The oral microbiota, second in abundance to the gut, is implicated in chronic systemic diseases, but its specific role in GVHD pathogenesis has been unclear. Our study finds that mucositis-induced oral dysbiosis in patients post-hematopoietic cell transplantation associated with increased chronic GVHD (cGVHD) even in patients receiving post-transplant cyclophosphamide. In murine HCT models, oral dysbiosis caused by bilateral molar ligatures exacerbated cGVHD and increased bacterial load in the oral cavity and gut with Enterococcaceae significantly increasing in both organs.

Article Synopsis
  • Some forms of Sjögren's syndrome (SS) cause systemic symptoms due to lymphocyte infiltration in various organs, which the study seeks to understand better using minor salivary gland tissues.
  • The research involved a retrospective analysis of labial gland biopsies from female patients over 60 years old, combining clinical data with molecular techniques for gene expression and tissue imaging.
  • Results revealed that secondary SS showed more severe epithelial damage and lymphocyte activity compared to primary SS, indicating that analyzing these FFPE samples can reveal significant histological differences between the two types of SS.

Background: Perioperative oral management contributes to the prevention of dental/systemic complications. However, a professional dental checkup before surgery is generally not performed and relies on the patient's answer to a simple question by medical professionals other than dentists: "Do you have any concerns regarding your mouth related to undergoing surgery?" Here, we evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of this question for predicting perioperative oral health problems in patients with primary esophageal and primary lung cancer.

Methods: We performed an oral cavity check in all patients before scheduled surgery for primary esophageal and lung cancer.

The aim of this study was to compare the estimated public medical care cost of measures to address metallic dental restorations (MDRs) for head and neck radiotherapy using high-energy mega-voltage X-rays. This was considered a first step to clarify which MDR measure was more cost-effective. We estimated the medical care cost of radiotherapy for two representative MDR measures: (i) with MDR removal or (ii) without MDR removal (non-MDR removal) using magnetic resonance imaging and a spacer.
