Plant Methods

December 2024

Department of Molecular Genetics, Dong-A University, Saha-gu Nakdong-Daero 550 beongil 37, Busan, 49315, Republic of Korea.

Background: Genetic markers are crucial for breeding crops with desired agronomic traits, and their development can be expedited using next-generation sequencing (NGS) and bioinformatics tools. Numerous tools have been developed to design molecular markers, enhancing the convenience, accuracy, and efficiency of molecular breeding. However, these tools primarily focus on genetic variants within short user-input sequences, despite the availability of extensive omics data for genomic variants.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), the most prevalent degenerative brain disease associated with dementia, requires early diagnosis to alleviate worsening of symptoms through appropriate management and treatment. Recent studies on AD stage classification are increasingly using multimodal data. However, few studies have applied graph neural networks to multimodal data comprising F-18 florbetaben (FBB) amyloid brain positron emission tomography (PET) images and clinical indicators.

Tin (Sn)-based two-dimensional (2D) materials exhibit intriguing mechanical and optoelectrical properties owing to their non-centrosymmetric crystallinity and tunable band structures. A judicious integration of these individually decoupled properties is projected to introduce unparalleled functionalities into them, which remain largely unexplored. Herein, we develop wafer-scale tin selenide (SnSe, 0 < < 1) 2D layers composed of thermodynamically stable coexisting phases of SnSe and SnSe with distinct functionalities and identify a strong interplay between their mechanical and optoelectrical characteristics.

Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) represents a hepatic manifestation of metabolic syndrome. This study investigated the association between newly developed nomenclature MASLD and the risk of thyroid cancer in the Korean population. After excluding individuals with a history of liver disease or malignancy, we analyzed a cohort of 214,502 Korean adults aged 40 years and above who participated in the National Health Screening Program from 2009 to 2010.

Seasonal and Temporal Ensemble Models for Accurate Near-Surface Air Temperature Estimation.

Sensors (Basel)

November 2024

Department of ICT Integrated Ocean Smart Cities Engineering, Dong-A University, Busan 49315, Republic of Korea.

The near-surface air temperature (NSAT) is crucial for understanding thermal and urban environments. Traditional estimation methods using general remote sensing images often focus on the types of spatial data or machine learning models used, neglecting the importance of seasonal and temporal variations, limiting their accuracy. This study introduces a novel ensemble model that incorporates both seasonal and temporal information integrated with satellite-derived land surface temperature (LST) data to enhance NSAT estimation, along with a rigorous feature importance analysis to identify the most impactful parameters.

Cobalt (II, III) oxide (CoO) has recently gained attention as an alternative anode material to commercial graphite in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its superior safety and large theoretical capacity of about 890 mAh g. However, its practical application is limited by poor electrical conductivity and rapid capacity degradation because of significant volume increases and structural strain during repeated lithiation/delithiation cycles. To address these issues, this work presents a novel approach to synthesizing carbon-composited CoO microspheres (CoO@C), using abietic acid (AA) as a carbon source to increase conductivity and structural stability.

Pencycuron is a fungicide whose maximum residue limit (MRL) in eggplant is either set at very low levels (0.02 mg/kg in European Union) or remains unestablished in many countries, necessitating stringent pesticide management. To enable timely interventions by farmers and regulators, pre-harvest residue limits (PHRLs) propose maximum allowable pesticide concentrations for each day during the pre-harvest period.

Prognostic Impact of Multiple Synchronous T1 Breast Cancer.

Cancers (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Kangnam Sacred Heart Hospital, Hallym University College of Medicine, Seoul 07441, Republic of Korea.

: The reported incidence of multiple breast cancers varies widely, ranging from 6 to 60%, depending on the definitions used and methods of detection. With advancements in preoperative imaging techniques, such as magnetic resonance imaging, the detection of multiple breast cancers has improved. However, the clinical significance of multiple breast cancers remains controversial, with conflicting results regarding their impact on prognosis.

Purpose: Given the aggressive nature and poor prognosis of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), adjuvant capecitabine has been the standard therapy for residual disease after preoperative systemic therapy (PST). However, the optimal sequence of postoperative radiation therapy (RT) and capecitabine remains unclear. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of concurrent RT and capecitabine (RT+CAP) versus sequential RT followed by capecitabine (RT→CAP) in patients with residual TNBC after PST.
