Background: The molecular mechanisms underlying Fontan associated liver disease (FALD) remain largely unknown. We aimed to assess intrahepatic transcriptomic differences among patients with FALD according to the degree of liver fibrosis and clinical outcomes.
Methods: This retrospective cohort study included adults with the Fontan circulation at the Ahmanson/UCLA Adult Congenital Heart Disease Center.

Background Determine the prevalence and predictors associated with underdiagnosis and undertreatment of modifiable cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance/diabetes) among adult survivors of childhood cancer at high risk of premature CVD. Methods and Results This was a cross-sectional study of adult-aged survivors of childhood cancer treated with anthracyclines or chest radiotherapy, recruited across 9 US metropolitan regions. Survivors completed questionnaires and in-home clinical assessments.

The intersection of these disparities within the multidisciplinary field of cardio-oncology is in critical need of examination, given the risk of perpetuating health inequities in the growing vulnerable population of patients with cancer and cardiovascular disease. This review identifies 13 cohort studies and 2 meta-analyses investigating disparate outcomes in treatment-associated cardiotoxicity and situates these data within the context of oncologic disparities, preexisting cardiovascular disparities, and potential system-level inequities.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the association between insurance status and emergent versus nonemergent encounters among adults with CHD ≥18 years old. Methods and Results We used California Office of Statewide Health Planning and Development Database from January 2005 to December 2015 to determine the trends of insurance status and encounters and the association of insurance status on encounter type among adults with CHD.

Background Ultra-high-density mapping enables detailed mechanistic analysis of atrial reentrant tachycardia but has yet to be used to assess circuit conduction velocity (CV) patterns in adults with congenital heart disease. Methods and Results Circuit pathways and central isthmus CVs were calculated from consecutive ultra-high-density isochronal maps at 2 tertiary centers over a 3-year period. Circuits using anatomic versus surgical obstacles were considered separately and pathway length <50th percentile identified small circuits.

We compared emergency medical services responses to out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) and ST-segment‒elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) during the 2020 COVID-19 pandemic to 2018 to 2019 and evaluated the impact of California's March 19, 2020 stay-at-home order. Methods and Results We conducted a population-based cross-sectional study using Los Angeles County emergency medical services registry data for adult patients with paramedic provider impression (PI) of OHCA or STEMI from February through May in 2018 to 2020.

Little is known about the differences between those who access care at an ACHD center and those who do not access ACHD-specific care. Methods and Results The Oregon All Payer All Claims database was queried to identify subjects aged 18 to 65 years with an () code consistent with ACHD from 2010 to 2015.

Background Effective orifice area (EOA) ≥0.2 cm or regurgitant volume (Rvol) ≥30 mL predicts prognostic significance in functional mitral regurgitation (FMR). Both volumetric and proximal isovelocity surface area (PISA) methods enable calculation of these metrics.

Our study seeks to characterize the current Women in Cardiology Twitter network. Methods and Results Six women-specific cardiology Twitter hashtags were analyzed: #ACCWIC (American College of Cardiology Women in Cardiology), #AHAWIC (American Heart Association Women in Cardiology), #ilooklikeacardiologist, #SCAIWIN (Society for Cardiovascular Angiography and Interventions Women in Innovations), #WomeninCardiology, and #WomeninEP (Women in Electrophysiology).

Background Cardiovascular safety is an important consideration regarding the benefits versus risks of electronic cigarette use (EC) for public health. The single-use cardiovascular effects of EC have been well studied but may not reflect effects of ad libitum use throughout the day. We aimed to compare the circadian hemodynamic effects as well as 24-hour biomarkers of oxidative stress, and platelet aggregation and inflammation, with ad libitum cigarette smoking (CS) versus EC versus no tobacco product use.

Proteins regulate biological processes and inform the risk of diseases. Thus, in 938 patients with stable coronary heart disease from the Heart and Soul cohort, we quantified 1054 plasma proteins using modified aptamers (SOMAscan) to: (1) discern how reduced glomerular filtration influences the circulating proteome, (2) learn of the importance of kidney function to the prognostic information contained in recently identified protein cardiovascular risk biomarkers, and (3) identify novel and even unique cardiovascular risk biomarkers among individuals with CKD.

Background As patients with congenital heart disease (CHD) are living longer, understanding the comorbidities they develop as they age is increasingly important. However, there are no published population-based estimates of the comorbidity burden among the US adult patients with CHD. Methods and Results Using the IBM MarketScan commercial claims database from 2010 to 2016, we identified adults aged ≥18 years with CHD and 2 full years of continuous enrollment.

Background Heart failure (HF) admissions in adults with congenital heart disease (CHD) are becoming more common. We compared in-hospital and readmission events among adults with and without CHD admitted for HF. Methods and Results We identified all admissions with the primary diagnosis of HF among adults in the California State Inpatient Database between January 1, 2005 and January 1, 2012.

Mounting evidence has demonstrated improved survival with the incorporation of dedicated CICU providers with expertise in critical care medicine ( CCM ). This is the first study to systematically survey dual certified physicians in order to assess the relevance of CCM training to contemporary CICU care.
