Primary intrarenal hemangioma - A series of 39 cases.

Intrarenal hemangiomas lack concise clinicopathologic information, due to the predominance of single case reports and inclusion of other vascular neoplasms and hemangiomas of perirenal, hilar, and renal vein origin. Herein, in this multi-institutional study we evaluate clinicopathologic features of 39 intrarenal hemangiomas. The median age was 62 years (range = 27-94 years; 2:1 male to female ratio), with left-sided predominance (left = 21, right = 13; one case was bilateral).

Clinical Course of Coronavirus disease 2019 C-19 in Patients with Bronchiectasis.

Objective: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has affected the whole world and caused the death of more than 6 million people. The disease has been observed to have a more severe course in patients with chronic lung diseases. There are limited data regarding COVID-19 in patients with bronchiectasis.

Effectiveness of secukinumab in radiographic and non-radiographic axial spondyloarthritis: a European routine-care observational study.

Objectives: To compare the treatment effectiveness of secukinumab in radiographic (r) versus non-radiographic (nr) axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) patients treated in routine care across Europe.

Methods: Prospectively collected data on secukinumab-treated axSpA patients with known radiographic status were pooled from nine countries.Remission rates based on patient-reported outcomes (PROs; Numeric Rating Scale (0-10), for example, pain ≤2/Bath Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Index (BASDAI) ≤2 and Ankylosing Spondylitis Disease Activity Score (ASDAS) inactive disease (ID) <1.

Isolated Maternal Hypothyroxinemia May be Associated with Insulin Requirement in Gestational Diabetes Mellitus.

An insulin regimen may be necessary for about 30% of the patients with gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). We aimed to investigate the association of free T4(fT4) levels with insulin requirement in pregnant women with GDM. We included pregnant women whose TSH levels were within the normal range and who were diagnosed with GDM, and excluded patients with thyroid dysfunction, chronic illnesses, or any previous history of antithyroid medication, levothyroxine, or antidiabetic medication use.

Pre-Discharge and Post-Discharge Management and Treatment Optimization in Acute Heart Failure.

Acute heart failure is associated with high mortality and rehospitalization rates and required urgent evaluation and early initiation or intensification of therapy. The risk of death and heart failure rehospitalization is greatest in the early post-discharge period, particularly within the first 3-6 months, and declines over time, which is referred as a vulnerable period of acute heart failure hospitalization. Therefore, implementation of guidelines-directed optimal therapy is not only so crucial in the acute phase but also very important in the pre-discharge and early post- discharge period in reducing mortality and rehospitalization rates.

Predictivity of the comorbidity indices for geriatric syndromes.

Background: The aging population and increasing chronic diseases make a tremendous burden on the health care system. The study evaluated the relationship between comorbidity indices and common geriatric syndromes.

Methods: A total of 366 patients who were hospitalized in a university geriatric inpatient service were included in the study.

Management of Hyperkalemia in Heart Failure.

Hyperkalemia is a common electrolyte abnormality in heart failure (HF) that can cause potentially life-threatening cardiac arrhythmias and sudden cardiac death. HF patients with diabetes, chronic kidney disease and older age are at higher risk of hyperkalemia. Moreover, hyperkalemia is also often associated with the use of renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system inhibitors (RAASi) including angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors, angiotensin receptor blockers, mineralocorticoid receptor antagonists and sacubitril-valsartan.

Daily inpatient ertapenem therapy can be an alternative to hospitalization for the treatment of complicated urinary tract infections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Background: Physicians hospitalize the patients with complicated urinary tract infections (cUTIs) when they need intravenous antibiotics and outpatient parenteral antimicrobial therapy (OPAT) is unavailable. Daily inpatient antimicrobial therapy is an alternative to hospitalization, which is similar to OPAT; patients go home after they are administered antibiotics in a separate room in the hospital setting.

Objectives: We assessed our previous daily inpatient practice to revitalize the model in the COVID-19 era.

Hyperkalemia in chronic heart failure with renal dysfunction or diabetes mellitus: Results from the TREAT HF study.

Objective: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and diabetes mellitus (DM) are common comorbidities in heart failure (HF). Patients with HF are at a high risk of hyperkalemia, and are therefore undertreated with respect to disease-modifying therapies. The Turkish Research Team-Heart Failure (TREAT HF) data were analyzed for the evaluation of hyperkalemia in real-life clinical practice in HF patients with CKD or DM.

Biomechanical comparison of pullout strengths of six pedicle screws with different thread designs.

Objectives: This study aims to assess the pullout strength of six different pedicle screw thread patterns.

Materials And Methods: A total of 36 sheep spines were divided into six groups including six spines in each group: fully threaded cortical (Type A), fully threaded spongeous (Type B), fully cortical threads in the proximal half and fully spongeous threads in the distal half (Type C), fully spongeous threads in the proximal half and fully cortical threads in the distal half (Type D), unthreaded proximal half with fully spongeous threads in the distal half (Type E), and unthreaded proximal half with fully cortical threads in the distal half (Type F). The axial compression-traction machine was used for biomechanical testing at a pullout rate of 1 mm/min.

