Electronic address:

Background And Aims: Subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) dysfunction contributes to NAFLD pathogenesis and may be influenced by the gut microbiota. Whether transcript profiles of SAT are associated with liver fibrosis and are influenced by synbiotic treatment (that changes the gut microbiome) is unknown. We investigated: (a) whether the presence of clinically significant, ≥F2 liver fibrosis associated with adipose tissue (AT) dysfunction, differential gene expression in SAT, and/or a marker of tissue fibrosis (Composite collagen gene expression (CCGE)); and (b) whether synbiotic treatment modified markers of AT dysfunction and the SAT transcriptome.

COVID-19 pandemic had affected health services around the world, also reducing the diagnosis of lung cancer. On the other hand, examination of surgical specimens in patients with lung cancer and SARS-CoV-2 gave the opportunity to evidence early histologic features related to this emerging pandemic. Different prioritization of health organizations during COVID-19 pandemic resulted in a significant decline of lung cancer screening (up to 56%), delayed diagnosis (up to 30-40%) and higher advanced stage, with some exceptions (i.

The mechanism underlying visual restoration in blind animal models of retinitis pigmentosa using a liquid retina prosthesis based on semiconductive polymeric nanoparticles is still being debated. Through the application of mathematical models and specific experiments, we developed a coherent understanding of abiotic/biotic coupling, capturing the essential mechanism of photostimulation responsible for nanoparticle-induced retina activation. Our modeling is based on the solution of drift-diffusion and Poisson-Nernst-Planck models in the multi-physics neuron-cleft-nanoparticle-extracellular space domain, accounting for the electro-chemical motion of all the relevant species following photoexcitation.

Epilepsia Open

April 2024

Department of Medical and Surgical Sciences and Advanced Technologies "G.F. Ingrassia", Section of Neurosciences, University of Catania, Catania, Italy.

Article Synopsis
  • Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is a leading cause of epilepsy in rural Bolivian Chaco, with a study from 1994 showing a prevalence of 27.4% among people with epilepsy (PWE). The current study aimed to update this data after 30 years.
  • The study identified 78 PWE with Tonic-Clonic Seizures, resulting in a prevalence of 6.1 per 1,000 people. However, only 36 PWE underwent CT scans due to COVID-19, with 22% found to have NCC.
  • Results indicate that the prevalence of NCC remains unchanged over 30 years, highlighting the ongoing need for intervention programs

Metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease (MAFLD) has reached epidemic proportions worldwide and is the most frequent cause of chronic liver disease in developed countries. Within the spectrum of liver disease in MAFLD, steatohepatitis is a progressive form of liver disease and hepatocyte ballooning (HB) is a cardinal pathological feature of steatohepatitis. The accurate and reproducible diagnosis of HB is therefore critical for the early detection and treatment of steatohepatitis.

Travel surveillance uncovers dengue virus dynamics and introductions in the Caribbean.

medRxiv

November 2023

Department of Epidemiology of Microbial Diseases, Yale School of Public Health, New Haven, Connecticut, United States of America.

Dengue is the most prevalent mosquito-borne viral disease in humans, and cases are continuing to rise globally. In particular, islands in the Caribbean have experienced more frequent outbreaks, and all four dengue virus (DENV) serotypes have been reported in the region, leading to hyperendemicity and increased rates of severe disease. However, there is significant variability regarding virus surveillance and reporting between islands, making it difficult to obtain an accurate understanding of the epidemiological patterns in the Caribbean.

Article Synopsis
  • A woman with heavily treated ROS1-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) showed a clinically significant response to the drug repotrectinib for meningeal carcinomatosis, which is often seen in advanced NSCLC cases.
  • This is notable since there haven't been previous reports on repotrectinib's effectiveness for treating this condition despite its increased prevalence due to better life expectancy for patients.
  • The study found the drug at active levels in the cerebrospinal fluid, but the brief response underscores the need for new ROS1-tyrosine kinase inhibitors that can effectively cross the blood-brain barrier.
