Background: The present study examined the effectiveness of high-purity macro/microporous beta-tricalcium phosphate (HPMM β-TCP) as a bone grafting material for maxillary sinus floor elevation by morphometric, histopathological, and histomorphometric evaluations.
Methods: Ten unilateral maxillary sinus floor elevation procedures using 100% HPMM β-TCP were performed in 10 patients. Morphometric evaluation was carried out by computed tomography (CT) imaging immediately after augmentation and prior to dental implant placement 7 months later.

Oxytocin (OT) has been demonstrated to be involved in various social behaviors in mammals. However, OT gene knockout (OTKO) mice can conceive and deliver successfully, though females cannot rear their pups because of lack of lactation. Here, we investigated the sociosexual behavior of both sexes in two experimental setups: olfactory preference for sexual partner's odor and direct social interaction in an enriched condition.

Background: Gadoxetic acid-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has an important role in preoperative evaluation of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). However, no studies have prospectively performed intraindividual comparison of gadoxetic acid-enhanced 3T MRI and multidetector-row computed tomography (MDCT) with histopathological examination for the detection of HCCs. We prospectively compared the efficacies of gadoxetic acid-enhanced MRI and multiphasic contrast-enhanced MDCT with that of histopathological examination, used as a reference standard, for the detection of HCC in surgical candidates.

The primary objective of this study was to investigate the tolerability, efficacy and pharmacokinetic profile of gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) in patients with relapsed and/or refractory CD33-positive acute myeloid leukemia (AML). Patients received 2-h infusions of GO twice with an interval of approximately 14 days. Tolerability was assessed using the National Cancer Institute Common Toxicity Criteria Version 2.

A task force of the Japanese Breast Cancer Society has proposed a recommendation for adequate evaluation of hormone receptors in routine practice, in order to standardize handling of tissues, staining techniques and scoring systems. As a part of the study, several examinations were conducted to detect the effect of technical problems, including the influence of fixation time and other fixation and processing conditions, on the immunoreactivity for ERalpha. There is little influence of prolonged fixation on the immunoreactivity for ERalpha, except for cases in which particularly over-fixed blocks are used.

Innate and adaptive immunities are the two major arms of the immune system, which rely on distinct cell types. These cells can be distinguished not only by the source of diversity for non-self recognition, of germline or somatic origin, but also by their localization and the pattern and rates of response after encounter of antigenic triggers. In addition, subsets of lymphocytes exist whose receptors require rearrangement but result in semi-invariant structures with a high degree of self-specificity.

A 63-year-old woman who had received hemodialysis therapy since she fell acute on chronic renal failure 4 years ago presented with multiple joint pain. Nephrocalcinosis was not detected by abdominal X-ray when hemodialysis therapy was initiated. Laboratory testing showed azotemia, anemia, hypoproteinemia and mild liver dysfunction but no liver cirrhosis.

Antibody to group A streptococcal polysaccharide (ASP) is the only antibody of cellular components which is now detectable in clinical practice. Streptococcal polysaccharide is known to have cross-immunity with the glycoprotein of human heart tissue, and has been discussed as a pathogenesis of rheumatic carditis and valvular heart disease. In this study, ASP titer was determined by passive hemagglutination technique in patients with rheumatic fever and rheumatic heart disease.
