Purpose: Few studies have assessed trochanteric vascularity despite its implications for bone healing and surgical approaches. This study aimed to assess the regional arterial contributions of the medial femoral circumflex artery (MFCA) versus the lateral femoral circumflex artery (LFCA) to trochanteric vascularity.

Methods: Ten adult human cadaveric pelvises to mid-femur specimens were obtained.

Recent studies have shown that polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) can be found in commercial black tattoo inks raising suspicion of tattoo-related PAHs exposure to cancer risk. We present a case of a 27-year-old Hispanic nonsmoker male with bladder cancer (BC) following extensive tattoo sessions totaling over 100 hours. The patient was treated with transurethral resection of the bladder tumor (TURBT) and adjuvant intravesical Bacillus Calmette-Guerin (BCG) therapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers are commonly used for tattoo removal due to their ability to target ink particles accurately, but multiple sessions are often needed based on factors like tattoo size and pigment depth.
  • While higher energy settings can reduce the number of sessions, they may cause complications like problematic wound healing.
  • A case report illustrates how using potent topical steroids in a controlled manner can improve wound healing after high-energy laser treatments, enabling successful tattoo removal while ensuring patient satisfaction.

Unconscious bias, also known as implicit bias, is the principal contributor to the perpetuation of discrimination and is a robust determinant of people's decision-making. Unconscious bias occurs despite conscious nonprejudiced intentions and interferes with the actions of the reflective and conscious side. Education and self-awareness about implicit bias and its potentially harmful effects on judgment and behavior may lead individuals to pursue corrective action and follow implicit bias mitigation communication strategies.

(1) Background: COVID-19 infection has affected almost 6 million people worldwide. Geniculate Ganglion Zoster resulting in Ramsay Hunt Syndrome (RHS) has been rarely described in this context. (2) Methods: Here, a case of RHS in the context of asymptomatic COVID-19 infection is reported followed by a literature review of the previously published cases (PubMed research combining "COVID-19" and "Ramsay Hunt Syndrome" or their abbreviations/synonyms, searching for data published at any time till October 2023).

Aim: The purpose of this prospective ultrasound study was to document dorso-palmar (vertical) displacement of the median nerve in relation to the superficial flexor tendons at the level of the carpal tunnel. Furthermore, the gliding patterns of the median nerve were characterized. The presence of vertical gliding was intended to serve as an additional bio-kinematic parameter of median nerve movement, and will be referred to as a 'level change'.

Background: A serious concern with surgical procedures around the hip joint is iatrogenic injury of the arterial supply to the femoral head (FH) and consequent development of FH osteonecrosis. Cam-type morphology can extend to the posterosuperior area. Understanding the limit of the posterior superior extension of the femoral osteochondroplasty is paramount to avoid underresection and residual impingement while maintaining FH vascularity.

Obesity is a global public health concern associated with increased risk of several comorbidities. Due to the limited effectiveness of current therapies, new treatment strategies are needed. Our aim was to examine the effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (AD-MSCs) on obesity and its associated diseases in a diet-induced obese (DIO) animal model.

COVID-19: Test, Test and Test.

Med Sci (Basel)

December 2020

Department of Molecular Diagnostics, Doctors' Center Laboratories, Beirut 115020, Lebanon.

A new virus was identified in late December 2019 when China reported the first cases of pneumonia in Wuhan, and a global COVID-19 pandemic followed. The world was not late to respond, with a number of sweeping measures ranging from social distancing protocols, stringent hygienic practices, and nation-wide lockdowns, as well as COVID-19 testing campaigns in an attempt to prevent the transmission of the disease and contain the pandemic. Currently, different types of diagnostic testing have been adopted globally, such as nucleic acid detection tests, immunological tests and imaging approaches; however, real-time reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) remains the "gold standard" for detection of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2).

Introduction: While laser technology has expanded the armamentarium of treatment for various skin diseases during the past years, heterogeneity in study outcomes hampers comparability and appropriate evidence synthesis. Part of these issues can be addressed by developing a generic outcome set. Using the Delphi method, this study aims to seek consensus between key stakeholders on relevant generic outcomes ( to measure) for implementation in the international registry on Laser trEAtments in Dermatology (LEAD).

A systematic review of outcome reporting in laser treatments for dermatological diseases.

J Eur Acad Dermatol Venereol

January 2020

Department of Dermatology, Amsterdam UMC, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

The standardization of outcome reporting is crucial for interpretation and comparison of studies related to laser treatment of skin disorders. In collaboration with the Cochrane Skin-Core Outcome Set Initiative (CS-COUSIN), a procedure has been proposed to find consensus on the most important generic outcome domains (what to measure) for implementation in the international Laser TrEAtment in Dermatology (LEAD) registry. As the first step in the development of a generic outcome set for the LEAD registry, we undertook a systematic review to identify outcomes, outcome measurement instruments, methods and definitions reported in recently published literature of laser treatments for skin disorders.

Introduction: This study compared the efficacy and safety of similar U-100 insulin glargine products, namely, Lilly insulin glargine (LY IGlar; Basaglar) and the reference insulin glargine product (IGlar; Lantus), used once daily in combination with oral antihyperglycemic medications (OAMs) in adults with type 2 diabetes (T2D).

Methods: ELEMENT 5 was a phase III, randomized, multinational, open-label, treat-to-target, 24-week trial. Participants were insulin naïve (glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c] ≥ 7.

Recognizing and acting early on airway compromise reduces morbidity and mortality in patients with airway obstruction. Causes include foreign bodies, toxic/hot fumes, difficult intubation, laryngeal spasm, and tumors. Before definitive control of the airway is possible, provide 100% oxygen with a tightly fitting mask to optimize body oxygen stores.

Background: The increased number of cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures has led to a greater demand to achieve aesthetically acceptable scars. Silicone gel (SG) dressings were evaluated in these cases following the principles of wound care and also minimizing abnormal scar formation.

Patients And Methods: A newly developed solution in wound care in the form of a SG has proven to be a highly effective treatment for a series of 4 clinically challenging cases presented in this article: postprocedure healing after a laser treatment, nonhealing scalp wounds, chronic relapsing xerotic eczematous cheilitis, and the treatment of scars caused by third degree burns.

Background And Objective: Many different lasers, polychromatic high-intensity light sources (PCLs), and RF devices have claimed clinical efficacy in rejuvenating the skin. In this study, the sequential combination of two different laser wavelengths was evaluated to produce reliably significant clinical improvements optimizing treatment parameters.

Methods: The left volar aspects of the forearms of four volunteers were treated with nine different parameter settings using a variable pulsewidth fractional Er:YAG 2940-nm laser with and without air cooling.
