January 2025

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine, The Shanghai Institute of Hypertension, Ruijin Hospital, Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China.

Article Synopsis
  • The May Measurement Month (MMM) China project in 2020 collected blood pressure data from over 100,000 adults during the COVID-19 control period, particularly targeting those who hadn't had their blood pressure measured in the previous year.
  • Blood pressure was consistently measured using an automated monitor across 136 sites in 29 provinces, revealing a mean systolic/diastolic blood pressure of 120.0/76.9 mm Hg and a hypertension prevalence of 28.9%.
  • The study highlighted challenges in managing hypertension, particularly due to increased rates of smoking, alcohol consumption, overweight, and obesity, alongside the unique healthcare pressures posed by the pandemic.

Article Synopsis
  • The study highlights the rising incidence of colorectal cancer (CRC) in China and the importance of early detection through fecal immunochemical testing (FIT) for improving survival rates, especially in Hainan Province.
  • A population-based survey was conducted with 2000 participants aged 40-75, achieving an 89.4% compliance rate for FIT screening, and revealing a 4.4% positivity rate for CRC.
  • The research found significant relationships between positive FIT results and factors such as age and dietary habits, underscoring the need for targeted prevention strategies.

Objective: This study aimed to pinpoint independent predictors influencing overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) in elderly patients with small cell lung cancer (SCLC) brain metastasis (BM), and to create and validate nomograms for OS and CSS prediction.

Methods: Data from elderly SCLC BM patients were extracted out of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database, including 1200 patients identified from 2010 and 2015 who were randomly allocated into a training set and an internal validation set at a proportion of 7:3, and 666 patients diagnosed between 2018 and 2020 as a temporal external validation set. Independent predictors for OS and CSS were determined through univariate Cox analysis, least absolute shrinkage and selection operator analysis, and multivariate Cox analysis sequentially.

polymorphisms (rs2227284, rs2243267, and rs2243270) are associated with reduced risk of rheumatoid arthritis.

Autoimmunity

December 2024

Key Laboratory of High Altitude Hypoxia Environment and Life Health, School of Medicine, Xizang Minzu University, Xianyang, Shaanxi, China.

Background: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease, and understanding its genetic and molecular basis is crucial for early diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.

Objective: This study aims to explore the association between polymorphisms (rs2227284, rs2243267, rs2243270, and rs2243283) and RA risk.

Methods: The four polymorphisms were genotyped in 493 RA patients and 493 healthy controls using Agena MassARRAY.

Immunogenic cell death (ICD) is a newly discovered form of cellular demise that triggers adaptive immune responses mediated by T cells. However, the immunogenic cell death-related lncRNAs (ICDRLs) involved in bladder cancer (BC) development and progression remain to be further elucidated. Molecular profiling data and clinicopathological information for BC patients were obtained from TCGA, and the ICDRGs list was obtained from published literature.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study aimed to examine the types, characteristics, and impact of chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs) while analyzing how sociodemographic factors relate to these diseases through a cross-sectional study of nearly 197,000 medical records from Dongfang in 2021.
  • - Key findings showed that cardiovascular diseases and chronic respiratory diseases were prevalent, with men and older individuals at a higher risk for specific diseases, while unemployed and low-income individuals had varied risks depending on the disease type.
  • - Results indicate that age and gender influence the relationship between job status and the likelihood of experiencing major chronic diseases, highlighting the need for tailored public health strategies.

Distinct non-clock-like signatures of the basal cell carcinomas from three sisters with a lethal Gorlin-Goltz syndrome.

BMC Med Genomics

August 2022

Department of Dermatology, Huashan Hospital, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University, Shanghai, China.

Background: Gorlin-Goltz syndrome (GS) is an inherited disease characterized by predisposition to basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and various developmental defects, whose numerous disease-causing PTCH1 mutations have been identified in the hedgehog (Hh) signaling pathway.

Methods: In this study, whole exome sequencing was used to screen for both somatic and germline deleterious mutations in three sisters with a lethal GS. The mutations we found were confirmed by subcloning and Sanger sequencing of the genomic DNA.