Final Efficacy Results of Neratinib in HER2-positive Hormone Receptor-positive Early-stage Breast Cancer From the Phase III ExteNET Trial.

Background: The ExteNET trial demonstrated improved invasive disease-free survival (iDFS) with neratinib, an irreversible pan-HER tyrosine kinase inhibitor, versus placebo in patients with human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-positive (HER2)/hormone receptor-positive (HR) early-stage breast cancer (eBC).

Patients And Methods: ExteNET was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, phase III trial of 2840 patients with HER2 eBC after neoadjuvant/adjuvant trastuzumab-based therapy. Patients were stratified by HR status and randomly assigned 1-year oral neratinib 240 mg/day or placebo.

Distribution of Intestinal Parasites Detected between September 2011-2018 at Dokuz Eylül University Medical Faculty Hospital.

Objective: Intestinal parasitic diseases are important public health problems in our country as well as in the world. In this study, intestinal parasites were investigated in patients admitted to Dokuz Eylül University Hospital (DEUH) with various gastrointestinal system complaints.

Methods: Patients (n=18460) who were referred to the DEUH Central Parasitology Laboratory between January 2011 and December 2018, were included in the study.

Objective: Alveolar echinococcosis (AE) is one of the most lethal parasitic zoonoses in the Northern Hemisphere, and early serological detection is important to start treatment and to improve survival. A total of 50 sera samples of patients diagnosed as having various diseases were examined for by two different serological diagnostic methods.

Revision of the medicolegal assessment criteria in hypovolemic patients.

Trauma scoring systems are often used for the determination of the severity level of the lesion and the clinical status in medico-legal assessment of the trauma patient. Trauma scoring systems are used also for the determination of the life-threatening conditions. Blood loss of more than 20% was reported as the only criterion for life-threatening conditions in the acute hypovolemia.

Association between night-time surgery and occurrence of intraoperative adverse events and postoperative pulmonary complications.

Background: The aim of this post hoc analysis of a large cohort study was to evaluate the association between night-time surgery and the occurrence of intraoperative adverse events (AEs) and postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs).

Methods: LAS VEGAS (Local Assessment of Ventilatory Management During General Anesthesia for Surgery) was a prospective international 1-week study that enrolled adult patients undergoing surgical procedures with general anaesthesia and mechanical ventilation in 146 hospitals across 29 countries. Surgeries were defined as occurring during 'daytime' when induction of anaesthesia was between 8:00 AM and 7:59 PM, and as 'night-time' when induction was between 8:00 PM and 7:59 AM.

Effect of Blood Cell Subtypes Lysis on Routine Biochemical Tests.

Background: The aim of this study is to establish the contribution of blood cells subtypes on hemolysis.

Methods: Separated blood cell subtype suspensions prepared with blood from 10 volunteers were serially diluted to obtain different concentrations of cell suspensions. The cells were fully lysed and cell hemolysates were added (1:20) to aliquots of serum pool.

Relationship between social-cognitive and social-perceptual aspects of theory of mind and neurocognitive deficits, insight level and schizotypal traits in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

Objective: The primary aim of the current study was to investigate different aspects of theory of mind (ToM), including social-cognitive (ToM-reasoning) and social-perceptual (ToM-decoding) in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). We also aimed to investigate the relationship between ToM, neurocognition and a number of clinical variables including overvalued ideas, schizotypal personality traits, level of insight, and disease severity.

Method: Thirty-four patients who have been diagnosed with OCD according to DSM-IV and 30 healthy controls were included in the study.

Criteria sets for primary Sjogren's syndrome are not adequate for those presenting with extraglandular organ involvements as their dominant clinical features.

Patients with primary Sjogren's syndrome (pSS) may go undiagnosed or be misclassified due to the insidious nature and wide spectrum of the disease. The available several classification criteria emphasize glandular findings. We aimed to analyze the efficiency of various classification criteria sets in patients diagnosed on the clinical basis by expert opinion and to compare those pSS patients who fulfilled these criteria with those who did not.

Blinatumomab versus Chemotherapy for Advanced Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.

Background: Blinatumomab, a bispecific monoclonal antibody construct that enables CD3-positive T cells to recognize and eliminate CD19-positive acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) blasts, was approved for use in patients with relapsed or refractory B-cell precursor ALL on the basis of single-group trials that showed efficacy and manageable toxic effects.

Methods: In this multi-institutional phase 3 trial, we randomly assigned adults with heavily pretreated B-cell precursor ALL, in a 2:1 ratio, to receive either blinatumomab or standard-of-care chemotherapy. The primary end point was overall survival.

Effects of Acetylcholinesterase Inhibitors on Nutritional Status in Elderly Patients with Dementia: A 6-month Follow-up Study.

Objectives: Nutritional status is one of the factors that affects disease progression, morbidity and mortality in elderly patients with dementia. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of acetylcholinesterase inhibitor (AchEI) therapy on nutritional status and food intake in the elderly.

Design, Setting And Participants: Newly diagnosed patients with dementia, who underwent comprehensive geriatric assessment (CGA) and were followed at regular intervals, were retrospectively evaluated.
