[A case of type 2N von Willebrand disease with homozygous R816W mutation of the VWF gene in a Nepalese woman].

Korean J Lab Med

August 2008

Department of Laboratory Medicine, School of Medicine, Ewha Womans University, Dongdaemun Hospital, Seoul, Korea.

Type 2N von Willebrand disease (vWD) can be confused with hemophilia A due to decreased factor VIII levels and a bleeding tendency, and differential diagnosis is of importance for providing the optimal treatment and genetic counseling. For the accurate diagnosis of type 2N vWD, von Willebrand Factor (vWF) function tests, multimer assay and gene mutation analysis are needed. The patient was a 38-yr-old Nepalese woman with a history of bleeding manifestations from childhood, such as hemarthrosis, intramuscular hematoma, and menorrhagia.

Early outcome of TKA with a medial pivot fixed-bearing prosthesis is worse than with a PFC mobile-bearing prosthesis.

Clin Orthop Relat Res

February 2009

The Joint Replacement Center of Korea, Ewha Womens University DongDaeMun Hospital, 70, ChongRo 6-Ga, ChongRo-Gu, Seoul, 110-783, Korea.

Unlabelled: Although the design features of the Medial Pivot fixed-bearing prosthesis reportedly improve kinematics compared with TKAs using fixed-bearings, clinical improvements have not been reported. We asked whether the clinical and radiographic outcomes, ranges of motion of the knee, patient satisfaction, and complication rates would be better in knees with a Medial Pivot fixed-bearing prosthesis than in those with a PFC Sigma mobile-bearing prosthesis. We compared the results of 92 patients who had a Medial Pivot fixed-bearing prosthesis implanted in one knee and a PFC Sigma mobile-bearing prosthesis implanted in the other.

Our aim in this prospective study was to compare the bone mineral density (BMD) around cementless acetabular and femoral components which were identical in geometry and had the same alumina modular femoral head, but differed in regard to the material of the acetabular liners (alumina ceramic or polyethylene) in 50 patients (100 hips) who had undergone bilateral simultaneous primary total hip replacement. Dual energy X-ray absorptiometry scans of the pelvis and proximal femur were obtained at one week, at one year, and annually thereafter during the five-year period of the study. At the final follow-up, the mean BMD had increased significantly in each group in acetabular zone I of DeLee and Charnley (20% (15% to 26%), p=0.
