Consumption of misidentified foraged mushrooms containing bicyclic amanitin octapeptides is a worldwide public health and veterinary problem, being considered one of the deadliest accidental human and canine food ingestion due to acute liver failure (ALF). Reversal of advanced ALF and complete clinical recovery can be achieved following definitive removal of accumulated amatoxin laden bile from the gallbladder. An accurate means of quantifying amanitin content in aspirated bile is, therefore, urgently needed.

Klippel-Trenaunay syndrome (KTS) is a rare congenital disorder defined as a triad of capillary malformation, venous malformation, and hypertrophy of soft tissue and bones, with or without lymphatic malformation. We report a case of a KTS patient with a hospital course complicated by Group A bacteremia and multiple organ failure. The 39-year-old female with KTS presented to the emergency department with a fever, tachycardia, hypotension, and profuse diarrhea for one week.

Unlabelled: The antimicrobial stewardship program (ASP) is an important quality improvement initiative that is recommended in the ICU. However, the shortage of infectious disease physicians in Japan has led to the need for simpler methods for implementing ASPs. We investigated whether antibiotic time-outs (ATOs) during multidisciplinary rounds as part of an ASP can improve patient survival and reduce the number of days of therapy (DOT) with antibiotics.

Background: Preterm infants have immature oral feeding skills, affecting length of hospital stay and long-term feeding outcomes. Swaddling has positive effects on pain and stress responses, state regulation, and physiological stability in preterm infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Swaddling during bottle feeding may support preterm infant behavioral organization and oral feeding skills.

Foreign body ingestion and aspiration can present as a life-threatening emergency in children. These foreign bodies are diagnosed based on history, physical exam, and focused radiography to reduce the risk of excessive radiation. We describe a case of a 3-year-old child who ingested magnetic beads and presented to the emergency department with no symptoms.

Inconsolable crying in infants can be caused by as simple as infantile colic to wide variety of pathologies. A thorough history, physical examination followed by laboratory and radiologic evaluation can identify the cause of inconsolable crying. We present a case of infant who presented with inconsolable crying and after extensive workup no cause could ne identified.

Health Science Clinical Professor, Pediatric Emergency Medicine, University of California Riverside, Department of Emergency Medicine, Riverside, CA.

Hyperbilirubinemia is one the most common reasons for emergency department visits for the neonate. Most cases of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia are benign. Although rare, unrecognized or untreated pathologic unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia can lead to the development of acute bilirubin encephalopathy and, ultimately, kernicterus.

Introduction Drones are unmanned aerial vehicles controlled by a person on the ground, used for recreational purposes. The purpose of the study is to describe characteristics and patterns of injuries reported in children from recreational drones. Methods We extracted data from the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System involving (NEISS) over a period of 10 years from 2010 to 2019 regarding injuries to children for ages zero up to 18 years.

Introduction Pharyngitis is one of the most common childhood diseases worldwide. We intended to compare the performance of one such rapid antigen detection test (RADT) using lateral flow immunoassay technique, between 3- to 10-year-old (children and preadolescent) and 11- to 21-year-old (adolescents). Methods Children and adolescents attending the pediatric ED with complaints of throat pain and signs of pharyngeal and tonsillar inflammation were tested by both the RADT and throat culture (TC) directed towards group A streptococcal (GAS) between April and June of 2016.

Introduction: Smartphone app-based goniometer (SG) are emerging as an alternative to Universal Goniometers (UG) in assessing joint range of motion (ROM). This study examined whether the experience level of examiner affected the reliability of assessing knee flexion (KF) and knee extension (KE) ROM using UG and SG.

Methods: Participants with osteoarthritis of the knee or following total knee replacement were recruited.

Paragangliomas are neuroendocrine tumors of the autonomic nervous system that are variably clinically functional and have a potential for metastasis. Up to 40% occur in the setting of a hereditary syndrome, most commonly due to germline mutations in succinate dehydrogenase (SDHx) genes. Immunohistochemically, paragangliomas are characteristically GATA3-positive and cytokeratin-negative, with loss of SDHB expression in most hereditary cases.

Lee, S-P, Gillis, CB, Ibarra, JJ, Oldroyd, DF, and Zane, RS. Heel-raised foot posture does not affect trunk and lower extremity biomechanics during a barbell back squat in recreational weight lifters. J Strength Cond Res 33(3): 606-614, 2019-It is claimed that weightlifting shoes with a raised heel may lead to a more upright trunk posture, and thus reduce the risk of back injuries during a barbell back squat.

Background: Sepsis severity of illness is challenging to measure using claims, which makes sepsis difficult to study using administrative data. We hypothesized that emergency department (ED) charges may be associated with hospital mortality, and could be a surrogate marker of severity of illness for research purposes. The objective of this study was to measure concordance between ED charges and mortality in admitted patients with severe sepsis or septic shock.

Objective: To determine the outcome of preterm infants whose cystic periventricular leukomalacia "disappeared" on serial screening cranial imaging studies.

Study Design: Infants ≤26 weeks of gestation born between 2002 and 2012 who had cranial imaging studies at least twice, the most abnormal study at <28 days of age and another closest to 36 weeks, were reviewed. The outcome of late death (after 36 weeks postmenstrual age) or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) in surviving infants at 18-26 months corrected age was compared between the infants with no cystic periventricular leukomalacia on both studies and cystic periventricular leukomalacia that disappeared (cystic periventricular leukomalacia at <28 days but not at 36 weeks), persisted (cystic periventricular leukomalacia on both studies), or appeared late (cystic periventricular leukomalacia only at 36 weeks).

Objective: To assess the association between prophylactic indomethacin and bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD) in a recent, large cohort of extremely preterm infants.

Study Design: Retrospective cohort study using prospectively collected data for infants with gestational ages < 29 weeks or birth weights of 401-1000 g born between 2008 and 2012 at participating hospitals of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Neonatal Research Network. Infants treated with indomethacin in the first 24 hours of life were compared with those who were not.

Background: Elevated pulmonary artery (PA) pressures in patients with heart failure are associated with a high risk for hospitalization and mortality. Recent clinical trial evidence demonstrated a direct relationship between lowering remotely monitored PA pressures and heart failure hospitalization risk reduction with a novel implantable PA pressure monitoring system (CardioMEMS HF System, St. Jude Medical).

This study aimed to explore functional deficits and perceived quality of life (QoL) among cancer survivors. Sixty-six participants completed the Post Cancer Outcome Survey developed for the purpose of this study. The results indicated (1) modest to moderate degrees of functional deficits in 28 of the 70 items measuring areas of occupation, performance skills, body functions, and psychosocial well-being within the first year after cancer treatment; (2) significantly lower perceived QoL during the first year of survivorship compared with that before diagnosis, at present, and 5 yr hereafter (p < .
