (CDH) and its influencing factors with a large range of samples. This study aimed to establish a structural equation model for exploring the direct and indirect relationships amongst sociodemographic characteristics, lifestyle, obesity, and CDH amongst Chinese adults.
Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted in a representative sample of 25356 adults between June 1, 2015, and September 30, 2018, in Hubei province, China.

Cancer multidrug resistance (MDR) is existence in stem cell-like cancer cells characterized by stemness including high-proliferation and self-renewal. Programmed cell death 4 (PDCD4), as a proapoptotic gene, whether it engaged in cancer stemness and cisplatin resistance is still unknown. Here we showed that PDCD4 expressions in Hela/DDP (cisplatin resistance) cells were lower than in parental Hela cells.

Background: Gastric cancer is the sixth common malignancy worldwide. Dysregulation of Cell Migration Inducing Hyaluronidase 1 (CEMIP) gene and microRNA-148a -3p (miR-148a-3p) expressions has been found in gastric cancer genesis. However, the underlying molecular mechanism in gastric cancer needs further investigation.

Antibiotic-resistant ESKAPE pathogens (, , , , , and ) has become a serious threat to public health worldwide. Cationic α-helical antimicrobial peptides (CαAMPs) have attracted much attention as promising solutions in post-antibiotic era. However, strong hemolytic activity and inefficacy have hindered their pharmaceutical development.

The 1-year mortality and health consequences of COVID-19 in cancer patients are relatively underexplored. In this multicenter cohort study, 166 COVID-19 patients with cancer were compared with 498 non-cancer COVID-19 patients and 498 non-COVID cancer patients. The 1-year all-cause mortality and hospital mortality rates in Cancer COVID-19 Cohort (30% and 20%) were significantly higher than those in COVID-19 Cohort (9% and 8%, both P < .

Aims: Neointimal hyperplasia remains a major obstacle in vascular regeneration. Sca-1-positive progenitor cells residing within the vascular adventitia play a crucial role in the assemblage of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) and the formation of the intimal lesion. However, the underlying mechanisms during vascular injury are still unknown.

Objective: To investigate the effect of fatty acid synthase (FASN) gene silencing on lipid metabolism and biological behaviors of human hepatoblastoma HepG2 cells.
Objective: Small interfering RNA (siRNA) targeting FASN gene or a negative control siRNA sequence (NC-siRNA) was transfected into HepG2 cells, and the gene silencing efficiency was evaluated with qRT-PCR and Western blotting. Triglyceride level in the cells was detected using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, and Oil red O staining was performed to examine intracellular lipid droplets.

Scorpion venoms are rich resources of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs). While the short-chain noncysteine-containing AMPs have attracted much attention as templates for drug development, the antimicrobial potential of long-chain noncysteine-containing AMPs has been largely overlooked. Here, by using the online HeliQuest server, we designed and analyzed a series of 14-residue fragments of Smp43, a 43-residue long-chain noncysteine-containing AMP identified from the venom of .

Carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is becoming a troublesome issue worldwide, and anti-CRAB drug research and development is urgently needed. To identify new anti-CRAB drug leads, we investigated seven scorpion venom-derived α-helical peptides that differ in their sequence composition and length. Three peptides, Hp1404, ctriporin and Im5, showed antimicrobial activities against Acinetobacter baumannii.

Diabetic nephropathy (DN), a frequent diabetes complication, has complex pathogenesis. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) circ_0000712 has been reported to be upregulated in kidney tissues and high glucose (HG)-inducted Mesangial cells (MCs). This study is designed to explore the role and mechanism of circ_0000712 in the HG-inducted MCs injury in DN.

Previous meta-analysis studies have indicated inverse associations between some carotenoids and risks of metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and all-cause mortality. However, the results for associations between carotenoids and type 2 diabetes (T2D) remain inconsistent and no systematic assessment has been done on this topic. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to examine the associations of dietary intakes and circulating concentrations of carotenoids with risk of T2D.

Background And Aims: Systemic immune-inflammation index (SII) has been recently investigated as a novel inflammatory and prognostic marker. SII may be used as an indicator reflecting the progressive inflammatory process in atherosclerosis, although its link to incident cardiovascular disease (CVD) has not been examined in previous studies. This study aims to prospectively assess the association of SII with incident CVD and its main subtypes in Chinese adults.

Mixed lineage kinase domain-like protein (MLKL) plays an important role in necroptosis, but the role and mechanism of MLKL in intestinal tumorigenesis remain unclear. Here, we found that hematopoietic- and nonhematopoietic-derived MLKL affected intestinal inflammation, but nonhematopoietic-derived MLKL primarily inhibited intestinal tumorigenesis. Loss of MLKL enhanced intestinal regeneration and the susceptibility to intestinal tumorigenesis in mice by hyperactivating the Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/ signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) axis.
