Early growth response 1 (EGR-1) is a key transcription factor that boosts the inflammatory response. Therefore, targeting EGR-1 with small-molecule drugs may be a novel strategy for treating inflammatory diseases, such as atopic dermatitis. (E)-2-(2,4-dimethoxy-6-(4-methoxystyryl)phenyl)-3-hydroxy-6-nitro-4H-chromen-4-one (AB1711) was previously found to be an active compound that disrupts EGR-1-DNA binding.

The accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) disrupts reduction-oxidation homeostasis, which can result in damage to cancer cells. To identify the compounds generating ROS, compounds containing Michael acceptors were designed because they are suggested to be critical for ROS elevation via glutathione depletion. Twelve (E)-3-(3-([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-1-phenyl-1H-pyrazol-4-yl)-1-phenylprop-2-en-1-ones were synthesized and identified using nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and mass spectrometry.

Exercise not only regulates neurotransmitters and synapse formation but also enhances the function of multiple brain regions, beyond cortical activation. Prolonged aerobic or resistance exercise modality has been widely applied to reveal the beneficial effects on the brain, but few studies have investigated the direct effects of different exercise modalities and variations in exercise intensity on the neuroinflammatory response in the brain and overall health. Therefore, in this study, we investigated changes in brain cells and the immune environment of the brain according to exercise modalities.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a growing health problem worldwide, ranging from non-alcoholic fatty liver (NAFL) to the more severe metabolic non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Although many studies have elucidated the pathogenesis of NAFLD, the epigenetic regulatory mechanism from NAFL to NASH remains incompletely understood. The histone H3 lysine 4 methyltransferase, MLL4 (also called KMT2D), is a critical epigenetic transcriptional coactivator that mediates overnutrition-induced steatosis in mice, but its potential role in the progression of NASH remains largely unknown.

Fluorescence imaging in the second near-infrared window (NIR-II) is crucial for accurate tumor diagnosis, offering superior resolution and penetration capabilities. Current NIR-II probes are limited by either being "always on" or responding to one stimulus, leading to low signal-to-noise ratios and potential false positives. We introduced a dual-lock-controlled probe, HN-PBA, activated by both HO and tumor acidic environment.

The purpose of this work was to re-evaluate the polar paradox theory (PPT) that explains the relationships between the efficacy of antioxidants, their polarity, and their environments. In this study, ascorbic acid (AA), ascorbyl palmitate (AP), gallic acid (GA), gallyl palmitate (GP), Trolox (TR), -tocopherol (TO), resveratrol (R), and resveratryl palmitate (RP) were employed to assess conjugated dienoic acid (CDA), the -anisidine value (-AV), headspace oxygen content, and hexanal formation in a bulk oil system. TR, TO, R, and RP showed better antioxidant activities in CDA and -AV and higher headspace oxygen content than AA, AP, GA, and GP.

The escalating prevalence of diabetes mellitus, projected to affect over 700 million by 2045, underscores the urgent need for effective management and prevention strategies, with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) constituting over 90% of these cases globally. The present meta-analysis aims to rigorously evaluate the potential of vitamin D supplementation in mitigating the onset of T2DM, amidst the backdrop of its biological plausibility yet inconclusive evidence regarding its efficacy in reducing new incidences of the disease. A comprehensive literature search up to December 2023 in MEDLINE, EMBASE and the Cochrane Library, employing a strategy focused on diabetes and vitamin D, identified randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that explore the impact of vitamin D supplementation on T2DM onset in adults with impaired glucose regulation, incorporating quality assessment via the Cochrane ROB2 tool and utilizing meta-analysis with RevMan Web to evaluate effect magnitude and heterogeneity.
