Auto-induced cognitive trance (AICT) is a modified state of consciousness derived from shamanic tradition that can be practised by individuals after specific training. The aim of this work was to characterize the phenomenological experiences of AICT, using text mining analysis. Free recalls of subjective experiences were audio-recorded in 27 participants after five pseudo-randomized experimental sessions: ordinary conscious resting state, with auditory stimulation and with an imaginary mental task, as well as during AICT with and without auditory stimulation.

Background: Convalescent plasma (CP) reduced the mortality in COVID-19 induced ARDS (C-ARDS) patients treated in the CONFIDENT trial. As patients are immunologically heterogeneous, we hypothesized that clusters may differ in their treatment responses to CP.
Methods: We measured 20 cytokines, chemokines and cell adhesion markers using a multiplex technique at the time of inclusion in the CONFIDENT trial in patients of centers having accepted to participate in this secondary study.

Increased circulating histones correlate with sepsis severity and are a potential therapeutic target. Pre-clinical studies showed benefit with a histone-neutralizing polyanion molecule (STC3141). We aimed to investigate the safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetics of STC3141 in critically ill patients with sepsis.

Coronary computed angiography (CCTA) with non-invasive fractional flow reserve (FFR) calculates lesion-specific ischemia when compared with invasive FFR and can be considered for patients with stable chest pain and intermediate-grade stenoses according to recent guidelines. The objective of this study was to compare a new CCTA-based artificial-intelligence deep-learning model for FFR prediction (FFR) to computational fluid dynamics CT-derived FFR (FFR) in patients with intermediate-grade coronary stenoses with FFR as reference standard. The FFR model was trained with curved multiplanar-reconstruction CCTA images of 500 stenotic vessels in 413 patients, using FFR measurements as the ground truth.

Background: Determinants of maternal-fetal cytomegalovirus (CMV) transmission and factors influencing the severity of congenital CMV (cCMV) infection are not well understood.
Methods: We conducted a descriptive, multicenter study in pregnant women ≥18 years old with primary CMV infection and their newborns to explore maternal immune responses to CMV and determine potential immunologic/virologic correlates of cCMV following primary infection during pregnancy. We developed alternative approaches looking into univariate/multivariate factors associated with cCMV, including a participant clustering/stratification approach and an interpretable predictive model-based approach using trained decision trees for risk prediction (post hoc analyses).

We examined more than 97,000 families from four neurodevelopmental disease cohorts and the UK Biobank to identify phenotypic and genetic patterns in parents contributing to neurodevelopmental disease risk in children. We identified within- and cross-disorder correlations between six phenotypes in parents and children, such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (R = 0.32-0.

Stroke is a major cause of death and chronic neurological disability. Despite the improvements in stroke care, the number of patients affected by stroke keeps increasing and many stroke survivors are left permanently disabled. Current therapies are limited in efficacy.

Introduction: Pituitary adenomas (PAs) are common, usually benign tumors of the anterior pituitary gland which, for the most part, have no known genetic cause. PAs are associated with major clinical effects due to hormonal dysregulation and tumoral impingement on vital brain structures. PAM encodes a multifunctional protein responsible for the essential C-terminal amidation of secreted peptides.

Transcatheter therapies for the treatment of structural heart diseases (SHD) have expanded dramatically over the last years, thanks to the developments and improvements of devices and imaging techniques, along with the increasing expertise of operators. Imaging, in particular echocardiography, is pivotal during patient selection, procedural monitoring, and follow-up. The imaging assessment of patients undergoing transcatheter interventions places demands on imagers that differ from those of the routine evaluation of patients with SHD, and there is a need for specific expertise for those working in the cath lab.

Purpose: Sepsis in critically ill patients with injury bears a high morbidity and mortality. Extensive phenotypic monitoring of leucocyte subsets in critically ill patients at ICU admission and during sepsis development is still scarce. The main objective of this study was to identify early changes in leukocyte phenotype which would correlate with later development of sepsis.

Introduction: Effective strategies are required to ensure optimal management of the crucial closure step in endoscopic pituitary surgery. Many surgical techniques have been reported but no significant consensus has been defined.
Methods: Between January 2006 and March 2022, 3015 adult patients with pituitary adenomas were operated on by a single expert neurosurgical team, using a mononostril endoscopic endonasal approach.

Background: Diabetes mellitus may increase the risk of adverse perioperative outcomes and prolong hospital stay. An enhanced recovery program (ERP) reduces surgical stress and its metabolic consequences, so attenuating the impact of preoperative risk factors. We tested the hypothesis that diabetes would have only a minor impact on outcome after colorectal surgery with an ERP.

Background: Virtual reality hypnosis (VRH) has emerged as a new and promising option for pain management. Nonetheless, neural dynamics of pain modulation during VRH have not been investigated yet. The aim of this study was to measure the effects of VRH on pain, combining neurophysiological and self-reported measurements.

Objective: The management of giant pituitary tumors is complex, with few publications and recommendations. Consequently, patient's care mainly relies on clinical experience. We report here a first large series of patients with giant pituitary tumors managed by a multidisciplinary expert team, focusing on treatments and outcome.

Purpose: To study the utility of T2-weighted MRI sequences in the identification of the inferior intercavernous sinus (IICS), a potential source of bleeding during transsphenoidal surgery of pituitary adenomas.
Methods: Pituitary sagittal T1W and coronal T2W MRI sequences were analyzed in 237 consecutive patients, after the exclusion of postoperative MRIs and those revealing an empty sella or a pituitary macroadenoma. Sphenoid sinus pneumatization was defined as incomplete (group 1) if it did not reach the nadir of the sella turcica, as complete (group 2) if it extended beyond the nadir of the sella or asymmetric (group 3), when only one side of the sinus was completely pneumatized.
